Re: Movies you've just watched
Betty Blue Director's Cut is too-bloody-long for its own good (178 minutes, no less). For instance, the entire robbery job plot arc could be cut out and nobody would notice any gap, as is true about... most of the film, possibly?
Sure enough - same thing could be said about the version of Freddy Got Fingered I re-watched lately, but there it all seemed better sewn together.
One more thing - Betty Blue is another proof that off-screen narration opening the movie practically always bodes ill - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas remaining the only case where I didn't mind it one bit - BUT EVEN THERE IT WAS NOT IN THE FILM'S GODDAMNED FIRST MINUTE, or the first word we got to hear.
P.S. Okay - I am pleased that Dominique Pinon made it to the Director's Cut, and it's loaded with this kind of fanservice.

Enough of this depressing Trump talk. See the new Ghostbusters (sequel? rebbot?) trailer?
Remember that all the jokes that make the trailer are the best ones in the movie.

that's why I don't watch 'em if I'm already sold on a film. they will show you everything if it means you pull your wallet out.Mischief Maker wrote:Remember that all the jokes that make the trailer are the best ones in the movie.
I'm actually kind of interested in Ghostbusters, so I bailed on the trailer halfway. resisting the Civil War stuff has been more of a challenge, tho.

The new GB film looks awful... kinda reminds of the trainwreck that was Jimmy Fallon's attempt to remake Luc Besson's Taxi.
Anyhoo... I'm almost ashamed to say that last night I watched, only for the first time, John Woo's Hard Boiled. What a frickin' awesome film! Can't believe it's taken me 20 years to get round to see this

Hahaha, that Ghostbusters film. Wow, what a train wreck.
One of the things that kills me the most is how they rearranged the original theme so they could stick in it the same boring musical tropes used in almost every single trailer nowadays, namely, pretentious hipstery mininalistic piano notes followed by dubstep or similar. This are really dire times as far as creative media goes. All it is is just style over substance.

I recently watched Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II again. The first one was just okay, second one has an aimless plot and terrible pacing. And neither film is particularly funny. Gonna skip the reboot.

I almost made a thread yesterday about how bad the new Ghostbusters trailer looks.

Funny that it was one of movies i experienced in cinema for the first time in my life (before that - only tv and vhs).options wrote:Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: The Sword of Destiny
was kinda amped for this ...until I discovered it was in English and featured a half-caucasian chick as a main character. turned me right off. I was looking to get transported back into that mythical China of the first film, not get served some half-assed, appeal-to-the-Western-audience bs.
perhaps it ended up being decent, but I didn't stick around to find out. "Back to Browse."
Speaking of "asian", i love Bichunmo. I cried when i watched it

I went to check it out just now. Despite being ungodly bad, it's still not as bad as the Batman vs Superman trailer.GaijinPunch wrote:I almost made a thread yesterday about how bad the new Ghostbusters trailer looks.
What, the first one is great. Razor sharp script and assembly. I watched it recently and thought it had gotten better with age.CIT wrote:I recently watched Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II again. The second one is trash though.

Favorite line from the first was always:
"Guys, we got this all wrong. He's a sailor; he's in New York. We get this guy laid, we won't have any trouble!"
The first is just filled with blink-and-you-miss-them quips and zingers; it's great.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I watched the second one a ton since there was a period many moons ago when it was on tv a lot, but I never felt a particular affinity for the franchise, which is why the new one doesn't offend me as much as it probably should.

Ghostbusters' problem has always been that so many people take it seriously.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I never heard of anyone taking the series seriously. The first film was an oddball 80s comedy with a wacky premise and lots of funny quirks and quips, both in the characters and the dialogue. Sequel was pretty forgettable but that's how it usually goes.
Re: Movies you've just watched
The problem with GB2 is that nobody really wanted to do it at the time other than the studio, and then they butchered the script to make it look more like a live-action version of the Real Ghostbusters (which was still incredibly popular at that time).
People forget, the original film was written for an adult audience in much the same vein as Trading Places and Blues Brothers. The only difference was the language was toned down to avoid an R-Certificate, as the studio wanted to make sure they got their money back.
In the new film, the fact they are having to explain to the audience (according to the trailer at least) who is who in terms of skill sets shows the kind of moron they're hoping to attract to this pos. I don't recall the character roles of Egon, Peter and Ray having to be introduced and explained in the original.
Personally I hope the new film "burn(s) in hell".

After Hours - I wouldn't know how realistic those "New York" flicks are, but they do seem like produced by the city - urban organism rather than industry, by pretty humble means.
At the same time, this one's almost operatic (for lack of a better word) - the other night I listened to Scorsese introducing Johnny Guitar in a DVD bonus material and his film is framed analogously to certain scene of the former he talked about - all without trying too hard.

You mention Socrcese and New York, King of Comedy I would suggest to you, as far as being New Yorkish to the very core. Perfect movie!Obiwanshinobi wrote:After Hours - I wouldn't know how realistic those "New York" flicks are, but they do seem like produced by the city - urban organism rather than industry, by pretty humble means.

I have much tolerance to De Niro, even in hardly great movies, so I'll keep The King of Comedy title in mind, thanks!

Re: Movies you've just watched
Movie trailers really perplex me sometimes. Paddington and Shaun the Sheep's trailers focused on toliet humor. I haven't seen Paddington, but, from what I heard, it's better than the trailer would lead you to believe. Shaun the Sheep was a very clever movie that reminded me of some of the old school cartoons with very little talking, but the trailer was misleading (though I admit that one scene with the guy on the toilet was actually really funny).

That's so many layers of terrible... Normally the best lines are in the trailer. I mean, wow.
Fanmade one is definitely superior, but I would be very surprised if this new version of Ghostbusters surpassed the original.

I actually liked GB2 (though it has been awhile since I have last seen it), though it definitely doesn't hold a candle to the original. After seeing the trailer, I'm doubting the new one will even be as good as GB2.

There is an art to editing comedy, and most Youtube video posters suck big round balls at it. All of those "Best of" clips, and even single clips. If you don't cut it at the right moment the linger takes away from the humor.I think the secret of the fan trailer's superiority is cutting all the jokes short before the punchlines so they can't go "thud."

Ew, most movie trailers are pretty bad and feel forced to meet the movie distributor's demand. I suspect there simply are no professionals taking pride in making them, with an odd exception now and then.
Killing Zoe - I liked the frame derived from Frantic (jet lag in Paris) and the masterful low-key lighting.

A couple of recent ones:
The Martian: ***
Finally watched this one tonight, although I probably would have just passed on it if someone else hadn't picked it. That said, I did like it a bit more than I expected to. I suppose that the closest comparison I can think of would be Apollo 13 (I haven't watched Gravity yet, and doubt I will) and I think the latter was overall a better movie, but man, what a slog that one was to get through. This one wasn't quite as good overall, but seemed more watchable. I probably could have done without the self-surgery part though...
She-Devil: **1/2
A random film my wife picked off Hulu, it's a late Eighties film starring Roseanne Barr as a frumpy housewife with a hideous fake mole whose slimeball husband leaves her to have an affair with a romance novel author. She then spends the rest of the movie methodically destroying his life, piece by piece. Not bad for a random weekday movie, but Roseanne Barr is a bit of an acquired taste as an actor, and she seemed to playing a bit against type here.
