Re: puzzle oriented websites
I haven't really checked it out yet (damn VOOT dominating my video game time), but I bookmarked this site after it was mentioned in a Puyo Puyo thread:

Re: puzzle oriented websites
jeez - puzzlemups - was that me? I dont even remember doing that! Seems liked a good idea at the time. While we're at it, my fave is now Puzzle. Absolutely massively brilliant.
Re: puzzle oriented websites
necroposting
I am also interested in getting a said site up and running. Does anyone have a list of puzzle video games to dive into?

Re: puzzle oriented websites
Not an expert on the field, but the best ones I know of are
Puyo Puyo series: Compile's classic, I think 2 is the most played version? I think this series was the first to include the concept of sending pieces to the opponent and being able to counter those pieces with your own clears, which was a staple to most (all?) versus competitive puzzle games.
Magical Drop 3: An absolute masterpiece by Data East, set apart from most others by its simple but blistering fast style.
Super Puzzle Fighter 2: A Capcom version of the Puyo Puyo format.
These three are best when played against a human, not as interesting when played against the AI.
Tetris the Grand Master series: Takes the basic Tetris formula and polishes and improves on it. Major characteristics are the improved random piece generator (which prevents many pieces of a same type from appearing in a row), being able to move and turn the pieces just before they are set (which allows you to put them in places it was impossible before), sound cues for each piece to tell which one is coming without watching, multiple play modes, interesting scoreplay, etc. Dunno which one is the preferred version by Tetris players, I play TGM2+ and 3 seem to be the most played from what I've seen.
Tetris Plus 2: Interesting take by Jaleco, you have to let the little explorer reach the goal by clearing his path.
Puzzle Bobble series: Taito's most popular puzzle games, dunno which is the best version but they are all enjoyable from what I've played.
Land Maker: Cool game with rather complex mechanics, you group pieces from the same color, but if you place them in square patterns you create buildings that give extra score and drop more pieces to the opponent side, also taking away from his/her play area. Takes some time to get accustomed to but looks like an interesting take on the Puyo Puyo style of puzzles.
Cachat: Another unique game by Taito in which you must connect pieces in such a way to lead an electrode from one side of the play area to the other, which clears the connected pieces. Haven't played it that much but seemed to play well, is quite challenging as pieces quickly start to fall pretty fast, and feels fresh.
Puzz Loop: the original game by Mitchell that lots of crappy flash companies got free money from.
Noteworthy games that I haven't really played but seemed interesting: Cleopatra Fortune and Noukone Puzzle Takoron. Probably missing many good ones, but I think that covers the most well known ones at least. It's a shame the genre is so unpopular, there are amazing games in it.

Thanks for the response! BulletMagnet's post actually inspired me to go look for more.
Re: puzzle oriented websites
how could you omit Panel De Pon? great, great tile swapping game.
I also really like lumines, mostly as a single player game though. not as keen on the vs mode in that game, but the gimmick of stealing part of the other players playing area by playing better than them is a really interesting idea.
