Re: Are you an Introvert/Anti-Social person ?
I'm a meditation man myself and whenever I hear someone wax poetic about their psychadelic experiences it always seems like one step forward, two steps back. Okay, the shrooms broke through the ego foisted on you by society. That's good. But you've only replaced it with an ego based on considering yourself on a higher plane than straightedge folks due to your shroom consumption, dismiss whole swaths of people based on stereotypes without opening your eyes to the fact that just a little bit of digging will reveal hidden depths to a person beyond their costume, and you've turned into a recluse by choice. This is an improvement?Satan wrote:The golden rule for me is "If it doesn't matter on shrooms, it doesn't matter."
Frankly it reminds me of those damn rich kids who figure out that consumerism is a fool's game, but instead of using this newfound spiritual freedom and their privileged position in life to enact real improvement on the world, they instead become homeless by choice and spend their days panhandling and dumpster diving. "Turn on, tune in, drop out" indeed.
Are you sure the shrooms didn't just turn you into an asshole?

This is gold and accurately describes what I've experienced in these kinds of circles.Mischief Maker wrote:
Not much to chime in to the thread except that I'm a social person. Which I guess has to do mostly with wanting stimulation and chaotic factors to come into play in most aspects of my life. I'm social because I have more fun that way, even though I'm perfectly fine with spending a lot of time alone.
It fits well into one of my favourite hobbies, which is travelling, since being social creates the possibility of experiencing stuff you never could've imagined or anticipated.

I don't care if people choose to do psychedelics, but the types who go on about "ego-death" and how much more enlightened they are than everyone else are the worst kinds of drug users.
On topic, yes I am. I do have a social life but it's entirely on the internet right now if that even counts; I've had irl friends before but we've just drifted apart by this point. I wouldn't really say my lack of a social life is by choice and I do feel lonely pretty often, but I am naturally shy and very selective about the kinds of people I enjoy being with.

Sure! I do Zen meditation. There are two types. Meditation on a single point, and meditation on the void (thoughtlessness).Stevens wrote:Do you have a preferred way? I'm not that experienced with it. Meditation on a single point just means picking out one single thing to put all your attention on, like the rhythm of your natural breathing, or staring at a knicknack, or whatever. I wouldn't advise trying to do more than 5-minutes at a go, once or twice a day.
It helps at first to write down every idea in your head, then set a timer and agree with yourself that all these things can wait for five minutes. During the practice, expect that only maybe 10 seconds out of the five minutes will be in actual meditation, the rest will be a rush of random thoughts and ideas. Don't allow yourself to be frustrated by these distractions, consider them mile markers on your journey. The more you practice, the fewer distracting thoughts will intrude and the larger proportion of the five minutes will actually be in a meditative state.
Don't come in expecting an experience as powerful as psychadelics, I imagine this will be like trying to appreciate the natural sweetness of oatmeal after eating a bowl of cinnamon toast crunch cereal. Above all relax. The experiences will come when they're ready to come and they cannot be rushed or forced.
I would not recommend doing Tai Chi as it's practiced today. It's a martial art that has become debased and put to a purpose it was never meant for. 99% of Tai Chi instructors are completely unqualified, but in their weak defense they probably don't know because they themselves learned from unqualified instructors. If you want a Chinese energy art for health and freshness of mind, 5 minutes of Lifting the Sky is faster, easier, and safer for beginners.

No, but I was a wannabe asshole and had surrounded myself with borderline psychotic assholes who were responsible for break-ins and robberies on a weekly basis, I was essentially the nerd in a group of bullies. I come from one of the very few middle class areas where I live. I lived in a weird place where these people were viewed as 'cool' because they are the majority and I felt 'cool' by association, it was the shrooms that forced me to face what I was supressing - that I just did fit with these people - it's a lot more complicated than that and I can't be bothered going into it, so I cut these people out of my life 20 years ago, I moved on and now I'm a lot more confident and selective about who I bother spending time with.Mischief Maker wrote:Are you sure the shrooms didn't just turn you into an asshole?Satan wrote:The golden rule for me is "If it doesn't matter on shrooms, it doesn't matter."
I guess if you experienced where I lived and the people there you'd 'get it' - they're particularly vicious, very irrational, very nihilistic and have a culture where pursuing anything that doesn't involve soccer, beer, fighting and robbing people means you're a 'faggot' and therefore a target.

You'd think that wouldn't you, but have you tried living in the real world? Well done, take a look around, these people are fucking crazies, they can't think/reason for shit and maybe a little help could solve this problem and what I actually meant is that you get posing, vacuous cunts who disappear up their own ass to the point where they make fools of themselves. Of all the women I have attracted - not one stinker, and yet I don't sell tickets to my show.Cagar wrote:I'm extremely social.

These things are obvious to anyone with some thought, although for the latter that's how I'd define 'good looking' despite knowing that it's subjectiveEgo: I have a degree. This means I'm intelligent.
Reality : I have a degree because I can accurately repeat what someone else told me under exam conditions. The education system doesn't actually select for intelligence, it selects for obedience and in most cases stupidity. It's merely training for your role as a slave.
Ego: I'm good looking because good looking women find me attractive.
Reality : This is entirely subjective.

The ego never dies, shrooms somehow allow you to park it temporarily and examine it, free of it. Leary was the last to do any serious research on it and he was imprisoned for it. Now we have MAPS using that research to treat PTSD and many other mental issues.

There are places and people like that, yeah. I try to avoid them.
You don't have to do shrooms, meditate, or do anything to not be an asshole. What you need to do to not be an asshole is naturally different for each person.

Where I live there are two different types of men - borderline psychotics/actual psychotics and grown men who smell and play Pokémon, since I'm neither of those, I have some difficulty fitting in, so I learned to accept that reality and deal with it a little better.

I believe you.
Like I said, I've had experience with some truly bad, vicious crowds, and I know they're out there. But they're not everywhere, thankfully.
But I'm just saying, it depends from person to person and place to place. There are nice neighborhoods, and neighborhoods full of violent punks. There are parents who raise you to be egotistical, and those who raise you to be humble. Some people are kind by nature, some people have to learn it. There aren't a ton of absolutes IMO.

Cagar needs shrooms to help with posting like a wanker who'd probably have a panic attack if we met in person.
Stop posting like a wanker, you stupid wanker.
Some people get swept up with their lives and maybe lack a bit of grounding as a result, and shrooms help with this process. That's simply all I meant and I'm sure Stevens is the same when he said that he felt he wasn't being as respectful to his mother as maybe he felt he should, and when I read your 'I don't need a waa waa I'm an Internet super wang' post, I think you could maybe do with a grounding yourself, asshole.
Ask some conceited douche with a 2:1 vanity degree if they think this means they're intelligent - I'd put money on the answer being yes despite their response being a complete failure to reason.

Should have clarified - I work in a school with a population of 70% chinese:D I put on a CD and we go through motions like dragon eats the pearl, and waking up your energy, things like that. Some of it I'm sure I'm doing wrong, but for me and the kids it is more about the breathing and relaxation. And they seem to enjoy it because it is different.Mischief Maker wrote:

At the time I just seemed to have a super short fuse with her. And the trip made me realize this and that maybe I shouldn't do that shit anymore since she is 75. She is in pretty good health overall, but I know she won't be here forever.Satan wrote:

Mushrooms (don't consider them drugs by the way, if it is found in nature it isn't a drug) tend to bring the user what they need. That is what I needed at the time and I'm better for it. That isn't the only thing it brought me, it was just the only thing I mentioned.
Again, this is something that is done biennially. It isn't something you can do frequently.

Re: Are you an Introvert/Anti-Social person ?
(I realize the irony of talking about chi in a thread where I already pooh-pooed psychadelics, yes.)Stevens wrote:Should have clarified - I work in a school with a population of 70% chinese:D I put on a CD and we go through motions like dragon eats the pearl, and waking up your energy, things like that. Assuming that just because someone is Chinese means they're an expert on chi kung is like assuming that just because someone is American means they're a nuclear physicist.
The term "chi kung" is roughly analogous to the word "exercise." It refers to a wide variety of techniques for improving your health at the energy level. Just as different types of physical exercise serve different purpose, different types of chi kung are appropriate in different situations. And just as certain forms of physical exercise can be completely inappropriate depending on your lifestyle, same with chi kung.
When I talk about chi, I don't mean Street Fighter Hadouken fireball chi, or "the force," I mean acupuncture chi. Tai Chi is meant for combat, so the Chi Kung incorporated into the practice builds a powerful flow to support physically demanding sparring. If you energize your body way above normal with Tai Chi, but then just sit at a desk for hours reading a book, bad things happen. I speak from experience.
There are two outcomes to deviated Tai Chi practice:
The preferable one is that none of you have an aptitude for chi kung and build no more of a flow than you'd get from ballroom dancing. In that case, I'd say you'd still be better off learning ballroom dancing because the health benefits would be identical, it's easier on the knees, and you'd actually learn a skill with some use in the real world.
The worse case is that some of the people in your class DO have an aptitude for chi and will accidentally overtrain. Like I said, Tai Chi generates a powerful flow, especially the three circle stance. Unlike physical exercise, chi kung is not exhausting, it's invigorating, so you can easily take it too far. Overtraining for the first couple days feels really great, but a nasty hangover is coming. The symptoms include insomnia, nausea, and jitteriness. I've experienced it once and it is NOT pleasant. If you or any of your classmates start to experience these symptoms, cut off the training and do some outdoor physical activities for a few days while the hangover runs its course.
Lifting the Sky is much safer and more beginner-friendly than Tai Chi while demanding far less of your time. Just 10 reps followed by a couple minutes of experiencing the flow moving through your body, morning and evening, can have surprisingly profound improvements on your mind and body after just a couple months training. Just remember to exhale through your mouth.

According to your results you appear to be the type of person who enjoys socializing with both large and smaller, more intimate groups of people. You don't mind being around big crowds, but that doesn't mean you'll want to crash every party you're invited to. Having an active social life and extending your network of friends is relatively important to you, but it isn't the most crucial thing. You've managed to strike a great balance between actively involving yourself in your larger social network, and spending some quality time with a few intimate friends. Although you may not always be the conversation-starter or the "life of the party", you are generally a very outgoing individual, whether among friends or people you are less familiar with.
