Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
My dog is a relatively rare breed, a Dutch Shepherd (mixed with retriever). When I learned what breed he was and did some reading up on their traits, especially their high energy levels and bottomless desire for work, I was able to adjust our routine to better suit the needs of his breed, and he became much calmer and happier as a result.jonny5 wrote:Breeding and training are 2 very different things. Blame shit owners, not breeds.
My dog's best friend is a Golden Retriever. Then there are some Golden Retrievers he isn't hostile towards, but doesn't want anything to do with. Then there's one Golden in the neighborhood my dog hates and I had to break up a brewing fight between them once. You definitely can't assume that all Goldens are sweethearts, it's a case by case judgment.
But there are three breeds of dogs where every single time he encountered one that wasn't a puppy, things turned ugly. Every. Single. Time: German Shepherds, Huskies, and Pit Bulls. Call me breedist if you want.
I really don't blame the dogs, I blame their owners for treating their battle-breed dog like a Paris Hilton accessory instead of the serious responsibility that it is.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Let me put that another way for you: Owners could always choose a breed of dog that's smarter or gentler, but stupid, reckless people choose pits. I say this with all deference to Cesar Milan - I don't take seriously any thought that a breed is "bad." But just look at wolves. They aren't suited for living with people.jonny5 wrote:Breeding and training are 2 very different things. If you train a dog for aggression, they will be aggressive. Breeding (aka artificial selection) is a real thing, jonny, else people wouldn't be getting pits. These dogs were bred for jaw strength and for not reacting to pain. It's pretty common to hear somebody whose pit acted badly that they had always been gentle and loving before. People get caught off-guard by their pits' behavior.
Sure, bad owners are probably the bigger problem, but the problem traits of pit bulls just make things worse.

I never blame the dogs either, but some dogs are basically Pokémon - born with certain traits. These traits can be prevented or buried but if they aren't well kept certain breeds are predispositioned to negative things. Again I don't blame the dogs though. If you own a pit bull and don't care for it and give it what it needs, you get what you get.Mischief Maker wrote:My dog is a relatively rare breed, a Dutch Shepherd (mixed with retriever). My cousin had an Australian sheepdog and that thing never got attention. Any family gatherings we had that damn dog would run circles around you trying to herd you into a circle like we were sheep.
Don't get the comment on German Shepards though, those dogs are some of the nicest and most loyal companions known to man. I'm assuming the negativity is because they are so loyal, bad owners turn them into bad dogs?

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I think German Shepherd are natural guard dogs and unfortunately do it rather actively (step too close to their turf and they're gonna bite you).
I've seen kids (including me) and eldery attacked by g. shepherd when I was young, in at least three different neighborhoods iirc, we also had one for years who was very aggressive with strangers, and we never ever neglected it nor trained it to be like that.
Also they're the typical police/narc/camp dogs, which doesn't help with their reputation.
Though maybe the breed has settled with time, the guard traits maybe have faded, other breeds have replaced them for that kind of job, they're more like average pets now.
PS: my parents currently own a Border Collie who naturally did the herd stuff when it was young, even biting the ankles when we were just on a walk and not staying grouped enough for its taste. And it never ever received any training nor seen a single sheep. ^^

Could we agree not use that "clever" trick of telling me what I already said: Training and breeding aren't the same thing, no shit? That might be why I were talking about breeding to begin with - let's stay focused for a moment.
It is worth mentioning that in the old days, pit bulls weren't the most common guard dog choice. I read that back in the '70s it was really common for dobermans to be used for roughly the same role, so fatal attacks on people were mostly by dobermans.
But all this is kind of ignoring a really important point: Some tiny dogs can be really aggressive and it won't matter much. A pit bull, on the other hand, will get something and shake it in its teeth, and that matters a lot.

These are actually really important points about breeding - lots of dogs have traits that are bad for modern domestic situations. People using the stupid "pit bulls aren't dangerous" line are using it as an excuse to pretend that they can somehow "train" dogs past this.Xyga wrote:PS: my parents currently own a Border Collie who naturally did the herd stuff when it was young, even biting the ankles when we were just on a walk and not staying grouped enough for its taste. I mean I never see someone walking a German Shepherd holding the leash with three fingers of their left hand while texting with their right hand. Maybe it's just my myopic viewpoint, but German Shepherd owners seem to understand there's a serious responsibility that comes with their four-legged buddy.Strikers1945guy wrote:Don't get the comment on German Shepards though, those dogs are some of the nicest and most loyal companions known to man. As for the encounters with my dog, that's the honest truth. The only German Shepherds that weren't immediately aggressive when meeting him were puppies. Now we just cross the street when I see one coming.
Maybe I'm misinterpreting you, but I do think you can train a pit bull to behave in a socially acceptable way, with the understanding that training is a daily routine. There are plenty of play substitutes to activities dogs are bred for, and never forget that plain old exercise is a great way to make sure your dog doesn't have gobs of excess energy ready to be channeled into unacceptable instincts.Ed Oscuro wrote:These are actually really important points about breeding - lots of dogs have traits that are bad for modern domestic situations. All dogs are a serious responsibility, the consequences are just worse when you're lazy with a battle breed dog.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Oh, fuck off Ed. Seriously, are you really going to compare those 2 completely separate conversations? One regarding a person killing and eating another person, a conscious human being, the other discussing dogs...DOGS, an animal... and how people choose to train them, or not train them. Yes, I have different views on 2 completely unrelated subjects. If you cannot make the distinction between these 2 things, there is no helping you. The difference between people and dogs is people need to be responsible for their actions, where animals, dogs in particular, are simply acting based on training and how they were raised.Ed Oscuro wrote:jonny5 on institutionalized ill people: BURN THEM ANYWAY
jonny5 on uncontrollable dogs: oh look at da cute puppiez
Your paraphrasing above is also pretty suspect.
institutionalized ill people = person who murdered and ATE another person and is now being let out a few short years later. I made it quite clear in that original exchange that I am not at all saying mentally ill people should all be killed, just those who have given proof that they cannot be trusted around other people, ie. cannibals who decapitate the person sitting next to them on the bus and eat them. I understand that you seem to put the rights of an individual to exist over the rights of those around them to be safe, which is fine. I just disagree with you.
I also made no comment on 'uncontrollable dogs' - I simply pointed out training is far more important to disposition and temperament than breeding. If a dog is violent or not safe around people or other dogs, guess what...I'm all for killing that dog too. I am not however all for painting an entire breed with the 'bad dog' brush because of some bad owners and media hype, which is exactlY what your comment was doing, to which I replied.
Seriously though, read my post on the last page and your comment I was responding to. Not at all what you are inferring as my opinion above, nor even the context I was replying in.
