How do you guys get your gaming news?
So, I'm just going to say that I don't like the direction most major game "journalism" sites are headed in. I've used Destructoid for the longest time, but it's been becoming increasingly obvious that they've been headed in that same direction for a long time.
Point is, I need a new site to look at for game news, and it seems incredibly difficult to find one that doesn't have some kind of underlying political bias to it.
So what sites do you guys use? Any sites out there that just focus on games without bringing political nonsense into the mix?
Maybe not even a site? Maybe YouTube channels?

Siliconera. I also use Destructoid, but there's been too many assholes and SJW's running the place now.
Eurogamer seems a good option.

I use Siliconera, though it focuses on Japanese (and indie as of late) releases.
Oprainfall serves similar purposes, and TinyCartridge is mostly about handheld releases.
If you are interested in big-budget AAAAAAAAA "game"-related news, those refrences may not be useful.

When you say big budget, you just mean stuff like COD and FIFA right? If that's the case Siliconera sounds good; I've mainly been interested in indie and Japanese stuff.

Re: How do you guys get your gaming news?
I meant stuff like COD or FIFA indeed.
Siliconera should be right up your alley then.

NeoGAF since nearly all news I might be interested in is posted there. there's a stigma along with the site, but I haven't had an issue since I started there in 2010.
it's really a one-sided positive perspective on everything, but most fresh/rumored news gets posted there. only problem is that the board moves really fast, so it helps having an account to subscribe to the threads that you want to follow (I'm sitting at 696 subscriptions right now haha).

Gematsu is better than Siliconera. IMO Siliconera's news titles are often too clickbaity.

My friend runs 8 Bit Horse, focusing only on 2D action/adventure games.
http://www.8bithorse.com
It does have a lot of indie games, by nature of covering 2D, but of course covers big things like Rayman Legends, Dragon's Crown, Shantai, etc.
The meat of the articles is to cover the gameplay mechanics, not review the games in the traditional sense.
For the newest info use the "2D Radar" for a massive list of upcoming 2d games.

Making a run 'n' gun with a transforming grappling hook: ChainStaff. Also made a shmup with multi-ships: Shoot 1UP DX, and more .

Neogaf is probably one of the best for news and release topics for sure, just don't post any criticisms or any flaw you could possibly see in a game because you'll be instantly banned.Some-Mist wrote:NeoGAF since nearly all news I might be interested in is posted there. there's a stigma along with the site, but I haven't had an issue since I started there in 2010.

I've gotten away with a fair share of telltale bashing, but yea... anything posted against the grain usually has to be done with caution. and you don't want to post anything that would seem even remotely close to trolling.Strikers1945guy wrote:Neogaf is probably one of the best for news and release topics for sure, just don't post any criticisms or any flaw you could possibly see in a game because you'll be instantly banned.Some-Mist wrote:NeoGAF since nearly all news I might be interested in is posted there. there's a stigma along with the site, but I haven't had an issue since I started there in 2010.

Re: How do you guys get your gaming news?
I get mine from a combination of all the main sites (IGN, Polygon, Joystiq, etc) plus twitter and game forums.
I quite like Polygon, they seem to be the least biased of all the major sites.

Re: How do you guys get your gaming news?
I used to read RockPaperShotgun and a couple other sites mostly pertaining to indie games, later stopped reading those and got my news from Reddit (mostly /r/Games), and now I don't really follow gaming news except occasionally clicking on interesting links on the Gamasutra Twitter feed and seeing what's trending on SteamSpy.
Re: How do you guys get your gaming news?
NeoGAF and Rock Paper Shotgun. Plus whoever manages to have a stable stream at E3 time. Also constantly checking new releases on GoG and PSN.
Uh... just scroll past it. That's what I do with content I don't like.So what sites do you guys use? Any sites out there that just focus on games without bringing political nonsense into the mix?
Re: How do you guys get your gaming news?
I've mostly stuck to Kotaku (I did read Joystiq as well when they were around but they're gone), and mostly just ignore the political stuff. I suspect the Hulk Hogan thing is going to do them in though, at which point I probably won't care enough to look for alternatives. At this point I have a lot less time for gaming than I used to anyway.
I used to like Blue's News for PC gaming, but haven't kept up with them in a while. Apparently their site layout hasn't changed one bit in over fifteen years...

Re: How do you guys get your gaming news?
I use an app called feedly on my phone to get news from some sites, mostly Destructiod and Kotaku. Which is to say, I don't ever really visit the sites themselves anymore, just reading the feeds that seem interesting. I don't care much about the non-gaming articles on these sites, nor do understand the "stigma" of Kotaku - it's just one more source to get reviews and game news from.
Occasionally I lurk NeoGAF and a few other sites as well when I really want to follow something. (Off-topic but I love the yearly "show your gaming setup"-thread on there)
I've pretty much completely stopped reading physical game magazines, something I actually do miss a bit. I only buy the occasional issue of Retrogamer (pretty expensive here as it is an import) and sometimes a swedish magazine called LEVEL, which have a nice little retro-section in the back.
Oh, and some youtube stuff like Zero Punctuation, Jimquisition and sometimes Total Biscuit for what's going on in the modern gaming world.

I'd concur.soprano1 wrote:Eurogamer seems a good option.

Although EG only serves mostly mainstream stuff, Martin Robinson (and myself *cough cough*) endeavour to highlight news for the likes of Shenmue, Dariusburst and the occasional obscure Japanese release. Where it excels is review reliability due to probably the strongest code of ethics among net publications and abandoning of typical scoring scales; and feature writing, for which the likes of Christian Donlan and Simon Parkin have won awards. I've also done a few of those: Double Dragon, Final Fight, Slap Fight MD, Falcom and Ys, and some stuff about eastern gaming cultures to name a few - so it's not all FIFA and CoD.

Interesting reference. I took a look at it and article titles seem more professional than Siliconera's. Siliconera article titles weren't clickbaity before but these last few years, some oddly-worded headlines made their way indeed.Gespenst wrote:Gematsu is better than Siliconera. Oh yeah, I forgot but I do visit Eurogamer sometimes. I especially like the technical breakdowns and comparisons.Skykid wrote:I'd concur.soprano1 wrote:Eurogamer seems a good option.![]()

And I forgot them as well. For quite a period of time, I always went to Game Trailers to check their video reviews which I thought were fair and enjoyable.Immryr wrote:game trailers was my favourite of these kind of sites / channels. =[
