Kirby superstars SFC - English friendly?

Post by neorichieb1971 »

I just started a SFC collection going. This is one game on my wanted list.

Can I play the game for the SFC without and understanding of Japanese?

Thanks all.

Richie.

I never played the Jap version of the game (got one on its way in the mail as we speak, coincidentally), but there's definitely nothing in it that requires understanding of the text. Apart from some mainly superflous guides in the beginning of each sub-game (if there's anything you don't get, you can look it up online I'm sure), it's all flavour text.

^ Good to hear! (also, good to see you around again!) I impulsively nabbed a copy last year because peeps in sidescroller thread liek it and I do love HAL's mastery of impactful cartoon violence. Have yet to play it much unfortunately but I did wonder if there was any language barrier.

Make sure to get it CIB or you miss out on its little-known secondary feature, wood-based optic camouflage :O

I've only had the DS version for years, and when I decided to pick up the SFC original so I could enjoy it with a pal on the big screen, the first auction with the box art made me click "Buy it now" immediately. It's a great example of Japanese video game artwork just being that more awesome.

Only example I can think of is that the pause menu has move lists for the various copy powers. One thing that sets this game apart from other Kirby's is the violence that Bil mentioned, which comes from the larger number of moves Kirby has at his disposable. For example IIRC Ninja Hat has the ability to do an izuna drop at close range, as well as a projectile shock wave attack by doing light double taps of the attack button. Of course, I'm sure any player here will likely be savvy enough to discover these on their own via experimentation, or by consulting an faq/

Do the moves have graphical prompts?

I don't even remember the move list >_> I probably never opened it. I'm fairly sure it's mostly graphics and symbols? Descriptive text doesn't feel very "kirby-like".

edit: Found this screenshot. Seems it's actually discriptive text :O

Anyway, as Squire said, most of the moves are intuitive enough to figure out on your own

I played through the JP version and I agree with what was said above. I beat it without being able to read Japanese.

KSS plays a great deal like Smash Bros. and the commands are simple and intuitive.

You should do fine, even with the language barrier.
