Sony PVM 2130QM dead? :(

Post by shintoshio »

Hey there everybody,

I've owned my Sony PVM 2130QM for a while now, I got it from an auction, it was working perfectly and I was really happy having one. I figured it'd be nice to have a remote you know? So I ordered a replacement remote (never gotten one with it) -- it's some sort of generic Bravia remote. It used to work for basic stuff, volume up/down, on and off etc.

I stopped using it since I liked the buttons so much (they light up when you press the control button). So I haven't used it at all, until last night I thought: "I guess that remote would be easier, I wouldn't have to get up all the time". I turn the monitor off with my replacement remote and the next thing that happens, my monitor doesn't go to standby mode like it used to with that remote. It turned itself off and I haven't been able to turn it on ever again.

I've tried holding down buttons, unplugging it and pressing the power button multiple times to discharge and try again. All without luck. I had my Xbox and PS2 hooked up with it, along with my Dreamcast. Really bummed now. I've been searching for weeks but I just cannot find another PVM in my area.

Would buying the official remote help? I'm out of ideas. And I was planning on opening it up so I could adjust the image through the pots. I feel like a little kid who's ice cream just got slammed onto the ground. It's really frustrating to say the least.

Sounds like a coincidence... It's highly probable there might be a couple of coding differences on the remotes, but nothing significant so long as you could adjust all that you want to and certainly no 'kill switch'.

It's possible that there's something of standby mode but unplugging from power supply, leaving 10 mins should typically negate that... Though offhand no experience of that on a crt... Check service manual you never know...

I take it there was no pop/bang or odour that you noticed? Probably a capacitor dying or flyback giving out? If so something died and needs to be replaced... hopefully just capacitor. You can always inspect inside for visual damage or faults.

Beyond that start with basic- power.

The fuse.... So many times its just a fuse so easily overlooked :) Change the fuse in your plug if so.

If that's good the least you should be able to get is power to the thing. If no lights/signs of life you should probably inspect the 'on' switch... It's possible some relay has failed - find where the switch connects to and see if there's an obvious connection that it bridges. Connect these two with a soldered wire and you can probably bypass that.

If still no joy you'd just have to get a multimeter and try and figure out what's happening with the power.

Thanks for the suggestion! I wrote down everything you said, and no I'm lucky the PVM wasn't/isn't giving any weird smell so I hope I'm still good. I love this thing to death.
