Amiga CD32 Expander

Post by the_crayon_king »

I recently purchased a PAL Amiga CD32. I'm googling up some accessories like: replacement AC, replacement controller, capacitors, etc.
Then I ran across the expansion options listed here: http://amiga.resource.cx/search.pl?amiga=cd32

Is anyone familiar with this stuff or know what I should get or if its even needed ?

I like to kit my consoles fully out with whatever allows me to play the most of the library.
If there is something like the PSXio that would be nice.

I'm not familiar with this system at all. I have everything else bought and on its way just wondering about the expansion stuff.
If anyone could get me in the right direction that would be nice.

Being as the CD32 is basically an Amiga, just consolised in a last-ditch attempt to grab some revenue by Commodore, there were several expansions released for it that basically transformed it into a full Amiga computer. If you want to play the entire library of Amiga games, something like an SX32, a compact flash card and a copy of WHDLoad will do that. While WHDLoad also supports CD32 games, it's not quite there yet and things like CD audio soundtracks are missing, even if you have the CD in the drive.

SX32 and similar expansions are rare now, so expect to pay significant sums if you can find one. You could also hold out for Project Hermes which is basically a homebrew created SX32 - https://ianstedman.wordpress.com/

Well, something like an A1200 already has IDE and RGB built in, which means it's easy (well, relatively, needs some knowledge of Amiga's OS, but there's plenty of tutorials) to add a CF card and use WHDLoad to play all your games. For the CD32 such expansions are rare and expensive. CD32 does have external keyboard and built in CD-ROM though, which can be useful now that most Amiga's aren't primary PCs at a regular desk.
