Perfect Cherry Blossom. Although last time I checked it's the only game in the Touhou series that was fan-translated completely in English and the story was actually pretty good for a shmup, the Cherry Point system feels very broken to me. Having a special ability that you really can't control and forces you not to use it when it does activate in order to increase your score is not my idea of a good gameplay mechanic.
That, and Yomu's and Yuyuko's difficulty on normal is not normal. Oh, I'm also not fond of the danmaku style in this game for some reason. I guess it's because it's a little bit too random and not as focused like in Imperishable Night.

Welcome, ahnslaught. It's interesting you say that, because for a Compile shmup I find the levels not SOOO long. But there's no denying that they are long.ahnslaught wrote:Hi all, I'm new to the forums here...
Anyways, back when it first came out, I thought MUSHA was great; however, playing it recently, I didn't really like it too much because the levels just seemed to drag on forever. Music's still great, though!
console/arcade stuff only, if I started listing PC doujins I could never finish the list:
Radiant Silvergun
Border Down
Gradius series
R-Type series
Giga Wing 2+Generations
Raiden 3
Shikigami series
Image Fight
everything Compile
Terra Diver
Twin Cobra 2
Psyvariar series
Raystorm+Crisis
Kingdom Grandprix
1944
Thunderforce 4
Shienryu Explosion
Silpheed 2
Seeing such a long list, one might think I don´t care for the genre, but the list of shmups I love is twice as long.

I don't think I've ever made such a comment, but some of the fanboyism surrounding the games is irritating. They have good graphics, are made by Treasure, who have a lot of fanboys, and came out on consoles which have a lot of fanboys, so you've got a lot of people liking them for just these reasons (being fanboys/graphics whores). As such a lot of the discussion surrounding the games isn't incredibly intelligent.Rob wrote:I think people have an opinion of why those games aren't fun and also opinions of Treasure-philia, which are two different things. Honestly haven't seen anyone use that as a reason to "attack" the games. To make a cheap punchline, sure. Guilty.Acid King wrote:I've seen a ton of people shit on Ikaruga and Silvergun and keep harping on the fact that "mainstreamers" think they're the best shooters ever. Thats not attacking a game on the merits of the game, it's attacking it because of some bullshit image that people have in their heads cause they see themselves as more knowledgable and any opinion of someone not like them instantly turns to shit.
That said I still get some enjoyment from Ikaruga from time to time. I played it enough to 1CC it on Easy and Normal. RS I don't like so much but if you like/dislike it based on the gameplay I'm not likely to make fun of you too much.
Shame to see so many people listing Shippu Mahou. I can definitely understand it not being a hit with the 'mindless fun' crowd, but it's incredibly original and thought-provoking, probably the 3rd best Raizing title behind Garegga and Batrider (fuck Bakraid and its excessive suiciding/invisibullets).
Way back in the early 80's everyone was screaming about the coolness of Zaxxon. "Hey man, this new game is in like 3D! It's totally awesome!" Well, when I played it, I thought, "Damn, this thing is slow." And after 20 minutes of playing it, "What's wrong with these people? This game is crap!"
You know, it wouldn't surprise me if Zaxxon was a direct descendent of Halo.

border down: the graphics are too cold, i don't like the elevator music, i can't get used to the gameplay. i'm been warming up to it a bit recently though.
mars matrix, battle garegga, radiant: i love them but only playing the wrong way (blasting through them not caring about score)
ikaruga: the style is amazing, but i stopped playing after 1CC with a shit score, i'll never get used to this kind of chaining.
galuda: i don't like the score system, the music is contact fm stuff and everything looks "flat".

I agree. Plus, the game is so damn hard.Plasmo wrote:-Soukyugurentai
this game looks absolutely great but i HATE the net laser
Psyvariar 2 is another one that I don't care for anymore. Amazing graphics and super cool gameplay, but I just can't get into it anymore, probably because I've only beaten it once (I got lucky), and haven't been able to beat it again. I'm not a fan of the whole buzzing thing either.
Me likes it very much. It's hard and I've never 1CC'd it but I don't think it's unfair. Someone here wrote he doesn't like the music ?! Really?J-Manic wrote:I agree. Plus, the game is so damn hard.Plasmo wrote:-Soukyugurentai

BTW, i really don't mean to be anal, but since it's often used around here: "Souky" is not a valid abbreviation!
The name consists of three words:
Soukyuu means "Blue Sky"
Gu (kurenai) means "Crimson"
Renatai means "Regiment"
So please call it Soukyu if you must, but please not "Souky", that's just wrong (because the syllables are "Sou" and "kyuu"). Remember how we laugh about Japanglish?
Why not?Ceph wrote:BTW, i really don't mean to be anal, but since it's often used around here: "Souky" is not a valid abbreviation!

蒼穹紅蓮隊
そうきゅうぐれんたい <- Soukyuugurentai
そうき <- Souki (which writes more naturally in English as Souky)
Treating the glide as its components instead of as a syllable... certainly I could see the Japanese being guilty of such an abbreviation. I somewhat remember them saying it in game in the Playstation port, even.
Edit - On original topic, about half of Raizing/8ing's shooty games click with me (I love Souky) and the other half will never seem to catch my interest for any period of time (sorry Batrider).

@nZero: I assume that "Souky" stems from someone with no knowledge of Japanese who thought he could divide up "Soukyugurentai" into "Souky Ugurentai".
A quick search on google for "蒼穹紅蓮隊" and "そうき" reveals that no-one in Japan is using そうき as abreviation for 蒼穹紅蓮隊. And when you search for "蒼穹紅蓮隊" and "Souky" you get 0 results. QED

Radiant Silvergun uses the same hardware, composer, and basic idea (redoing of the same melody for each song) and does it a lot better. I'm not a huge fan of the game but the soundtrack is good, in a 'omg drama' way. Soukyugurentai...eh, I would never listen to that shit out of the game. It's just another aspect of the game that pales next to Garegga.Someone here wrote he doesn't like the music ?! Really?
Sorry if I sound like an ass, but isn't this getting a little recappish? Soukyugurentai, Souky for when I don't feel like typing out Soukyugurentai, you're missing the entire meaning any way you abbreviate it anyways.
Quoted for truth. How is that Japanese are free to create any neologism they want, and we shmuppers, this very forum community can't even create a shorthand. I don't see anything offensive in "Souky".Neon wrote:Sorry if I sound like an ass, but isn't this getting a little recappish? You should e-mail Japan and tell them to desist with the conjoining of English words. It is unnatural. Tell those lazy asses to stop saying "ice-ooo." It's ice cream.Ceph wrote: A quick search on google for "蒼穹紅蓮隊" and "そうき" reveals that no-one in Japan is using そうき as abreviation for 蒼穹紅蓮隊. Well, to be fair, if you use "Soukyu" instead, you do get the first part of the 2-part title.Neon wrote: Sorry if I sound like an ass, but isn't this getting a little recappish? OK, I'll say it-I HATE Gradius V!
The game is completely unbalanced, in terms of difficulty-a boss rush at the end of STAGE 2?! WTF Konami?!
Secondly, the weapon configuration types-getting to freeze your options is great, but Type 2 has a ridiculous learning curve, and the other types are largely worthless.
Finally-the graphics. Sure, they look pretty, but it's difficult to tell what's in the background and what's not. And the game has more tight spaces then any other shmup I've played.
I would put this up for trade on the Trading Station, but probably everyone who wants the US NTSC rev. already has it.

I hate almost every single Psikyo shooter out there!
Same thing in almost every single shooter with a really fucking hard bullet patterns. What makes things even worse is that the first four levels are totally different, which makes guys like me never learn the bullet patterns. The Striker series, Gunbird, Dragon Blaze, and Samurai Aces and Tengai, god I just hate them!
The only series I enjoy playing was the Zero Gunner games, and that's it. Psikyo lovers, how the hell you can play the same thing over and over again?
Before Psikyo became Psikyo, they where with Video Systems, and made the Aero Fighters (Sonic Wings) series. I love those games so much, and the bullet patterns were great!
