I sent some MP3's over to BT today...

TWITCH: look for a CD-R in your mailbox.

FraGMarE: Has BT said anything to you about the tracks or if he got em?

Hotmail's acting like Hotmail right now, and my Vodka-mail? Forget it...

Guys, we're borderlining it...

We're ridin' that "edge".

TWITCH: PC Gunjin is coming along well, at least in the graphics department. Honestly, I've been drawing for Xymati here the past couple of weeks, just so I can get the basic pixel art out of the way (ships, weapons, etc). Bt recently had his laptop go down, which he uses to code PC-Engine games. He's gotten a new one since, but it is, of course, delaying any further progress until his new laptop is set up for PCE coding. It's no big deal, everything should turn out okay, though.

Nate: Yea, I asked him if he received them yesterday, and he said he did and he listened to them. He said he was also typing up a response to you, so you might already have his response by now.

Will Xymati use rendered sprites or traditional ones?...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

General question about the upcoming Super CD-Rom2 game that is Xymati:

Can the PCE Duo/Turbo Duo render CG "rendered" sprites without using an Arcade Card Duo upgrade but only using the 2.0 or 3.0 System Card?

And will Xymati use "rendered" sprites for the overall game presentation or be using the tradition "hand-drawn" time-honored overall look of the classic vertical & horizontal shmups on the PCE console?

Frag:
Yeah, but that one tune needs an overhaul. I'm getting to work on it next weekend. The DOC needs to throw down some jams on it as well...that goes for the other one...

Gimme a minute and I'll get it over to you!

The PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 can handle rendered sprites with no problems. The hardware sees no difference between a "rendered" sprite and one that was hand-drawn. The only difference is in how the sprites are created. Thing is, regardless of whether a sprite was drawn by hand in Photoshop, rendered from a 3D model made in 3D Studio, or fingerpainted by a 4 year old and scanned in as an image, the PC-Engine sees it all the same way. So as long as the final sprite is a valid PC-Engine sprite size that uses no more than 16 colors, it can be used by any PC-Engine game format (HuCard, CD-ROM2, Super CD-ROM2, or Arcade CD-ROM2).

The only thing that the Arcade CD-ROM2 gives you over the CD-ROM2 or Super CD-ROM2 is more RAM... a lot more... to the tune of 18 Mbits, with 8Mbit being directly accessible at any given time. This said, it is possible to create sprites with a TON of animation frames using the Arcade Card. By comparison the Super CD-ROM2 has 2Mbit of RAM, and the older CD-ROM2 has only .5Mbit. HuCards are a little different. HuCards run code and load graphics/sound directly from the card itself, so nothing except variables and dynamic code (which take up almost no space) are stored in RAM. This is why the PC-Engine only has 8KB of work RAM... it really doesn't need any more. Since a HuCard can be up to 8Mbit in size, this gives you up to 8Mbit of space (even more with the special 20Mbit HuCards like SF2:CE) to play with for graphics/sound data and game code.

Xymati will be using only hand-drawn pixel art for sprites and background tiles... at least if I have anything to do with it (which I do).

I have been wanting to make some pre-rendered sprites for TG16/PCE games and demos, but I am no good at making CG with programs :( . I have been trying to learn them though and I hope to get better at it, because I would love to use them for a couple of games. I have this idea for a cyberpunk, "early 90's concept of futuristic", rail-shooter game that would have pre-rendered sprites. However I have not written down any docs for this game, so no one expect this one to even be made ;) .
