New BVM-20F1U owner, have some questions on how to configure

Post by Koop »

I posted this over on NG, but you guys might be able to help better I think.

Hey guys,

I got a BVM-20F1U recently and I am absolutely loving it. I really want to start trying to set it up a bit more but I had some questions.

I bought this monitor from a dude who had already set it up. The colors and everything looked great, I believe he told me that he had already calibrated everything such as colors, brightness, etc and it certainly appears that way to me, looks fantastic imo.

1) When I was messing with the menu I did something that botched up the colors, they looked like crap. (I think I tried to do copy -> ch1 to ch1 and it did nothing (?), then the colors changed to what I assume was the default values)... When checking the color temp adj menu I saw the 'CH SET' option, which when selected look much better like it did before- would this be the original setting the previous owner had set?

2) Is there a way I can see how he set the color temp? Positioning? Brightness? etc? Is there values anywhere I can take note of? Right now if I go through the menu I can see what I believe he had set is on 'CH SET' (if the above answer is yes) under color temp, and I guess all the other configs maybe fall under 'control preset adj' which also has a 'CH SET' ... How can I see what he configured?

3) How can I copy one channel config to another? For example I'd like to copy everything like the color temp and picture position and such from channel 1 to channel 2. I see there is a 'Copy' in the main menu but I am scared shitless that I will overwrite the colors and positioning he had already setup for ch 1.

^ The main reason I want to do the above is because I have two cards in my BVM. One for RGB and the other one that can accept component. For my PS2 I'd like to setup another channel for the component input (which I believe I have figured out decently on Setup -> Input Configuration where I can change the slot # for what card I am using and the Format to component)

3) Can I set up multiple channels for RGB with different positioning? Some consoles are way off, such as my genesis which has a big black bar on the left side.

You can see these questions are really all about figuring out how I can preserve the colors, brightness, etc that the original dude set for me while trying to also set up other channels for other inputs and consoles. I've read through the manual but before I try to use the copy menu (again hah) I just wanted to ask before I potentially messed everything up.

Thanks for any help

^ Think you probably overwrote the settings with default OR never actually changed them... offhand looks like you can do everything you want except maybe 3. Read before fiddling :).

edit: behind a filter so can't dropbox, but this guy seems to have the service manual as well as operating manual:

I am hoping it was the 'didn't change them' part hah. I mean the colors absolutely did change (looked like crap), but I think it just set it back to the default settings, which I corrected by just putting it back to ch set.

I've read the manual a bit, but it's so just so massive lol

I see reading + pencil + paper notes in you future!
Oh and don't forget; all this fun fiddling this is why you paid for a bvm :P ... on the plus side when you've got it right it should be cracking - gl.

Yeah I hear you, I don't mind messing with it but before I dove into it I wanted to make sure I didn't accidentally blow away what was already setup. That was the main point of me asking all this stuff really.

3) Can I set up multiple channels for RGB with different positioning? Some consoles are way off, such as my genesis which has a big black bar on the left side.
you can basically create four geometry settings per input signal. To do so you're selecting a picture format (e.g. 4:3 overscan and adjust it to your liking, move on to 16:9 overscan for the next systems, 4:3 underscan after that and 16:9 underscan for your fourth source).

So in the menus I should see those four items?

4:3 overscan
16:9 overscan
4:3 underscan
16:9 underscan

And those are just templates I can use? IE it doesn't actually need to be 4:3 or 16:9?

Any idea where I actually find and set these in the menu? I understand if you don't know, maybe someone else does. Or I just have to RTFM.

you don't have to go through the menus: you have a 4:3/16:9 button and a under/overscan button on your control unit. This way you can access the four settings. And correct, just disregard their intended uses. You can adjust them to whatever you like. I used one to adjust the screen to 240p signals (PSX or NES) and another to adjust it to 224 line signals (MD or SNES).

Oh derp, I see what you're saying. I guess I will have to play around with it, I didn't realize those were totally different settings I could configure separately...

Now you specifically say though, geometry settings-- as in each of these I can position the screen how I like but the actual ch. set (for color temp and such) - how many of those can I have? Do I have to set each of these four guys to the same ch.set for color and stuff? if that makes sense? Maybe I only get one of those? I was kinda assuming each channel I go to could have different settings... How does going from ch1 to ch2 effect those four geometry settings ?

Man I've never felt more like a noob haha thanks for the help so far.

I'm still just so scared of losing the color temp settings and such the dude did. If I could have some safety net where I could backup what he did I wouldn't mind messing with it more but as things stand I really didn't want to much that up. I guess if I really wanted I could look for the BKM-12Y memory card the manual talks about?

it just saves (per channel) which of the the four profiles is selected.

everything still's there in the numbers. Just grab a digicam and make sure to take a photo of all the settings.

That's something I've had trouble finding in the menu actually, where are the actual color temp setting values? I was having trouble finding them or even where I would modify them.

A lot of my issue comes down to ignorance of the menu system I guess.

You dont need the specific Sony memory card, any 1mbit SRAM PCMCIA card will do, the Sony official ones are £££££££££
mine was £19 I

Good info in this thread, just wondering which button on the BKM unit is for under/overscan?

Fudoh, would also greatly appreciate any extra info you could give me on my own issues:

Where in the options do you adjust the size of underscan? I've got it figured out on my pvm-20md, but was never able to figure out how to change the underscan size on my bvm-20f1u.

I'll double check when I'm back at my monitor, but basically whichever mode you're in, when you go into the alignment menu it'll change that specific "underscan" geometry setting or whatnot.
