Clean NESRGB installs

Post by vvs »

After performing dozens of NESRGB mod installs on AV Famicom systems, I really got tired of the step where you wire it to the multi-out. I always strive to make it look perfect, but I was never really satisfied with soldering ribbon cable to the multi-out through-hole pins that stick out underneath the PCB Famicom motherboard. It just didn't look clean in my opinion.

And every time I performed the mod, I dreaded the whole routine of measuring and stripping wire, crimping dupont connectors, heat shrink tubing the wire and neatly routing it to the underside of the AV Famicom, and just wrestling with the wires so that the console cover would line up _just_ right without pinching the cable with the RF shield before closing up the console.

I'm sure other modders around here know exactly what I'm talking about, and for me, it was the most time consuming part of the mod.

Anway, I created some PCB's to ease the process. Here is the result:

The PCB that connects to the multi-out is nice and thin, 0.6mm so the through holes really stick out. The PCB that connects to the NESRGB is just regular 1.6mm. Both are connected via FPC

I have a few PCBs and parts left over if people are interested. Although I should warn you, it's not for the faint of heart. The FPC connector is 0.5mm pitch.

i think toploaders always come out nicer than frontloaders because of the whole board flip thing in the frontloader i have to leave the wires longer to flip the board right side up to work on it.

with that said, this kit you made makes nesrgb toploader installations even neater than they already are.

like it.

I sold the last of the kits a while back. If I get more made, I will follow up on this thread. Although, I'm not sure what the demand would be as I imagine people would be leaning more towards the NES HDMI kit nowadays.
