At the time, you didn't have today's options, you had to hunt/import for the hidden gems on other systems, you couldn't get it all on one machine, and you couldn't get a lot of it at anywhere near a toy price point, and there was no way you'd get 4+ kids occupied with a single machine like the n64 did at the time.

Get a curved shadow mask consumer CRT with s-video by a brand name (I've seen Panasonic and Toshiba ones that don't have any convergence or geometry problems (less than even a pvm or bvm) whatsoever). Those handle composite and s video the best. They have fewer artifacts and more accurate colors.
