Need a HDTV Recomendation

Post by The_Atomik_Punk! »

Well, my 60' LG Plasma just gave up the ghost, so I'm in the market for an immediate replacement.

My parameters for this TV are:

- Under $2000 CDN
-Preferably 60', but willing to reduce screen size slightly for better quality
- TV will need to be a workhorse; primarily used for 12+ hours of cable news a day (think receptionists office)- no burn in required!
- Regular use for Netflix/ Blu Ray (i.e film) screenings
- Occasional use for 1080p gaming (PS3/Wii U)

I enjoyed the black levels of my Plasma (are they still being made?), so I'd like something that can deliver a great film screening experience, but ideally won't suffer from burn-in like my LG did from the 12+ hours of cable new a day. Currently I'm seeing 4K TVs being pushed a lot, but it seems like there's hardly any content that takes advantage of that resolution, even down the pipeline. My concern is whether upscaling of 1080p content to 4K would look bad, or add input lag to HD gaming.

Any good recommendations would be greatly appreciated; I'd like to pull the trigger on this purchase ASAP.

Like the kdl-50w829 (different numbers per region I think) not sure on price or 60 inch option. Good picture/colours and framrate conversions. Low input lag.

Not up on 4ks yet myself so no specific recommendations - imagine this could be very interesting if you have any adverts/apps/graphics that you could have tailored in 4k and shown on this screen...

In general:
Plasmas are no longer made AFAIK most lines ended in 2014. Similarly 4k screens are more and more common simply because that's the format a lot of large screen fabrication facilities are swapping to. A lot of the current 4k screens seem to suffer a bit more of input lag presumably due to bandwidth and a lack of time/development on the image processing side of things. Images look as good as most other tvs to be honest - though any thing 1080 which would have been native will likely be a touch softer. But anything contemporary on your ps3 was probably 720 upscaled to 1080 anyway ;)

Good HD gaming tvs currently hit in around 30ms lag. Good 4k screens seem to be around 45ms.

But really none of this matters for TV+movies and probably remains in the acceptable range for your regular assassins creed type of games - just not great for competitive/arcade types.

Sony X810C (2015) or X850D (2016) by far.

But coming from plasma you'll need time to adapt to the overall inferior quality and performance of LCD whatever the type and brand.

PS: sorry those are 4K but the older - better - Full-HD models from Sony have all been discontinued. Their current ones aren't much to talk about.
We have a Sony TV thread by the way: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... &start=660

It might be close to your max budget or over somewhat, but coming from plasma, I would at least entertain the possibility of a LG OLED. I think the older model 1080p 55" is now discounted and would be the spiritual successor for what you are used to: inky black levels superior to anything ever made, unlimited viewing angles and motion handling and refresh rates.
