Anyone know where I can buy a new Japanese PS1 / PSone?
My Japanese launch PS1 (Dec '94) has died. It died a good death while playing some Raiden DX.
Anyone know where I can find a replacement?
I need a way to play my Toaplan Shooting Battle 20 years from now =)
Anyway, anyone know where I can find a new replacement, or I am I going to have to find a used eBay unit?
thanks

Are you sure it's not repairable?

Re: Anyone know where I can buy a new Japanese PS1 / PSone?
the piece that the game CD connects to actually broke off. The plastic was all brittle.
I was like WTF?
It was still connected to the game disc when I removed it. The Playstation itself still works, at least powers on. I glued the broken piece back on, but I have not tried to run a game yet.
Just doing a little reconnaissance to see if its still possible to find a new replacement.

Re: Anyone know where I can buy a new Japanese PS1 / PSone?
I'm a bit confused, find a *new* unit? They stopped making even the PSOne more than a decade ago. Maybe you could find a sealed new-in-box unit, but it'll cost many times more than a used unit. In North America, they seem to go for $250 CAD and up for sealed NIB. I see a sealed NIB Japanese unit for $640 CAD. The normal price for a North American unit is $60-80. So you're paying anywhere from 4x to 10x the price to get a new one.
Have you considered just buying a used North American unit and getting it modded?

Yeah I kinda figured that pricing was gonna be nutty.
Was just hoping there might be some place that had a bunch of old stock sitting around in a WHS.
Really wish I bought a backup or 2 back in the day like I've done with all of my other systems.
Just figured that using a PS2 w/BC would be fine for PS1 games, and using my old PS1 only when necessary with games that dont work on PS2.
looks like used ones are about $50 or under on eBay, so maybe I'll just get a couple of those.
thanks brotha.
EDIT:
Oh, and I havent really considered getting a modded US unit. Guess I should.
I dont know much about modding or that whole scene or were to even look tbqh.
I do have a couple US PSOne units still NIB that I got for $50 back in the day.

Installing a mod chip involves relatively small soldering, so if you're not experienced with soldering, it may be simplest to just find somebody who does them. There are a bunch of people who post in here who do various mod work professionally, maybe one of them is experienced with PS1 region mods.

thanks, I'll look into it =)
BTW, just tried out my 'broken' system after super-gluing that piece back on. Seem to work ok, played 20 mins of TSB and Strikers 1945 without any issues.
Hopefully it holds together till I can get a replacement.

Yeah, my PS1 broke in the same place, and I just glued it back together again.
Worked fine for years, but I'm having problems with it right now; at the very best, games will work with skipped music when upside down. Time to get some alcohol and/or Windex and a Q-tip, I suppose.

sorry your's broke too, but I'm glad to know that this is something that **can** happen in general and wasnt related to improper storage at my house.
I ordered a used PSone (J) of eBay too to have in case old reliable fails again.

This was my thought, you might even be able to get by with something from a cheap CD player even. But certainly the entire laser assembly is available online.mvsfan wrote:what is broken the cd spindle?

Not sure what the spindle is.mvsfan wrote:what is broken the cd spindle?

The piece that the CD clicks on to, that broke off when I removed my game.
I super glued it back on, seems to be holding ok (tho I only tried it for an about an hour since)
I also ordered a used (J) PSOne on eBay, should have that in a few days.
thanks for the help fellas.

You can also just harvest a CD laser assembly from a US ps1 and put it in your JP unit.

Depending on what kind of plastic it uses, acetone might be a better glue (actually it would melt the plastic and allow it to re-fuse). Messy and slightly dangerous, though.
