Turbo Duo - CD drive - repair/replacement?

Post by Venom »

This happened a while ago, the drive won't spin the disc, it just kind of died one day (black US model). Is there a place I can pick up a replacement drive or get it repaired?

I am sending my TGCD players there, but they said the success rate is VERY low. Either way, you won't lose anything by trying.

EDIT: How can you be in Canadia and not know? Shame on you! :P

Last summer i bought a minty Duo-R (but it's the same) with box, manuals and all the shit; the laser pickup was broken...

http://www.teamfremont.com/features/Tur ... pair.shtml

Reading this tutorial, repaired my Duo in 10 minutes. Buy an HOPM3 Laser Unit and have fun! ;)

It's the seller where i bought mine! :)

Now, i have a Minty Duo-R, fully boxed, with a brand new laser pickup!

Oh, and remember: imho repairing a laser pickup is useless, because it's a temporaney solution; when is possible, the best way is replacing the laser pickup, or buy a new system, in very good conditions... :)

Excuse my poor engRish!

Thanks a lot for the instructions, looks like that would be easy to do and work.

Not sure I understand your last comment though. You say it's a temporary solution and useless, and follow that by saying it is the best option other than buying a new system. What do you mean?

No, he says that repairing is temporary and replacing is preferrable.

Btw, the work is very easy, and the percentage of success is 100%! After my Duo, repaired other two machines, with the same result! :)

What was the temporary "repair" option? Maybe I should ask oldschoolgamer (Omnedon, I think) sometime...

Working on the laser trimmer, placed on the laser pickup; but the percentage of success is very low: i've tried to fix the old laser unit (on my Duo and an other), before the swap, but without good results...

Btw, if you want to try:

You can rotate A LITTLE the white trimmer near the connectors: a little on the left, and try to load the disc; a little to the right, and try to load the disc; etc.... :)

But, i repeat, it's difficult that the laser will works again... :)

Sorry to bump this thread. They did not try to fix my US turbo Grafx CD unit, I wonder if the Lazor and motor are that different... hmmm...

Anyway, mods, wouldn't it be a good idea to sticky this thread? The link on where to get the lazor assembly can come in handy in the future.

The mods would be wise to stick this thread, indeed for those Duos are not in tip-top shape, laser lense-wise...

My Turbo Duo's CD-Rom laser hasn't bit the dust yet -- even though I brought it brand new back in November of 1994. It came with a four year extended warranty that expired in November of 1998... ^_~

It still keeps on ticking like a fine watch...

Bumping my own thread from years back. I see that OSG no longer lists Duo repair on their site, but I have contacted them. Are there any other options for getting the CD drive repaired/replaced these days?

Try PC Engine FX forum. There are a bunch of experienced and cheap modders who hang out there.

Figured I'd bump this as I'm now having drive issues with my PCE DUO as well. Drive is reading discs intermittently, and after a while stops reading them all together, making me think the lens needs to be replaced. I'm going to check the PCE FX forums but am more interesting in sourcing the parts and doing the swap myself, it looks like the link posted many years back in this thread is now broken.

**Edit: After doing some more research, it looks like eBay is your best bet now for the part. Just plug a "Hop m3" into the search bar and a lot of results should pop up. I picked up this one, http://www.ebay.com/itm/HOP-M3-Original ... KAm_6XbM7g. It seems many of the old links for parts sourcing in past tutorials (even the one on the PC FX forums) are dead.

It bears mentioning that if you have not had the capacitors in your Duo replaced do that first, might be the source of the issue and it has to be done in any regard.

Yep, I have had all the caps replaced. :)

I agree, if anyone has DUO issues, that should be the first thing on the to-do list.
