Some questions about XBOX360/One shmupping
Some questions about XBOX360/One shmupping
I have some queries about XBOX shmups. As am thinking about purchasing a Japanese console. Seeing as Raiden V is out on XboxOne it would make sense to get one of those. I have already bought the Cave shooting collection for X360.
But I have some questions:
Which XBOX360 shmups are compatible with XBOXOne? All, many or not many??
Are the US (or Europe if available) x360 Raiden Fighters Aces and Raiden IV region free?
Any there any other shooters available or planned for Xbox one?
I used to own a Jap X360 years ago and had most of the shmups, including the Raiden games. I think Ketsui was the latest I had. Then I had to sell it. And now Raidens are very pricey indeed!

Re: Some questions about XBOX360/One shmupping
Raiden IV and Fighters are both region locked on 360. They only had JP and US releases, no EU/PAL.
xbone via backwards compatibility just has Ikaruga and Aegis Wing at the moment. They have announced that all titles are possible, they just need developer approval - it's not like original xbox on 360, where a unique emulation solution was written for each chosen game.
No solid news on future xbone shmups. A collection of Triangle Service's "Shooting Love" games was announced at one point but there hasn't been any news since. Raiden V is expected in the West and has been rated by PEGI so should arrive in Europe, but the publisher only usually does digital releases. The Japanese physical release is region free anyway though.

Thanks. Are XBoxOne consoles region free? Could a EU console in theory play Japanese XBox360 games, once (if?) they are supported?

Re: Some questions about XBOX360/One shmupping
xbone is region free for native xbone games. In theory you could have region free backwards compatibility but I don't think there's anything out there at the moment that tests it. The game is downloaded to your console, so it could restrict you to downloading from titles released in your region - or there is a region check present in the emulation layer, so games that carry a lock are still bound to it (you still need the disc in the drive for authentication).
There probably isn't any demand for region locked shmups to get added to backwards compatibility though, given that there are huge selling AAA titles not yet on the service and Microsoft are understandably focusing on monetising it.

Thanks , those were just what I was looking for, I did not even look there. Kind of thought it a bit strange there was no sticky about such things. The title of the thread "XBox360 Japanese owners manual" made me think it was a translation of the instruction manual for the console , and of no interest

Re: Some questions about XBOX360/One shmupping
If I were you, I'd get a Japanese and domestic 360 to cover all the games I'd wanna play. The XBone has a very sparse selection of games in general, with only Raiden V as a physical new release. I highly doubt we will be seeing all those 360 Shoot-'Em-Ups as backwards compatible titles on the Bone. It being a niche genre already, they'll probably wanna sell you the same thing on the new console.
Re: Some questions about XBOX360/One shmupping
That's the intention but they are still pitching in issues as they are highlighted on a game by game basis - more for performance than technical run or not concerns... But still important. A lot of them probably also have licensing issues extending beyond the immediate publisher.TransatlanticFoe wrote:They have announced that all titles are possible, they just need developer approval - it's not like original xbox on 360, where a unique emulation solution was written for each chosen game.

Re: Some questions about XBOX360/One shmupping
First, backwards compatability on Xbox One is confirmed region free, as long as it's on the backwards list, any region works, multiple games have tested it so far.
Also, as far as shmups playable on Xbox One, there's currently:
Raiden V
Steredenn
Gryphon Knight Epic
Teslapunk
Project Root
Geometry Wars 1 and 3
Ikaruga
R-Type Dimensions (1&2)
Aegis Wing
Galaga
Galaga Legions DX
The arcade games seem to be the ones going backwards compatible the quickest, including most SNK and Namco games, who have all released shmups that can go backwards, so there should be more soon, plus a few other shmups specifically for Xbox One have already been announced for release in the next few months.

Wow, thanks for mentioning steredenn. I didn't see its thread in the dev forums until now. Will pick up this weekend!
Re: Some questions about XBOX360/One shmupping
Thanks. None of those titles really interest, except maybe Raiden. Not worth buying a new system for 1 game and I already bought a 360. Just arrived yesterday and I tried using a step down transformer and the damn thing exploded on me , managed to get a few games in first, but I forgot the 360 has a higher requirement than the older consoles. So now I ordered a new 240v power supply from ebay and have to wait a week until I can play it again.MachineAres 1CC wrote:First, backwards compatability on Xbox One is confirmed region free, as long as it's on the backwards list, any region works, multiple games have tested it so far.

Thanks for that XboxOne list. There were a few games I wasn't aware of until now.
