World champion players - what are they like??
I'm talking about regular tournament champions and world record holders. Like Daigo "The Beast" for example. What is a player like that really like? What does he do besides play that game? Does he have a real job? Did he inherit a fortune? Does he live with parents? Does he go to college? Does he have a wife and kids?? Or what???

I agree. I just play for fun. I shouldn't have to obsess on attaining a WR score, because that would just suck the fun out of the game that you're playing. If I feel confident with my ability, then I'll probably try to establish a high score, but not a WR.Rob wrote:In all of Alaska!
It makes me sad when people obsess about the WR players either way (worship/negativity). When I first got into playing shooters for score way back in 2002, there was very little discussion of WR players and for lowly new guys like me the better forum member feats (like Mode 7's) were amazing, but eventually reachable. Now it seems some people are joining the board and comparing themselves to the top top scores right away. It's ridiculous and probably one of the reasons there is less action in the high score forum for our own "local" competition.
In conclusion:
Uhm, Clover-Tac (and the other two Clovers) should be CS students, but by now they probably work or whatever...Daigo sounds like some kind of thug secretly linked to Yakuza, and SYO might be some salaryman (but with manager status) in a big company. Most of them appear to be in that kind of lifestyle/work that allows for a few hours of freedom a day, basically. I doubt anyone of them has ever been able to bench-press more than 100 kgs (220lbs circa for the metrical-challenged), though.
In short, i doubt that ace players have one gazillion hobbies and other time-consuming activities.Aside shmups, i mean.

yeah well, speaking as pretty much a newcomer to high-scoring(since about last year), (tho i have played arcade games/shmups on/off since 1985) i dont ever really bother to list my high scores at all, as i would ALWAYS be near the bottom of the table, even tho i thought to myself i had done really well and it is quite disconcerting. tho i hope things will change with the release of ibara, and i get to play it from the start and hopefully will be able to compete better with you lot ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Daigo etc

Oh...and I can bench 100kgs
but not much more than that.
I stood and watched Daigo play when he came to the Troc/London about a year ago. He's no "Thug", just a bit diminutive and highly skilled. He has a sidekick crouching next to him, constantly assessing his challengers & giving strat and character selection advice. This is how he beat my friend Joey Zazza in the final of SFII Turbo - Joe was winning & Daigo's strat guy got him to switch to the right character & win. The Japanese were rattled enough by Joey Zazza to write a column on him in Arcadia the next month.Uhm, Clover-Tac (and the other two Clovers) should be CS students, but by now they probably work or whatever...Daigo sounds like some kind of thug secretly linked to Yakuza, and SYO might be some salaryman (but with manager status) in a big company. Eh, i can't anymore (i'm out of shape now), but i also spend most of my time studying
In general, though, it seems that most of these guys combine dedication with a life not heavily burdened by any other activities. SYO said in the interview for the Ketsui DVD that he played for 3-4 hours a day...i may play for 3-4 hours a week, right now

i know it was a joke but i dont understand why the general opinion on pro-players seem to be that it is impossible to balance videogaming with other activities?Marc wrote:No Life?
sure it takes alot of practice but so does everything else, nobody questions pro-athletes lifestyles even tho they proboably practice a whole lot more?
i was a competition swimmer once and we practiced 2-3hours every day, 4 on weekends, and i wasent even any good, the real pros did atleast double that..
the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..
Well if you're playing Ibara for four hours a night, working 8-10 hours and sleeping 6-8, it oesn't leave much room to cram anything else in there does it?sven666 wrote:i know it was a joke but i dont understand why the general opinion on pro-players seem to be that it is impossible to balance videogaming with other activities?Marc wrote:No Life?

Seriously. I wish I could be a bit more serious about my gaming, but I'm usually content these days if I get half an hour in a day, and plenty of days don't give me that. It's actually easier for me to find time for posting here, since I work at my computer a lot.Marc wrote:Well if you're playing Ibara for four hours a night, working 8-10 hours and sleeping 6-8, it oesn't leave much room to cram anything else in there does it?sven666 wrote:i know it was a joke but i dont understand why the general opinion on pro-players seem to be that it is impossible to balance videogaming with other activities?Marc wrote:No Life?

There are actually two different episodes.doctorx0079 wrote:Probably True Life. They did a show about pro wrestlers once that was kind of interesting. I would love to see the pro gamers one. Unfortunately I would have to actually watch MTV to do that.Marc wrote:No Life?
