Help me decide: PVM2950QM vs BVM-D24E1WE

Post by St4rwalker »

Hey Guys!

Need some help regarding my planned upgrade:

Current Setup is PVM2950QM tated with XBOX360 RGB Scart and mushi running in 480i..
Colors etc. is really impressive compared to my BIG fat Plasma plus i have it nice tated (quite
large vertical)..

Soo, anyways the flickering is killing me in the long run, getting older i guess

I have two options considered:

1.) Buying a Mimo Genius II plus the nessecary stuff cables etc for around 350,- EUR inkl. ship and taxes to get 240p on the tated PVM2950QM..

or

2.) Buying a low hour and in excellent condition, first owner, (aroud 10K) BVM-D24E1WE and tate that mofo, connected to XBOX360 VGA (480p) and add a SLG3000 for extra scanline fun.. This should cost me around 500,- EUR securely shipped plus i get BKM-10R remote control unit, BKM-14L light probe for monitor auto calibration, and some nice genuine SONY user and technical manuals

I tend to option 1, because my wife is killing me already hording that much CRT stuff..

do you guys think?

Best,

Honestly? You'd probably be totally fine with the 2950 but I would not hesitate at all to get the D24. Those things are seriously hard to find now and if you think you have a line on a nice one...go for it. This is coming from someone who has searched all day and night for CRTs for many years. Get one while you still can.

You mean fine as in "as it is right now"? or as in purchasing the Genius to get rid of this darn flickering?

@all: Anyone ever tated the BVM-D24E1WE? K-2 (if anyone know this youtuber..) used to choose a NEC XM29 plus tated plus
SLG3000.. Would this produce similar results? How do these 2 monitors are in comparison?

Curios of opinions from you knowledgable folks here :)

BTW, here is a Screenshot of this beast, does this look decent?

Looks pretty good imo. Solid convergence and the decreasing sharpness look very natural for a CRT, but it's difficult to judge from an underwhelming photo.

I'd pick the BVM as well.

It's always nice to have a BVM, but fake scanlines at 480p are going to look nothing like real scanlines at 240p. Just know that going in.

Better option would be to run your 360 through an Extron RGB with ADSP on to give a 240p-ish image.

Why? 240p is really 480i drawing both fields over top each other and leaving the other line blank... which is the same as drawing 480p and skipping every other line. As far as I can tell, they are literally the same thing. Differences in appearance would seem to be from how many TVL the display has.

If flickering (causing eyestrain / headaches) is the problem, you'd do best to stay away from CRTs entirely. All will have this to about the same degree.

Also keep in mind that the D24 will have no bigger a 4:3 (classic TV aspect ratio) area than any 20" set from Sony.

I agree with Ben about the fake scanlines. Having naturally drawn scanlines is a lot different from having a black line drawn inbetween the content lines. It should be sharper looking.

I have the 2950 and while it's a great set, it's scanlines aren't exactly it's strong suit. As for the flicker/480i I ended up running my 360 stuff to a 21" computer CRT monitor with an inline SLG.
