Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
I know many people hate reddit but I go for the lolz to be had on such boards as the r/NFL board, especially after Sunday.
So I tried to find if they had a shmups board and of course it's r/shmups. Cool let's see what the people there are talking about.
What do I stumble upon after 10 seconds but a topic called "when have you beaten a shmup?"
Followed by
"4CC? 3CC? 1CC?!?!?! When can you set the joysticks aside and say, "Damn, what an accomplishment. Time to move on."
Personally, I think of 3CCing a shmup as "beating" a game, 1CCing as "completing," and a one life run as mastering a shmup. But what is the general consensus of /r/shmups?
"
I immidiately thought of Bananamatic and noped the hell out of there. I know we've all been noobs at one point but why do shmups get stupid questions like that? I don't play hockey games for example and think to myself "wow, I finally won a game on super easy difficulty, better hang my gloves up now and retire I just mastered this shit."
Isn't the primary objective to get a potential record / strive for perfection ? A 1CC is mastering the game? Why bother giving you a score at all !
If nothing else this is just a warning for those who could potentially fall victim to visiting that place.

NFL board has surprisingly up to date news, no stupid meme crap, and video links that I've always loved. I go there for my nfl news more than I would some espn app or whatever. That's basically all i use it for but thought "hey shmups are niche enough maybe the board wouldn't be full of idiots". My mistake.trap15 wrote:Reddit is entirely shit, why are you surprised at all.

Re: Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
/r/shmups actually gets activity? Back when I frequented Reddit it got at most like one link or self-post per week. Stopped bothering to visit it after the mod started deleting everything so much as mentioning emulation. He even deleted a comment recommending Battle Traverse because he mistakenly thought it was an arcade game needing emulation to play on PC, which killed any confidence I had in his ability to keep it a place worth visiting.

Really makes me happy to see others on forums who haven't been brainwashed by the lowest common denominator reddit garbage. I don't know how people can stand to use that site for anything, it's main feature is basically complete acceptance of people who would be run out on a rail on any decent forum, and giving those people the power to control what everyone else sees. Truly a recipe for great discussionstrap15 wrote:Reddit is entirely shit, why are you surprised at all.

Re: Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
To be fair, the reason I visit it is for the NFL subreddit. Always up to date info on players and situations, news, videos, etc. The submitted stuff is always good and informative, not the crap ESPN wants to put out that only covers what they want to cover, followed by their opinions. The comments section however... full of morons.d0s wrote:Really makes me happy to see others on forums who haven't been brainwashed by the lowest common denominator reddit garbage. I use Reddit pretty often, although I avoid any of the main subs and just browse through a few that I like.

The majority of reddit is self-righteous circle jerking, and I usually avoid it, although I find the puzzle and dragons subreddit fairly useful, and there's a lunatic rave subredit with a very indepth set-up guide that I found useful.

Total crap - I wouldn't go that far!
/r/fatpeoplelove is a thing now?
[Deleted] wrote some shit and now I can't follow anything
Is /r/eddit ever better than Tyrone Magnus saying "TOP KEK" ?
tbh, /r/eddit has been good to me sometimes, like when choosing a monitor recently. Also the buildapcdeals sub looks pretty good. And that's...just one tiny corner of the thing. It's either comedy, or "no low effort posts" subs, or go home.
and me going "THAT DUDE LOOKS LIKE JEFF GOLDBLUM"
and finding Goldblum answers Reggie's question on Sensuality
But seriously, doesn't he look just like Goldblum?

The few I played when I was younger were generally checkpoint based stuff. In that case, there still felt some satisfaction in getting through the checkpoints even with continues. Especially if the game also had limited credits. the checkpoint recovery would definitely make it satisfying if you managed it and still made it feel somewhat like a victory.
Obviously I knew that you had really lost if you had to continue though, but I never really cared about 1cc until some people started uploading vids of Touhou to Youtube, then I tried the games out. The games pretty much give you a bad ending if you don't clear them with no continues and deny you some of the content(Extra stage) until you're able to do so.
But when I first tried them, I was thinking, I'm not touching those 3 easy difficulties(because most games are easy even on their harder modes), tried Lunatic, then realized I'd have to build up my skill on the lower difficulties(though I started on Normal instead of Easy). Even for a starting credit feed run nowadays, I would always do it on the highest difficulty if possible. I'd probably switch a bit between Hard/Lunatic if I went back to Touhou since I'd need to get used to the differences again.

I recently got modded to that place and found out a single mod was deleting half of the posts for no reason. I put together a post showing the evidence here.

Re: Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
Reddit doesn't understand SHMUPs or the mentality behind arcade games at all. It also refuses to learn. Pretty much any comment attempting to educate the Reddit masses on the value of the 1CC, or behind quarter munching and interesting challenge, ends up somewhere in the middle of a thread without any replies.
Okay, maybe they get fighting games. But that's about it. Believe me when I say I've looked. If you had enough people linking to a better-written version of "Arcade Culture" over the course of a year you might get somewhere, but what's the point?

Re: Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
You can't judge the whole reddit, it depends on each sub's community and mods. Some subs always were great, like Armored Core sub (ended up best ac place, maybe cause ac fansites died and discord is crazy), modular synthesizers sub, Osamu Sato sub, some specific subs related to photography, street fashion etc etc if you get my point

Re: Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
Reddit suffers from the beehive/mob mentality.
That's what happens when you put some kind of score such as karma on a social platform: everyone starts worrying about it because they think karma will tell other people how good/bad you are.
When this happens, everyone stops creating discussion and just follows the top poster/guy with more upvotes and is afraid to say otherwise.
This happens on forums as well, in some measure, where people get credibility by upping his post counter or by the joining date, but to a much lesser extent.
I never gave a damn about scores and whatnot and, just out of curiosity, I tried saying this in a thread and I was showered with downvotes. I think that was my most downvoted comment ever. No surprise there, but that speaks volume about how people care about their scores. Reddit is a rotten platform, good for memes and laughs and that's about it.
I still prefer forums over anything else (discord/facebook/etc...), but I'm an "old" guy, so what do I know...

Re: Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
Hmm, it seems they had a really bad mod that liked to remove perfectly good threads in there for years, even something like trailers for future games were removed, and since there isn't much content they have a really low number of people, it seems the mod went away though, and the new guys are allowing more people and threads while thinking of ways to bring people there?
It explains why there isn't much content at least, and why the more popular threads seem to be a generic "Recommend me some shumps!" thread and one asking people how...the genre could become more popular or ways to make more people try shumps?

Re: Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
Yep, that subreddit was hijacked by a gigantic shithead who apparently left reddit recently. Others noticed and have taken it over, trying to set things right. reddit is a bad website though, you really shouldn't use it.
Regarding all the 1CC stuff: you have to find a way to convince people that the 1CC is the most basic way of playing the game, and that continues were a scam. Why do you think the phrase "quarter muncher" shows up so much? If you can do that, you're golden.

Re: Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
Just wonder why someone would take out perfectly good topics for years, though.
I mean, Reddit isn't the greatest site in the world, but it usually isn't as bad as some people say, so having this really crappy moderator suprised me.
Still, i wonder if telling people to 1CC games is a good way to make people play more shumps?
I believe one should tell people that shumps are just fun, very fast paced, deeper than they look and awesome to play, and then casually introduce the idea of an 1CC by asking them if continuing all the time doesn't feel cheap or like cheating, i dunno, going too overboard and saying "YOU MUST PLAY TO COMPLETE THE GAMES WITHOUT SEEING THE CONTINUE SCREEN EVEN ONCE OR DYING!" can be a bit overboard for newbies or people who have mostly only seen some videos on Youtube and thought they were impressive but looked way too hard.
It just feels like the road to making people start 1CC'ing lies more about being calm with others.

Re: Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
It's weird that more people don't understand this. When you lose at Pac-Man or Donkey Kong, you are kicked back to the beginning. "What's the point of playing it, then?" And the obvious answer is to get better and to get further.Despatche wrote: Regarding all the 1CC stuff: you have to find a way to convince people that the 1CC is the most basic way of playing the game, and that continues were a scam. Why this near-universal arcade logic cannot also be applied to shmups is beyond me. No one would bat at eye at the suggestion that you would re-try 70s and 80s arcade games from the beginning, but apply that to a shmup and people think you're crazy.
I'm also starting to believe that focusing on a 1CC is a bit misguided. I think playing for score is more-or-less the proper way, because score gets you extends, adding survivability, which makes it easier to 1CC in the long run.
Re: Apparently Reddit has a shmups board
Are you describing the shmups reddit or this forum? We don't get too many recommendation threads (I think the mods take care of them when they do appear), but that latter question is an all-time favorite here and it shows up in some form or another every month or so. In fact, it seems to be so irresistible and perplexing a subject that this very thread has now turned into a discussion on the topic. Hell, you started getting into it, too. Not knocking you for it, I'm just saying it's not a surprise if the reddit kids also want to solve that timeless riddle.RiderKick wrote:It explains why there isn't much content at least, and why the more popular threads seem to be a generic "Recommend me some shumps!" thread and one asking people how...the genre could become more popular or ways to make more people try shumps?
I check in on that subreddit fairly often and I don't think it's so bad. It's mainly made up of complete newcomers who only know Ikaruga, Crimzon Clover, and now ZeroRanger, and that's about it, as well as guys trying to hawk their pathetic shmup demos, but that's not any worse than stuff like "why aren't there more shmups where you fly helicopters?"
Of course, there's also /shmupg, which is a great place to go for discussing your favorite RPGs.
