Anyone know a 4way shmup with good controls?

Post by nullpointer »

Hi All,

Can anyone point me towards a 4way (so multidirectional craft control) shmup with good controls? I cant find anything where you can move in all directions and fire in alldirections without either using a custom controller (ie 2 joysticks) or it feeling realy awkward. Im wondering if there arent any because its actually too many controls to handle (specifically on a keyboard). Or are there methods that allow you the same sort of control but with less buttons (like zerogunner for eg)?

p.s. If this should be in another topic, mods feel free to move it :)

Gunroar has a variety of control options. I think the mouse mode works well if you don't want to use dual sticks/two sets of keyboard keys.

Thanks for the tips, I tried gunroar and i think the mouse/keys control works nicely, but mainly due to the fact that even though you got 4 way movement you are on a forced vert scroll and generally keep the ship near the base. Ive though about using the same control setup, but it doesnt seem as easy to handle in true way space, or with walls to avoid etc. not played cannonspike, whats the mechanism there?

The jeep in Firepower 2000/Super SWIV for the SNES has what I think to be a great multi direction firing scheme.

Cannon Spike on the DC uses the stick to control movement and aiming direction with a button you can hold down for strafing... basically the same control scheme found in other 3d run & guns like Neo Contra and Expendable. It's OK when the number of bullets and enemies is fairly low, but I don't it would work at all in a more bullet heavy scenario.

I think the two stick setup is really the best option, but other possibilities depending on the game design would include asteroids-style with rotation and thrust keys, or a control scheme like the genesis port of forgotten worlds where you have keys to control rotation and the dpad for movement.

Out of curiosity, are you developing a game or just looking for a good multidirectional shooter?

Just to add my 2 cents, I love Cannon Spike. It was my favorite DC game for a long time, only recently being taken over by Trizeal.

How 'bout a Genesis/Megadrive sidescroller with some cool 360° fire? Bio-Hazard Battle is one of the coolest shmups ever made. You drag around a R-type like gun pod. And with a little flick on the controller, you can aim it in any direction (pic). There is one powerup that will only fire forward -- I always avoid those.

And if that just won't do, there's aways my favorite multi-directional shmup. Sinistar! It's part of "Midway Arcade Treasures 1" or you can play it on Shockwaves gaming site (link). I used to ride my mom's bicycle to the 7-11 across town to play this game. Almost got in a few fights in the parking lot too, but it was worth it to play that game.

Kiki Kaikai (the Acrade Version)
and also some old Outzone like Capcom games.

Time Pilot
This one is unque.

In the end is you must shoot in the direction you last moving to, if it got only one joystick.

***********************

But there is a few exceptions.

Guardian Force
You got a tank with a rotating turret.

plus some other games in which you got a button to lock the direction of fire in a certain direction.

I liked it until I played it long enough to realize there's no extra Continues to be had... which are freakin' necessary for that game...

As far as I can tell they're identical, though I've only played the NAOMI version a few times.

I still love Time Pilot '84. You might be able to find it on some Konami comp. Dumb title though, it has little to do with Time Pilot.

i heard when they were testing it, you had to rotate your character to move in a different direction (like resident evil style). was this fixed for the final release?
I have no sig whatsoever.
