How many Dux games are there?

Post by NAVVARR »

I got an email a week or so ago - a new Dux 1.5 limited to only 100 + x copies - it arrived today and it seems that it's the same Dux 1.5 - in new packaging - but essentially the same game.

WTF ? How many times is this game going to be re-released?

I've bought every new Dreamcast game in recent years, but surely releasing Dux 1.5 again- is a step too far, I'm now feeling a tad exploited and ripped off.

Yes, its my fault, nobody made me buy them- but really, time for something new and fresh instead of endless re-releases.

Maybe it's a reprint due to high demand...?

Don't ask me who's demanding the game though.

That'll be me then I suppose

I'm more than happy to support any development of any new Dreamcast or indeed any retro shmup platform, but I've just had the p!$$ ripped right out of me over Dux 1.5.

Serious question: how? If you bought the game and don't intend to flip it, what does it matter if he reissues it?

One would hope the quality of the game would determine its value, but that ship sailed long ago.

Does anyone remember that guy who bought like 50 copies of the limited edition and couldn't flip like a single one? Maybe a different forum but it was hilarious.

you've been buying unofficial homebrew for obsolete hardware for years and you're only _now_ feeling exploited?

@ NAVVARR

I think the showcase is the new 13 track score isn't it?
Given Serraxor's remixed soundtrack - I see sense in Hucast re-issuing DUX 1.5 as a boxed-set.

May as well include the game & its original score.

This is out of my price range...
But, if Hucast ever issue a single disc jewel case of that remix? I'd snap their fucking hands off for one - no doubt.

You know what? If Hucast keeps doing re-releases and people keep buying them, then great.... what's wrong with making money if people are willing to hand it over?

I once bought an album by a musician that was absolutely, totally, forever limited to 1000 units, it sold out online in minutes, I was lucky to get a copy, a couple weeks later the print run was expanded to 5000 units because of overwhelming demand. Then a year later it was re-printed again due to overwhelming demand. Do I feel scammed? Absolutely not, a man's gotta eat... Frankly I was impressed that an musician doing a very niche-genre type of music was able to move that many units. Shmups too are niche. See the parallel? We should be happy a developer does well enough that they can do reprints.

A game is a game, if it's decent and someone worked hard to create it, they deserve to be paid, regardless of the hardware it was made for. Plenty of good home-brew games for the DC (Gunlord/Sturmwind/Fast Striker) that were worth the purchase. You're not being exploited if you're buying things you enjoy. The exploitation is something like Ghost Blade where modes were taken out without telling anyone after pre-orders were already locked in.

Is it your wont to accept theft and false advertising, with subjective tosh, or was that a once off?

Unfortunately the people behind Hucast have made a joke of themselves.
At this point I just feel sorry for the naïve, that's all.

except.

"649 backers pledged $53,121 to help bring this project to life."

evidently, people will blindly support anything "for Dreamcast" regardless of quality. devs get away with high priced physical prints (redux's regular version was 36 crumpets/50 burgers and that isn't even including shipping) because a moderate amount of physical copies sold at a high price still turns more of a profit than a small amount of digital copies sold at a low price. redux: dark matters is currently $3.99 with 8 other games nobody's ever heard of, in a bundle, making the game roughly 0.44 cents.

I quite happy to put out the money for any company willing to make a half decent Shmup for the Dreamcast- I remember how excited I was for 'Last Hope' - it was a turkey.

Didn't put me off though- even bought the NeoGeo CD version.

I think what is annoying me is their decision not to put Razion out on Dreamcast - due to high Piracy- but they'll punt Dux 1.1 1.2 1.5 etc etc for all its worth- doesn't quite add up - or maybe i've got the wrong end of the stick.

I'd love to see a new original Shmup on the Dreamcast - there evidently are plenty of folk who feel the same and are willing to buy their games.

Razion on the Dreamcast should be their next project.

Razion is a NGDEV game, not a Hucast game; that's your difference.

If there's one thing that all these Dreamcast homebrew releases have taught me, it's that I'm done buying homebrew games on platforms that cannot be patched.

Maybe just don't buy from hack-job devs instead.

This has been asked - of both NGDT & Hucast.
I've deleted & re-activated Twitter since then, but I found the reply.

There was a thread on DC Talk - just this week - regards your very question.
It also shares some further details on the forthcoming NGDT platform.

Well worth a read.
