PSP - PS1 emulation

Post by Elbaid »

How accurate is PS1 emulation using a PSP?

I'm using Mednafen on a powerful PC, but it doesn't support modeline switching which would give it that extra authenticity.
Silent hill, for example, uses 480i for the inventory screen and 240p for gameplay, switching as needed. Does the PSP support this while connected to a CRT? Say a Sony PVM.

Does it support 60fps?
Is the compatibility good?
Would the performance be inferior to that of a good PC running Mednafen?
Too much hassle for the few games that switch modes mid-game?

Thanks for reading

*EDIT* If this is a viable option, which PSP would be best for this purpose? thanks

You should take a look at My Life in Gaming's episode on PS1 RGB. They go over all the options, and the PSP (both the regular and go) are covered, including connecting them to displays like a PVM.

Thanks for the link, exactly what I needed.

So the psp supports mode switching, but it isn't seemless.
No reason to use it over pc emulation then

A PSP Go works best and supports 60fps just fine.

I've got a couple games that switch from 480i to 240p.

Perhaps should test same game on real hardware vs PSP
