Void Pyramid (It's an RPG.)

Post by Andi »

Hey folks! You probably don't remember me. It's been a while but I'm still shmupping.

I wanted to drop in and let everyone know that I made a new game. It's called Void Pyramid. It's a post-apocalyptic RPG set in the spacefaring Egyptian empire. It's been in development for 18 months and is available for free on PC, Mac, Android, and OUYA. It has all original graphics and music, as well as a unique setting and mechanics.

I've been working really hard on Void Pyramid and have been testing it exhaustively. Please give it a try and let me know what you think.

You can visit here to see some screenshots and download it on PC or Mac. Or you can get it on Google Play.

There is also a video trailer.

Some features include:

*Choose to be a soldier, slave, or scribe. Overcome challenges with your unique skills.

*Explore the intricately designed pyramid. Each chamber is packed with foes, puzzles, traps, treasures, and other interesting stuff.

*Develop your character however you want with an unusual but intuitive advancement system.

*Use your brawn, wits, and agility stats to kick down doors, bend bars, hack computers, haggle with merchants, dodge traps, scale walls, and more.

*Find numerous solutions to every problem. Explore multiple paths through the pyramid. Experience alternate endings. Fight optional bosses. Discover hidden treasures.

*Experience a unique vision of the future. In the spacefaring future, the Egyptian empire has risen again. The Prime Pharaoh’s mutant armies oppress mankind.

Thanks again for trying it! I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences.

Good to hear! Keep me posted on your progress. What characters are you guys playing as? What area are you in?

An old school fan! Good to hear from you again. I like your Princess Tomato avatar as well. You've been using that for years now, I think.

I started out as a Scribe. Haven't played very long yet—only an hour.

The thing I like most are the descriptions. Reminds me of the old text-based adventure games, with a graphical interface. I also like the simplified elements, where things like "Serum" and "Weapon" have very definite uses, so I'm playing them like strategy cards in a complicated board game.

I play a lot of tabletop role-playing games. The interactive environments and descriptive text in Void Pyramid are an attempt to recreate the feeling of those vintage role-playing modules. That's actually why the video trailer opens with a shot of a heap of role-playing books.

Thinking of the items as cards in a board game is interesting. It makes sense since board games often have very easy to understand resource management challenges. Void Pyramid is much like that. The combat is not really tactical, it is mostly a means for the player to gain and lose resources. The strategy of the game has to do with exploring efficiently and minimizing risk.

Let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas. Although it is completed and very polished, it is still in active development. I'm ready to add or changes things.

Thanks for taking the time to play!

I read an SF novel about outer space reconaissance mission carried by a vessel sent out by civilisation rooted in ancient Egypt (alternative history). It was not very good, but the premise did feel fresh.

What's the name of it? I'm always looking for something different to read.

The Egyptian setting made sense for Void Pyramid because it was a stratified society (divided into distinct financial classes), and has a rich and interesting mythology. I didn't follow too closely to history or mythology. I just used enough to give it some flavor. Most of the cool Egyptian deities and mythological creatures make an appearance.

You'll notice that marmosets (which are a kind of monkey) are common in the game world. They are actually from South America, not Africa or the Middle East. Why are they in the Void Pyramid? No one knows. Maybe a future expansion will elaborate on this mystery.

I know the whole Egyptians in space thing isn't the most common theme in the world, but some people here are acting like it's totally unheard of and star gate isn't / wasn't a thing.

game looks interesting though, i'll give it a go when I next get an rpg urge!

Misja Ramzesa Wielkiego (literally The Mission of Ramesses the Great) by Konrad T. Lewandowski (Polish writer). Neither all that great a book in my opinion, nor do I think any English translation exists. I liked how depicted world was put together, is all.

I like the Void Pyramid title; also, slave class sounds intriguing (can't think of many games giving me such a choice).

Has anyone made significant progress in Void Pyramid yet? Let me know where you're at and what you've liked and hated. Do you find the game easy or challenging? Is there any puzzles that don't make sense? Which music is the best? Which monsters look the coolest?

The slave class is my favorite. However, the scribe seems to be the favorite among players thus far. Damn that ivory tower!

Was this made in OHRRPGCE? It looks like it was (fonts, etc). Looks cool, I'll have to give it a whirl.

It definitely was. It uses a turn-based single hero vs. single monster battle system that is akin to Dragon Quest 1, rather than OHR's more typical real-time Final Fantasy-esque battle system.

It's cool that you noticed it was OHRRPGCE. Have you messed with the engine before?

I've never done any development in it, but I've played a number of games made in it before, so it was fairly recognizable.

Have you ever played any of the Phantasie games? This is what I immediately thought of, and I love the style.

I've read some about Phantasie, but never played it. I just read a little bit more after you recommended it.

I'm currently working my way through Wizardry 7 (what a great and terrible game), but I think I'm going to give Phantasie a shot. Should I start with the first one, or one of the sequels?

I have never played any of the sequels (yet), and I haven't quite finished the first one, so I am not sure. It is tough, but more accessible than the early Wizardry games.
