Is it sinful that I also like the boss designs in Sturmwind?
It is probably really hard to believe, but about an hour before you posted I began a post about Sturmwind's bosses and didn't post it. I might as well now -

Sturmwind has its weaknesses, but boss design is not one of them.

- The mechanical mantis in 1-3
- The Axelay walker in 1-4
- Verlon in 2-1
- Titan head in 3-2
- Giant Octopus
- Huge walker thing in 4-2

It's a beautiful game.

^I really ought to replay Sturmwind a bit just to remind myself of some of the bosses I'm forgetting.

Unfortunately I was quite disappointed in discovering that the final boss was a generic ball of doom, a fat frisbee, if you will. Then it turned into a tower of doom. Then it turned into a flower of doom. Then it turned a crystal-fairy-skull-thingy of doom. Holy crap, that was epic.
Hahaha, yeah, the transformations are pretty cool, if a little odd.

Much like the Earth was really hollow, the Mars was really haunted! :O

^IIRC, the crystal skull faerie thing is supposed to be a sorceress who was using the infinity chip to influence the Mars citizens to rebel against the Earth Federation, so that's not untrue.

On the other hand though, I'm pretty sure the Earth Federation just made that up for propaganda purposes.

THERE ARE WMD's ON MARS!

Also I realllllly miss my Dreamcast. I am seriously considering picking up a NTSC DC while my original is being fixed. The american replacement parts are not compatible *sad face*, so I need the part from overseas.

And I've kind of wanted a 2nd one anyways..

Always good to have a backup, considering the notorious laser issues.

Knowing how the Japanese handle story-telling, "government propaganda" is actually less believable than a crystal-fairy sorceress using magic mind-control on Martians.

I guess, but I prefer my shmup conspiracy theory :P

On topic: I really like how with some of the bosses in Zero Gunner 2, you can try to stick behind the boss (they usually move around the screen) to shoot it. Very fun strategy.

Finally went through R-Type Final's A and B routes.
While the end bosses aren't all that threatening once you figure them out, and it doesn't even take that long to do so, they both are really climactic.
They both use the Force mechanic excellently (it turning against me in F-B gave me goosebumps), and the Final beam fired at the Bydo Core was really satisfying. I would have preferred this one to be slightly longer, considerino you can enter the second phase in five seconds, but still, pretty cool.
Stage 5.0's boss is also fun, after having found safe spots, of course :P

Shienryu's final stage is another memorable one. The red dragon's melting is pretty epic, and the camera zooming out when the boss fires its gigantic laser really demonstrates what a mighty opponent you are facing.
