Famicom AV questions

Post by werk91 »

A friend sold me his second AV modded Famicom Hong Kong version quite cheaply and since I'm very new to this console I wanted to clairify a few things.

1. Jailbars..
They're quite bad overall. Seems some TV's handle it better than others. I guess a CRT will remove most of it.
Is this a badly implemented mod with poor shielding inside or just the norm ? Was hoping to wait out on the NESRGB mod but this picture quality is rubbing me the wrong way. Does anyone have an example screenshot of what amount of jailbars are normal for a AV modded unit? Maybe there's something I can do inside that doesn't involve complicated soldering in order to at least drastically decrease the problem :? I can upload a photo later today but Super Mario Bros has it quite bad on the blue background for example.

2. Power Supply
Finding a non OEM 10v power supply with negative tip isn't easy here. A lot of forums suggest that the Genesis/MegaDrive 1 psu works fine but those are 9v ? Will this one do the job ? Hoping to get one soon as I'm borrowing my friend's one currently

3. NESRGB mod
Installing this myself seems overwhelming and too risky. I can handle basic soldering like pins on a Scart cable but not sure about tiny solder points on pcb's. I'd risk screwing up a 2£ cable but not an old console. Anyone here based in the UK that mods Famicoms?

I can field this one! Got my HVC-001 Famicom NESRGB and stereo sound modded by Dave at http://oldskoolkonsoles.com. Can recommend his work wholeheartedly.

Thanks hosser! I will drop him an email for an estimate as I couldn't find any indication of the rough price on the website.

Jailbars
Jailbars again

Surely this is not normal ? I was looking forward to opening it and having a look inside but one of the screws is the infamous Nintendo don't touch inside security screw so until I get the screwdriver for it I'm stuck with some lovely lines :|

That's pretty typical with most original Famicoms, I've AV modded a few and they all had issues with jailbars. You can reduce them by adding copper tape shielding around the PPU (obviously you'll need to desolder the PPU to do this) and soldering a wire from the shielding to ground, but even then it won't completely eliminate them. The NESRGB is the only way I know of that'll totally get rid of them.

I was expecting to cut the video pin, add some capacitors and it magically all goes away.. Isn't it possible to slip a smaller piece of that tape under and cover the top as well? Soldering the ground should be no issue even for me.
The NESRGB modded ones do truly give out amazing picture but I'll try to reduce the jailbars first. Its an expensive mod and I still have to get an Everdrive N8 for it.
