I watched Kung Fury and i loathed it. Technically well made, but mostly excessive and unfunny, precisely what you would expect from a bunch of kids who weren't really there to experience the stuff they are parodying. The only thing i thought was spot on was the soundtrack.

I haven't seen Turbo Kid but if it is more of the same i think i'll pass.

I was disappointed with Kung Fury for the same reasons you were, but TurboKid had me hooked from the opening scene till the last note of the credits. If you liked the music in Kung Fury, I imagine you'll love the music in TurboKid (no disrespect to Mitch Murder and gang, but Le Matos put a lot more heart into TK's OST).

I felt KF was cheesy for the wrong reasons, but TK was cheesy for the right reasons. It's hard to explain, it just all somehow works. Kung is sorta making fun of the nostalgic era, while Turbo actually feels like it's FROM the era. Please don't let KF's missteps cause you to miss out on TK's moments.

This evening I attended The Flight of the Golden Fly director's (Ivan Kravchyshyn) cut's possibly first theatrical screening. Did not drag on at all. Off-screen narration aside, its Galician bucolics reminded me of Italian films most (the likes of Ardena or Cinema Paradiso). Can't be helped if it sounds corny, but I wish more lands (such as the recent darling of mine - Upper Lusatia) received such gentle caress in the movies.

P.S. In hindsight, The Flight of the Golden Fly CAN be viewed as mildly separatist... or it can be seen as ridiculing any such sentiment (what about the grandaddy donating a half of his house to the future Canadian Embassy in Lviv, or the only person said to have ever travelled so far as Kiev - starting to build metro all by himself when back home).
I suppose the side of audience harbouring more totalitarian inclination will perceive it as wishy-washy, too "intelligensia" or whathave you. Oh well... I happen to value putting human face on beings who are only human - no more, no less. When you start making demands on everyone to be angelic - the terror is upon.

A 2003 Japanese movie based on a novel of the same title I assume. A love story and a mystery all in one. Pretty weird for the mystery part as well. Main guy has a lover and goes out one night with her, and strangely as they get back to her place so he can spend the night before leaving on a flight the next morning for work, she goes out to buy apples for his breakfast and doesn't return. Lots of searching and then more relationship stuff after the fact he can't find her, but all in all, I enjoyed it. Well acted and a minimal score to back it.

Not many will admit enjoying Tunnel Rats (when they find it's by Uwe Boll at least), but drauch ought to take a gander. I don't feel it owes me anything more than it gives.

Purple Rain (1984)

My mom never let me watch this when it came out (as I was 9) and the music was basically the hottest shit on the radio. For that, I hated her, but only for a short while. I recorded Let's Go Crazy on cassette (off the radio) and damn near wore the tape out. Anywho, this movie embodies a ton from the 80's, and it's all wrapped up in horrible script and acting. But, luckily, that's not why you'd watch it. It's clearly for the music and Apollonia's ample tits: none of which disappoint.

There are only handful of movies from the 80's that are on the list that I've not seen, and this was one. The only other glaring one (especially now that I live in Chicago) is The Blues Brothers. People look at me cross eyed when I tell them I've yet to see it.

The Jungle Book(2016): ***

Easily a more entertaining movie than the recent live-action Cinderella remake (I thought that one was well produced but ultimately a chore to watch.) None of the CGI was particularly convincing (in particular King Louie just looked incredibly fake) but the story moved along reasonably well, and the acting was decent, and even the obligatory musical numbers didn't seem too gratuitous. It does seem a bit disingenuous to call it a "live action" move though when 90% of it is CGI and green screen...

If you prize the nineteen-seventies as a piece of film history at all, I think you're going to agree The Blues Brothers is more of a seventies' movie to the core (even moreso than Alien and Star Wars perhaps). Sums up the decade's Hollywood film language like no other. The Getaway meets Charlie's Angels way.

watched jurassic world for the first time and wasn't the biggest fan. I had fun with it, but chris pratt was pretty disappointing and bryce dallas howard was so cringeworthy bad. I did like seeing omar sy since I haven't seen him in anything since l'ecume des jours. dinosaur fights were cool I guess..

rewatched The Skeleton Twins last night... originally solo'd it when it was in theaters and boy do I love this movie. It's nice actually seeing Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig play characters with depth and meaty acting. A bit depressing, but some good laughs and not a bad flick for the directors 2nd film. His 3rd is coming out this year and is called Wilson starring Judy Greer, Woody Harrelson, Laura Dern, Cherly Hines, David Warschofsky, Tom Proctor, etc... and I'll definitely be seeing that day one.

another one I've super excited about is the new Bob Byington (7 chinese brothers, harmony and me, somebody up there likes me) movie in pre-production called Infinity Baby starring Nick Offerman, Martin Starr, Megan Mullally, Kieran Culkin, and Kevin Corrigan (one of my favorites). Apparently a comedy about babies who don't age and a company that farms out 3-month-olds. can't wait to hear more about it.

going to be seeing jungle book this weekend and from what I've read it's really not too bad. It's interesting that neel sethi was primarily filmed in a green screen room. the only negative I've really heard is that scarlett johansson seems out of place for the voice of kaa.

Beverly Hills Cop: Caught it on IFC, where they do have commercial breaks but they don't edit for time or content. Though made in '84, it's timeless. Eddie Murphy's humor and the action are spot-on. Steven Berkoff is good as Victor Maitland, the main villain. If they in fact make a BHC 4, they need to go all-out and get that R rating (don't go for PG-13 like Live Free or Die Hard, Terminator Salvation, etc).

This is one other movie franchise that got a rather mediocre computer game, but was actually more deserving of an excellent '90s Capcom beat-em-up. Basically a game version of this should've been Punisher 2, except with Axel Foley, Rosewood, and Taggart (as the slow character packing a mean punch, like Maj. Schaefer in AvP).

Captain America: Civil War 4/5

I'm a sucker for these, so if you already hate the previous Avengers movies, you'll probably won't fully enjoy this. My only gripe was that the 3D didn't work well for the close-up fight scenes, as it kinda turns your brains to mush. LOVED the new Spider-Man.

Absolutely amazing and terrible and amazingly terrible and insanely wonderful borderline-artistic masterpiece of artless nonsense.

Truly one of the weirdest movies, this is a gem and then some. Between Duane Barry's psycopathic overacting, the fact it's a 1985 movie with a '75 aesthetic, and seeing a man kiss Patrick Stewart, I didn't know which I preferred: the randomness of the plot developments or those amazing tits and ass. Ultimately I think the emaciated puppets stole the show, but it's a close run thing.

Trash doesn't get much better than this. Would watch again.

Deadpool. Went exactly as expected of a Deadpool movie, with usual Marvel movies stuff (Stan Lee cameo, lol).

Macbeth (2015) Serviceably adapted and performed; Paddy Considine's armour-piercing murderstare aside, more enjoyed for its cinematography. Ethereal gloom and flair reminded me of Valhalla Rising (2009), a cool but glacially more indulgent doomfest. Not bad at all.

Deadpool (2015) Darkman (1990) with the leering comic book fun and catharsis swapped out for poopdick (lmao), subatomic remains of the pop cultural reference horse, and customarily diverting yet tensionless CGI action. Didn't hate or anything, just winced occasionally and wished I'd rewatched Darkman instead.

Free Willy: **1/2

Another Friday night "Can't find a better alternative" pick off Amazon Prime Video. An angst riddled preteen orphan with bad hair saves the whales, and hits basically every 90s kids movie cliche you can think of along the way. It has the evil executive with a bad suit and a combover (although shockingly he doesn't pull a gun on anyone at the end,) the token "I'm just here to give the teenage boys in the audience awkward boners" girl, the standard issue environmental guilt trip plot, the big climactic ending that you already saw in every commercial break on Nickelodeon for a month before the film came out, the gratuitous Oscar bait song on the closing credits (no Oscar nomination, but it did hit the Billboard chart and win an MTV movie award), and the obligatory 2 or three completely pointless sequels cashing in on the success of the first one. I'm sure this was supposed to be big and serious back in the day, now it's all just ridiculous.

I caught a matinee of Green Room on Saturday and it completely fulfilled my expectations. A nice, tightly wound story that does a good job of ratcheting up the tension and slowly dispensing bursts of nasty violence. I would say that I liked Blue Ruin a bit more, simply because I like that type of story more, but overall I'd say Green Room is just as good a film.

Finally watched two movies that I remembered since the old "Videothek" (German VHS rental stores) days but never rented them or watched them since then. But the titles and/or artwork of these movies stuck with me all these years .

Matinee (Joe Dante / 1993)
This is a loveletter to the 50's /60's cinema era. Fantastic movie, entertaining all the way. Watch it => you will enjoy it .

Serial Mom (John Waters / 1994)
How can you not love a movie where the child shows his mother scenes from movies like "Blood Feast" ? Simple answer => you have to love that one .

Zootopia - a buddy cop story in a world of funny animals. Very fun and endearing. with much more depth than you'd guess at first, and the animation is just perfect. I suppose it's a good sign when a movie feels much shorter than it actually is. A 9/10.

I've seen a few movies lately whilst on holiday. Force Awakens, Batman Vs Superman and Terminator Genisys.

All I can say is what exactly the fuck is going on in Hollywood these days? Force Awakens manages to actually be worse than the Prequel Trilogy by having no soul whatsoever, BvS is one third unwatchable action scenes and the rest shots of people browsing the internet, and Terminator Genesys is just deeply bad in a more traditional sense but I was perhaps expecting that since the franchise has been known to be stone-cold dead since the early nineties.

These are big names, how they can continue to treat them the way they do is beyond explanation (or maybe it isn't, since FA was critically acclaimed - I'm beginning to believe the conspiracy that critics were payed off by Disney, how else do you justify the overwhelmingly positive reception)?

BvS: stick with the comics and the DC animated stuff, this shit was like wannabe art house cinema. Truly awful.
