Putting a LCD TV next to a Sony BVM - Speaker Magnets
Hi,
I've moved my 32" Samsung LCD next to my Sony BVM-20F1E, but concern over the speakers in the Samsung TV damaging the Sony CRT has made me move it back.
Can anyone tell me if it's safe for these two to live next to each other without fear of damage?
Cheers

It's safe.
Magnetic field emitted by speakers can only cause the colors in a crt to distort, and sony crt's come with a degaussing function to fix that issue.

These are just the typical low wattage built-in speakers, right? They shouldn't have a strong enough magnetic field to cause any problems.
On top of that, BVMs have some shielding that will help allay any problems like these. I wouldn't put any full size floor speakers next to a BVM but I wouldn't worry about cheap integrated speakers.

I have my full sized floor speaker right next to a CRT PC monitor. Is this bad ?Ed Oscuro wrote:..I wouldn't put any full size floor speakers next to a BVM but I wouldn't worry about cheap integrated speakers.

Yeah just normal low wattage speakers, checked the manual and it's says they are 10 watt....Ed Oscuro wrote:These are just the typical low wattage built-in speakers, right? They shouldn't have a strong enough magnetic field to cause any problems.

I didn't know how sensitive the BVM might be.... Seems like it'll be okay.

Re: Putting a LCD TV next to a Sony BVM - Speaker Magnets
I think it depends on if the speakers or monitor are shielded, I've seen magnet damage on a CRT.... I'm only guessing but I'd say if you've had them there for a good while and not seen anything going wrong on the monitor it'll be okay...werk91 wrote:I have my full sized floor speaker right next to a CRT PC monitor. You would notice significant magnetic interference on a CRT, areas of the screen go a bit 'psychedelic'...
I'm not sure if damage can build incrementally over time though, hopefully someone else will be able to tell you.

Since they're HiFi passive speakers I doubt they're magnetically shielded. I could be wrong. The CRT monitor itself hasn't shown any "psychedelic" interference so far
There's a degauss setting in the menu which I have only used once. If damage was potentially to occur over time is it reversible with degaussing or permanent ?

I think you would notice it right away. When I got my first BVM a few years ago I had i placed around 1.5m (5ft) from my subwoofer and this caused a pink decoloration. Took me a while to realize that the sub's magnetic field was this strong.

I have a sony wega that has a purple spot on it because of a magnet i hadnt realized was there. no amount of degaussing will make it go away.
Id be cautious about placing anything magnetic near a crt including speakers.

Try pulling the speaker away from the monitor when the monitor is on. If there's discoloration happening, it's too close.werk91 wrote:I have my full sized floor speaker right next to a CRT PC monitor. Is this bad ?
Have you tried a degaussing wand?mvsfan wrote:I have a sony wega that has a purple spot on it because of a magnet i hadnt realized was there. no amount of degaussing will make it go away.

So it's only discolouration that can happen ? My CRT has always had a slight misalignment that I could not fix with any of the geometry control settings. This is a picture of it and you can see it pretty well on the right side of the image that is almost tilted slightly :

Its very unnoticeable in gameplay but getting rid of it would be nice. Last time I spend too long on it got too frustrated and gave up.

a strong enough magnetic source can throw the wires in the aperature grill out of alignment.
theres no fixing that.
i think thats what happened to my tv.

Look into Speaker Shielding, My centre speaker has shielding so it can be placed near a CRT screen (my centre is old I think most older ones in the CRT period of home cinema TVs will be shielded)...werk91 wrote:
Damn! Using the 240p test suite on my MegaDrive I managed to see the problem better and with small adjustments to V Position and Rotate kind of managed to significantly reduce the issue. Wish I knew that before placing the monitor right next to my bookshelf speaker
Will this get any worse with time ? I don't have a better place for the speaker or CRT atm but I will consider doing something if I know that this is not the end of it..
I'm sure there will be some guides out there for shielding speakers...
I'm not 100% sure speakers will be the issue for alignments though (I mean things that can be corrected via Trapezoid, Pincushion controls etc...) I think these are solved by adding magnets, albeit to the rear yoke of the CRT on the inside... Not sure someone else might be able to help further....

The speakers are Sony SS-NX1 from 1999 and according to the internet they are magnetically shielded. Guess my misalignment is something else.. I tried the Trapezoid, Pincushion etc. controls but they're too complicated and I ended up making it worse in the end and having to recall factory settings

Re: Putting a LCD TV next to a Sony BVM - Speaker Magnets
I have Yamaha HS5 studio monitors on my desk close to my BVM and the interference forced me to move it to a position I'm not happy with. I have been considering what I can do to better shield the speakers and have stumbled upon a fancy material called MuMetal which is supposed to be good for shielding. Has anyone tried something like this? They sell sheets of this stuff made by 3M on Ebay.
