Help with connecting 720p / 480i sources to Sony BVM

Post by zoopster »

Hi,

I'm a video conversion novice. I did some reading up and made some purchases. Basically I'm looking to connect a PS3 and Wii (720p / 480i) to a BVM-D24E1W1 monitor (RGB 240p). I've purchased the following equipment to help do the job:

- Extron Super Emotia (which was shipped without a power cable so it not much use)
- Extron VSC 700D
- Extron RGB 202xi
- XCM VGA Box

What are my options in connecting the PS3 / Wii to the BVM using the hardware I've got available and also what cables would be required to connect the consoles via component out to the BVM RGB BNC video card using the video hardware I have?

Thanks,
John

PS3/Wii -> component cable -> 3 RCA/BNC adapter plugs -> monitor

You need no extra equipment.

To clarify that, that's really a 480i monitor: 240p doesn't actually exist, it's just 480i with both sets of fields set to the same type so that they overlap... and both the Wii and PS3 support 480i output.

On top of that, the Wii supports 240p output for the virtual console with some tricks: http://retrorgb.com/wiivsclassic.html

Hi Fudoh,

Would that provide 240p output? My assumption was that the PS3 / Wii would be sending 480p or 480i over component. Also would the RCA / BNC adapter plugs be: "BNC Male to RCA Female"? Any particular brand or supplier you'd recommend?

Sounds like I might have some Extron equipment coming on ebay soon! :)

Thanks,
John

Hi Gupaz,

So when the BVM receives 240p from a Mega Drive or other 8 / 16 bit consoles does it up-scale the 240p to 480i automatically. At the moment I have an MSX 2, Megadrive and Xbox 1 connected to the BVM all via RGB SCART.

Thanks,
John

If you connect a PS3 or Wii directly to the BVM, you'll see the native formats. 240p, 480i and 480p from your Wii. Mostly 720p, maybe some 1080i from your PS3.

Classic systems like MD or SNES will show 240p on the BVM.

If you want to down convert HD content from your PS3 and scan convert 480i from your Wii to 240p, it gets A LOT more complicated. Do you want that ?

I'm looking to get a classic CRT look and feel for playing PS2 classics on the PS3 and older retro titles on the Wii. So I'm interested it doing that but of course it depends on the cost and the complexity.

Most of PS2 library wasn't 240p, but 480i instead. If you have a PAL PS3 you won't be able to choose that output. On a NTSC PS3 you could choose 480i directly for the component output, but since the PS2 run emulated anyway, it doesn't make sense to choose an interlaced format.

Unless you have titles you want to run specifically in 240p it's not worth trying to convert any PS2 classics on the PS3. Just rum them at 720p and be good with it.

If you think you got titles that are worth being run in 240p instead, let us know which titles you're thinking of.
and older retro titles on the Wii.
Wii's VC titles do support 240p/288p output for the most part anyway.

That makes sense and I just tested it out. I see what you mean about it not being worth the hassle.
