SFC/SNES cart swaps?

Post by neorichieb1971 »

Can you put a USA SNES rom PCB into a SFC shell and vice versa?

Or is there more to it than that?

If there are some games I want in English but not pay through the ass for them, was thinking of doing this, at least temporarily whilst I am playing it.

Is this to play on a PAL SNES or an SFC? Normally the suggested approach to playing both NA and JP games is to get an NA SNES because it's easier to put JP carts in an NA SNES than it is to put NA carts in a JP SNES.

You could always just remove the top shell of the console while playing the NA carts in the JP console, if it's just a temporary thing and you don't want to mod the console.

Using a NA SNES is the easy option, but that console is just so damn ugly. I've also considered to put a NA Yoshi's Island PCB into a Japanese cart, but never actually did it (the prices for Nintendo games are just insane atm). My guess is that it works.

I was thinking of taking the innards out of the SFC cart, put the English text version innards in it instead. Plugging that into the SFC console.

I don't do PAL, even though I am in the UK. I will be buying SFC and USA NTSC Carts only. I know there aren't any technicalities (I'm pretty sure) with one working with the other. From what I've read elsewhere its just that NTSC USA carts are bigger than their SFC counterparts in the shell. But I don't know if the innards are the same size or if the way they are bolted in is different.

On the n64 I can change the backs of the cart shells to fit whatever region console I want to play on. Thought the SNES/SFC was similar.

Thanks,

Richie.

I'm pretty sure the US SNES carts will not fit into a Super Famicom without butchering the shell.

This is not about fitting a NA SNES cart into a Super Famicom console, it's about fitting an NA SNES cart PCB into a SFC cart shell.

Just tried it with two random games and yes, you can put a US pcb into a JP shell and vice versa. Not sure if there are any exceptions, but I think the shells are universal and can hold any game.

Edit: Just remembered that Super FX games have more ports, so the shells aren't 100% universal.

Thanks very much for the verification. Its excellent news. As certain games I'd just rather not have to worry about text.

As an SFC owner (the console is aesthetically a lot nicer in my opinion) I've used US games in it no problem. You can either

1) Remove the top lid temporarily
2) Cut around the edge of the cartridge slot (gross!)
3) Put a US game PCB in an SFC shell
4) Burn the US game to an EPROM or 29F* flash ROM, etc. and sacrifice your SFC game (I did this with Mother 2)

5) Use an import adapter, i.e. Honey Bee or similar.

6) make your own disgusting import adapter out of an old SFC cart and a spare slot:

A T-Connector also works, though it looks a little funny in the console. I recently repurposed the plastic shell for a Super Game Converter to fit over the T-Connector because the Super Game Converter requires a second game to be inserted, while the T-Connector does not as long as the switch is set to the 1 position. Had to cut a little bit of plastic away on the inside of the shell, but after that it fit almost perfectly.

T-Connectors were originally made for use with the old Tototek SNES Super Flash Cart. They can still be bought for relatively cheap here but of course they don't come with a plastic shell and unfortunately the ones being sold now no longer include the longer cartridge connector allowing you to play e.g., Super FX chip games with the extra pins at the sides.

Eventually I'm hoping that BuffaloWing finishes his SFC cartridge slot mod as talked about in this topic.

The Super Fami has tons of rubbish sports, taisen and gambling games and you choose to destroy a Super Genjin cart? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?

The cart was broken, the label was torn at the top, what else do you want me to do with it?

That is what I opted to do. Fetching things is too much of a bother.

Something like this, would be way more preferable.

Hasn't someone made an adapter? I have one for JP games on a NA console.

Adapters are not generally required to play JP games on an NA console, because all that's stopping you is two little tabs inside the cartridge slot that can be removed, which is an invisible mod.
