Dreamcast: The Shooting

Post by Kiken »

Since we have confirmation on Under Defeat being the last official DC game, I've decided to begin organizing everything for my second review video: Dreamcast: The Shooting (mostly due to the fact that I wanted to make a video like this and partly due to the fact that most folks on here found Yakumo's Dreamcast Shooting Special less than flattering). ;)

Here's the list of games that the video will cover (the video will be split by screen formats):

Yoko Screen Format:
Giga Wing
Giga Wing 2
Mars Matrix
Twinkle Star Sprites
Chaos Field
GunSpike
Zero Gunner 2
Border Down
Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaio

Tate Screen Format:
Gunbird 2
Rajirugi
Under Defeat
Ikaruga
Trizeal
Shikigami No Shiro 2
Psyvariar 2: The Will to Fabricate

I prefer to show Tate games full-screen, if anything "to display them in their full glory", as their Yoko modes are often too small or cramped (this can result in considerable loss of detail after video compression).

In regards to Bangaio and GunSpike (aka Cannon Spike), I consider them shmuppy enough to fall under the classification.

I do have a question though:
Should I include the 2 rail shooters (Rez and Rainbow Cotton)?

Please note that the list is already equal to the list of games I covered in the Neo-Geo Shooting Special, meaning as is, the video will be somewhere around the 80 minute mark.

With any luck, I'll be able to finish the video sometime in April.

i'd say include the rails. as i've seen very little of rez (on dreamcast anyway) and none of Rainbow cotton.

and while they aren't "shmups", it seems like they'd be nice little curiosities to throw into the mix.

and thanks again for the awesome Neo Geo Shooting Special, i look forward to the DC version very much. :D

I still find it amazing how many shooters hit DC after Sega pulled the plug on it. Really shows how a vocal fanbase can sway niche developers.

Look forward to the video, BTW we still don't know if Radigry has a true TATE mode. *-neo

It says so on the Sega Direct page. However, this is not the first time a game was called "the last DC game", so who knows. As long as new Naomi shmups are being made, there is always hope for more, I guess.

I would vote no. Your video will carry a lot of weight with the newcomers to the scene. It builds the perception of those games being shooters.

...it's not that big of an issue, just saying.

Seconded. They can be seen on Yakumo's video anyway.

Really looking forward to this, good luck!

Although I semi-agree with the above, I would include the rails because they're cool games and most people who enjoy shmups tend to enjoy rail shooters as well. You can always comment on the fact that they're not 'true' shooters.

If you're gonna review Ikaruga, you better show VTF-INO as playing it...I can't picture anyone else otherwise. :D

I am also voting 'no'. Including Rez and Rainbow Cotton would just dilute the video, which should be all about hardcore shooting action.

Is the video supposed to be comprehensive? I.e. are these all the shooting games that have come out on DC?

Yes it is. Everything that we except as falling squarely under the genre, as well as two damn-close pseudo-shmups.

Rez and Cotton should be included, They may not be 2D shooters in teh conventional sense but they are still close enough to be classified as 'specials' for the video (looking forward to seeing this)

Personally i would devote a smaller amount of time to Rez and Rainbow Cotton. While they're not shmups in the strict sense of the word, it would be raher difficult to get a pertinent coverage without your special

Looking forward to the video. As for the rail-shooters, I say include them. They're certainly related, and you can always give them their own segment with a genre disclaimer. I agree with oxtsu's concern, but it can also be an opportunity to educate newcomers if you include them but explain why the inclusion had to be debated. Anyway, Rez is so unique and such an visual experience that I think it deserves coverage.

I am also voting no on rainbow cotton and rez. Maybe even more so for rez since Cotton is at least part of a shmup franchise, and unlike rez, was actually relatively obscure. The issue in my mind is that after making this strange exception to include games like Rez, you will surely be omitting other titles that are also shmuppy (in fact, if Rez should be included, why not the couple of light gun games that came out?) I've never understood why people are so willing to make an exception for Rez (Which is so unlike a traditional shooter in EVERY sense) but fight against run & guns, tube-shmups, arena shooters, or even first person shooters. Folks, doom is more of a shmup than rez (you can shoot waves of enemies and dodge their shots!), as is megaman which also involves shooting and dodging.

Rez involves lock-ons and funky music. What on earth does it have to do with shmups?

You should include them. Just for the fact that their import games that some people haven't heard of. It could be a cool surprise for new Dreamcasters.

Maybe Rainbow Cotton, but Rez is cheaper ($20) and better on ps2, and at that price it's certainly not something you'd need to see and give a lot of thought about before you purchase, particularly since some will avoid this otherwise-great game because of the wire-frame graphics, based on the special. Wow, that was a long sentence.

I'm pretty sure the DC release is just bangai-o, with the longer name being reserved for the jN64 version.

I've most of them, but I'll still be downloading it for the (hopefully funny) commentary. Some must-add info would be availability of ports on other consoles, and more facts than opinions (IMO ;) ). Also, please take it easy on whatever part of Psyvariar 2 you play (a good bit would be the hidden boss most haven't accessed), I'm not a huge fan of the game myself but it is hugely misunderstood by the community, as it's pretty unique.

I think in terms of what is and is not a shmup for the case of Cotton and Rez, it might be best to make a completely separate video entitled "Not Quite Shmups" or something of the sort. And you can actually expound on the nature and why it was determined that the games covered aren't truly classified as shmups.

The full Japanese DC title is Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaiou.

I do plan to include a cover shot of the Japanese version with release info (what regions got the game and what possible title changes occured) as well as ports (which will be current as of the time when this is compiled) for each game. So it'll be more comprehensive than the Neo-Geo Shooting Special.

Bangai-O is the U.S. release. The jDC version is still Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh.

Seeing more coverage of Rez would be awesome, but I don't think this will be the place for it. So, I vote no on the rail shooters.

Sounds excellent Kiken, Godspeed on this video! :D

I would have to vote out the rail shooters as well; although I can't remember if Yakumo ever covered Rez on the DC.

Kiken, you should have added a poll. For some reason people in these forums never use them. A shame really, becuase they can be a lot of fun.

On another note, I would hate to be you when you start the PS2 shooting special ;)
