Sound issues on Raiden DX US PCB....any idea if fixable?

Post by drunkninja24 »

Tried posting in some other threads, but it didn't quite get a lot of attention, but feel free to stick this in those threads if mods feel necessary. Just want to make sure this is seen.

Anyways...been having these sound issues with my Raiden DX PCB for a while now, but I'd really like to fix the issue (especially for if I ever want to have the board set up at some local places that may be interested in having it for a bit). I uploaded a vid here:

As you can see (and hear) everything on the game itself works just fine. But that awful squeal seems to start up if the PCB is left on for more than about an hour. It starts off quietly, then just gets worse and worse until eventually turns out like you hear in the vid. I wanna say it's just some faulty component (caps maybe?) but I don't wanna go poking around my board and replacing parts unnecessarily. I've inspected the board visually and can't find any obvious signs of wear. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Wanna try to preserve this as best I can, especially since this is the only way to play an English version of this game at the current time

A fairly common issue on these boards it seems. My Raiden II has (had) the same problem. The squeal originates from the OKI ADPCM sound chip. You can "fix" it by cutting one of the connections that hooks up the OKI to the final output, but then you lose the meatier explosions and drums from the music.

I'm sure someone better at these things knows a real solution though, so wait for that instead of mutilating your board :V

Someone needs to send me one doing this and I'll take a look at it with a scope. It might be the op-amp and not the OKI.

I'd gladly donate mine for inspection if it didn't cost an arm and a leg for me to get it to ya

I recently picked up a Raiden DX board that has the same sound issues shown in drunkninja24's youtube video. I want to love this game but that noise/squealing is just killing me. Any chance someone found a fix to this?

Offer is still open should anyone feel like posting one doing this to the UK for diagnosis.

Is it the same problem as these? That's what I'd like to go after, the loud whistling/screeching sound.

I ordered a new op-amp and caps, and hopefully replacing the old parts will fix the audio. If this doesn't work, then I'll have to track down some OKI M6295 which none of my usual suppliers have. Anyone know where I can get M6295? I need at least 2 of them.

Not so much whistling as constant low volume pink noise

Was this fixed? I get the squeal just as it's powered off, but the issue I'm concerned about is the background music freezing on one note. It seems to cycle back eventually, but I've heard some other oddities as well.

Never did actually get the issue fixed, and mine does do a short squeal as its turned off as well. It's still working fine in the 2+ years since I made this thread, so I'm not worried about it going out on me at this point, I just can't leave the game on for extended periods of time (like 1-2 hours+) without the squeal creeping up. Decided not to go with trap's "fix" since I didn't wanna mess with the board.
