15khz PC output -> EXTRON RGB 302 -> PVM ?
15khz PC -> EXTRON RGB 302 -> PVM
Hi there. I'm hoping I can get some advice on the above setup.
Here's what I have:
PVM-14M4U
NVidia GeForce 8400GS soft15khz compatible according to this list. Is an edid dongle required? Is soft15khz the best software to use in this case?
Extron RGB 302. Can I use a cable like this to go from DB9 to HD15? I chose to go with the Extron rgb instead of a cable with the t-connector to combine sync. Good choice? Is this model appropriate?
I'm still learning about sync and have read there is a risk of damaging the monitor if the wrong kind is used. Is this correct?
Thanks in advance for you help.

That should all work together. Trouble with those Extron interfaces is that they have different pinouts, I think the early models had one standard and the later models another.

That looks like the standard Barco 9-pin RGB pinout. Should work out. I'm still wondering though why people opt to buy one of the old 9-pin interfaces, when there are dozens of models with proper HD15 inputs available.

In my case I didn't realize it was 9-pin, and I opted for a 130xi because it had H and V position adjustments.
On the topic of 9 pin rgb video, how many standards were there?
I know:
NEC
The one linked here (barco??, same as Commodore and Sony?)
IBM RGBi?

Yeah not many have both H and V adjustments and the 201/202s are often way cheaper than 203s on eBay.

The 201 has a proper HD15 input like the 203 - just without the 3:1 integrated switch. The whole numbering scheme is a bit off, but it's easy to check the particular models on the Extron page since they usually even still have the oldest models online.

Dak1, my extron 130xi has a 9 pin input that says analog/ecl like yours and it has the pin configuration you linked. I confirmed just this weekend.
Anyone know what ecl stands for?

emitter coupled logic - some kind of digital signal standard. I think it's related to digital EGA signals used on PCs back in the 80s.

Re: 15khz PC output -> EXTRON RGB 302 -> PVM ?
I liked the digital controls instead of the dials and dip switches used in other models, but I should have looked at it more carefully. I was unprepared for this DB9 issue. Still for $10 it's not too bad.
I'm curious about using ArcadeVGA instead of the older cards with soft15khz etc. What do you think?
Here are some manuals for Extron RGB boxes in case anyone is interested.
130xi, 134xi, 160xi, 164xi
201rxi
203rxi
302,304
580xi

Forget about the "soft15khz" or ArcadeVGA, and the Extron RGB. Get an old used ATI Radeon vídeo card like: 7000, 7200, 7500, 8500, 9000, 9100, 9200, 9250, 9500, 9550, 9600, 9700, 9800, X300, X550, X600, etc for cheap on ebay, an VGA to 5 BNC cable to connect it to your PVM, install "CRT_EmuDriver" and Groovymame for best results and there is no turning back, you will never want to play any other way around after that, unless you have all the PCBs you like
Now even works on Windows 7, so no more excuses for not try it out

Thanks for the info. I will definitely try CRT_EmuDriver. I was not looking forward to using Win XP and Soft15Khz.Overkill wrote:Forget about the "soft15khz" or ArcadeVGA, and the Extron RGB.
