Could it possibly work with other GD-ROM-using systems (Triforce, Chihiro)? I saw a modded Dreamcast on sale reading SD cards, but thought this kind of memory is too slow to keep up with even pretty old optical drives.

Yes it works with those systems as well, but the raspberry pi is better solution along with a netdimm.
