Wii HDMI converters

Post by GaijinPunch »

Want to play my original Wii on my TV, which only has HDMI input. Everything I see on Amazon says "auto upscale" which doesn't sit well with me. Any comments?

480i can get a little tricky, even with more expensive converters, but as long as yours games deliver 480p you'll be fine with this one.

Are you sure your TV does not have component video inputs? They're sometimes using a special connector that included a dongle when you got your TV, sometimes it looks like a 3.5mm jack.

Upscaling converters will typically (but not always) add lag. One option for you is the OSSC (Open Source Scan Converter). It's more intended to upscale 240p/480i to 480p, but it can also digitize 480p, and doesn't have lag (a few scanlines only). Bonus is that it will upscale any Wii games that are 480i-only.

I know that there are some non-upscaling analog to digital converters which generally don't add lag, but I can't name any of them off the top of my head.

The one I linked to above does not upscale. 480p in, 480p out.

Thanks -- I would need to find my Wii component cables which are... somewhere. :)
Do any Wii games only support 480i?

Pretty sure, yeah.

just a handful. The big majority supports 480p just fine.

I've only encountered 2 games which are impossible to play in (native) 480p, even with forcing it by a loader:
Madworld PAL: no video when forcing a different resolution, get NTSC instead
Twilight Princess PAL: SHOULD run in 480p without forcing, but actually runs in 480i only (fake 480p), get NTSC instead

I have one of those Wii2HDMI dongles and honestly it looks the same as component thru my Framemeister to me.

I don't have a Framemeister... might get one at some point but we're talking like 2 hours of gaming a week at this point. I seem to have grown up when I turned 40. :-/

Seems more like they kept the flicker filter on in progressive mode. Apprently it's possible to force it off with homebrew.

@Xan
Source (just out of intrest, never heard of it)?

According to a thread on gbatemp Scarface PAL should also be avoided, get NTSC instead.

The only thing is that neither Swiss nor Nintendont are compatible with Wii games. But I get the point.

I have a Wii2HDMI that doesn't do any upscaling. It just converts the component output to HDMI. Adds no lag and looks just as good as component.

Similar issue ... but in a wierd way this makes me more prone to want to make the best of it, and/or get the devices that let me play/display it the way I want rather than to work round it, make do, or find and compare alternatives... particularly if I reckon I'll probably want to play it again later, or face similar issues with other similar games/systems that I, say, just want to play on my living room tv without missus moaning about the mess I'm making when I leave it out, or the ugly crt on top of a flight case that suddenly appeared. If you ever have to unpack/pack that kind of shit it's a guaranteed roadblock to what could have been a good hour or so playing - which can honestly make a huge difference if you don't get much time otherwise.
