The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I guess I should have added Zelda to Bayonetta 2... but I have to wonder by the time it comes out if it will be exclusive to the Wii-U or it'll be brought out on their new hardware. Then I wonder if the new hardware will play Wii-U stuff.... and if I've waited this long...
There are other things if I had the system I'm sure I'd wind up buying but there isn't alot I'd buy the system for.
Still if there was a way to region free the system I'd be thrilled to have an excuse to ditch the Wii and replace it with a Wii U. Then put the Gamecube back out.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Also, Nintendo has a lot of cash in the bank, something like 10 billion dollars, and they are (again) profitable. Further, their attach rates are absolutely ridiculous. For instance, Mario Kart 8 has sold nearly as many copies as the original Super Mario Kart on SNES, despite there having been only 1 Wii U for every 4 SNES sold. They have no real reason to go third party. Besides, by controlling the entire eco system, they are able to make a lot more money since they are the platform holder. By publishing on PS4, they would have to give a big chunk of money to Sony, for instance. Also, as much as some people may dislike gimmicky hardware, there are benefits to it as well. Just look at Splatoon, which makes great use of the gamepad (if you haven't played it yet: no, the controls are not at all 'tacked-on').
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Well something is forcing them to get new hardware out quicker than I think they would have liked. I don't think under powered and an odd controller has worked out the best for them.

Nintendo makes money. Microsoft's Xbox division has been losing billions over the years. Nintendo is also in better financial shape than Sony, which has massive debt.Strider77 wrote:Well something is forcing them to get new hardware out quicker than I think they would have liked. There is not even a release date for the next Nintendo console yet. The average time between releases of Nintendo consoles is about 5 years. The Wii U is now in its fourth year. If you want to be alarmist about a console manufacturer, you should read up on Sony's financials (I recall news from 2014 that their debt is at 'junk' status, i.e. can't be bought by institutional investors), or MS, which has to subsidize their gaming division.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I'm not being an alarmist. I'm not a personal fan of it myself and am just saying so. Call of Duty makes bank and I don't care for that really either you know, but hey whatever, things go that way. I don't think Nintendo is on the verge of being forced to go third party.
Whatever they want to do, fine... it just seems the Wii U is their least successful console. Third party support is weak but that's nothing new. It seems at least it's the weakest ever for a Nintendo console (granted not saying much as far as third party support for the big N these days). There is not a lot coming out for it at 4 years old in comparison to their past and other consoles especially.
I think it would be nice if they just made a conventional console. That and also, it's within reason to think that it might work out better for them as far as getting more 3rd party support and system sales. I would imagine that their faithfuls would not turn their back on them for doing that (making a conventional system, controller and specs) and I think it might bring more buyers on board along with more developers... more money is more money and more games is more games.

Sony is a Japanese cumpany: all of them have been hemorrhaging money for ages.Bonus! wrote:If you want to be alarmist about a console manufacturer, you should read up on Sony's financials (I recall news from 2014 that their debt is at 'junk' status, i.e. can't be bought by institutional investors), or MS, which has to subsidize their gaming division.

That was the Playstation devision. Or the electronics part. Supposedly they make a fortunate in the finance sector - but I'm far from an expert on economics so take this with a grain of salt. I'm just parroting stuff I read on the internet here.
GP you should get a japanese console if you're a language purist on the level that you want to play to play stuff like Mario and Zelda in japanese.

I generally just try to by in the region where it was developed if possible. Also kinda allows me some nostalgia of my many moons spent there. It's an old habit that should die. I mean, it's not going to help me get laid so I shouldn't give a fuck.ryu wrote: GP you should get a japanese console if you're a language purist on the level that you want to play to play stuff like Mario and Zelda in japanese.

Playing games in english probably won't get you laid either. Just get a japanese console if that's what you prefer. I also regret having bought a western Wii U instead of a japanese one.

It's too late. The NX will have a controller shaped like a giant frisbee that you can throw around the room.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
It's possibly more significant than that - RIP Nintendo home consoles.Udderdude wrote:http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2 ... ear-report

Some rumor has it that the gaming system is-the controller (and vice versa).Udderdude wrote:The NX will have a controller shaped like a giant frisbee that you can throw around the room.
The urgency behind (the possible acceleration of) the NX release has little to do with the end-of-the-line for the Wii U but has more to do with the fact that 3DS sales are running out of steam by Nintendo's own projections. Ultimately that is the market that they want to convert to the 'NeXt generation' before they lose it entirely to smart devices (to which Sony has already conceded defeat to).

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Has it had a longer run than Dreamcast now?
For the first time since 1080° Avalanche, Nintendo seemed to be making games I could like for their console again (even though both still had voiced Mario in them). This couldn't last for long, could it?

ok ok ok
Now let me get this straight. I'm an old man and might have not gotten the memo.
Now, as I recall, they did not sell replacement controller pads, right? Because they were supposedly going to do a thing that would let you use multiple Wii Pads at a time because they knew customers would think you could use multiple pads at a time for multiplayer?
So, neither of those things ever came to be, right?

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I don't think that ever happened. It's still just one oversized touchpad controller per Wii U. The controller situation with the Wii U was always kind of a giant mess ..
Replacement controllers could be bought at almost half the cost of the console itself. You'd be better off just buying another Wii U and getting a pack-in game .. lol

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Don't think that works so smoothly anymore - IIRC if your previous "pack-in" was digital it would "stick" eternally to that console - not to the account that initialized it. I figured that is why the Nintendo Select Super Mario 3D World seemed relatively popular.Udderdude wrote:You'd be better off just buying another Wii U and getting a pack-in game .. lol
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Yeah. Early pack-ins like NintendoLand and NSMB-U were physical, but Nintendo (unfortunately) wisened up after that and most if not all pack-ins since have been digital downloads. Not only are they locked to the console, but they take up a huge chunk of that precious 32GB of internal storage, heh.HydrogLox wrote:Don't think that works so smoothly anymore - IIRC if your previous "pack-in" was digital it would "stick" eternally to that console - not to the account that initialized it. Damn, I guess I got lucky then. Oh well. All those digital copies and oversized controllers will be lost, like tears in rain. :3
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I feel like a fucking moron, having bought one a few months ago, but whatever. Xenoblade Chronicles X was worth it, and it's still worth it.

Nintendo is denying the report, for whatever that's worth.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Yeah, they say that now, but who knows when they'll say otherwise? Not the first time for them, or any game company for that matter.BulletMagnet wrote:Nintendo is denying the report, for whatever that's worth.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
After 100%ing DK: Tropical Freeze and New Super Mario Bros. U, I'm currently working on New Super Luigi U, and got the first star on my save file tonight (beaten bowser). There is still plenty left. It's a very good platformer, but probably too off-putting if you haven't gone through NSMB U first. In my opinion, despite having a reputation as being a very difficult game, the game is quite a bit easier than DK: Tropical Freeze. My assessment might change once I'm in Superstar Road, but I doubt it, considering that Luigi levels are rather short, while DK: TF has you go through some pretty lengthy levels, which means that you can't mess up for a much longer time in order to clear a level.

I'm starting Bayonetta 2; I bought it back at launch, but I ended up playing through the copy of Bayonetta 1 it came with and ended up shelving the sequel for later :p
I've also been playing a bit of Pokken since I picked that up recently.

The PS3 port was a mess compared to the X360 version, while the Wii U port is the definitive version (1080p at 60 fps).Obiwanshinobi wrote:Is the Wii U port of 1 better than the PS3 port?

The Wii U version of Bayonetta actually has slowdown in spots the 360 version doesn't (like the start of the plane chapter and during the final boss), actually.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
The Digital Foundry analysis does not mention that:Sir Ilpalazzo wrote:The Wii U version of Bayonetta actually has slowdown in spots the 360 version doesn't (like the start of the plane chapter and during the final boss), actually.
Anyway, the original question was about the PS3 vs Wii U, and that's a night and day difference, considering that the Wii U verison basicalluy runs at 60 fps throughout, while the PS3 struggles to maintain 30 fps.How does the Wii U stack up against Xbox 360 then? To put it simply: very favourably. In fact, while it's difficult to nail down a 1:1 comparison due to the game's chaotic nature, similar sequences actually suggest slightly faster overall performance on Wii U. Coupling a slightly higher frame-rate with the elimination of screen-tear results in a smoother experience overall. Frame-rate drops occur in all of the same situations as Xbox 360, but the bulk of the experience seems to maintain its 60fps target fairly well indeed.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Finished New Super Luigi U with a 5-star save file, without ever resorting to using Nabbit. It's a very good game. Difficulty-wise, I'd say that it is on average quite comparable to New Super Mario Bros. U. Luigi has elements in the levels that are more demanding, but the levels are shorter. By contrast, NSMBU had some rather brutal levels later in the game. On a side note, not a single level in either game took me as long to beat than some of the K-levels in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which remains my favorite 2d platformer on Wii U.

I wouldn't say that. I mean, it's a very good port. No comparison between it, and the PS3 version.Bonus! wrote:The PS3 port was a mess compared to the X360 version, while the Wii U port is the definitive version (1080p at 60 fps).Obiwanshinobi wrote:Is the Wii U port of 1 better than the PS3 port?
But I think the XBox version looks sharper. On the other hand, it has screen tearing.
