Cheapest Great Saturn Games

Post by PowerofElsydeon »

I ve got my Sega Saturn very recently (early January)
I know this may be very off topic but can you make list about what Saturn Games cost less than 10 or 30 euros
I have preferences for shooters platformers side scroling action games and even wrinkly 3D games but I prefer the sprite based games the system is known for
But I m not into figthing games and multiplayer centered stuff since im a loner
I already have Nigths Into Dreams Panzer Dragoon Zwei Resident Evil Figthers Megamix and the Gradius Deluxe pack
Im Buying the action replay cart since I can t boot Gradius with it
Also if the game shares a ps1 version please compare price and quality if you don t mind

I voted for Shinobi and Astal, but I also liked Earthworm Jim and Clockwork Knight. Note: I haven't played any of these games since I was 12.

Assault Suit Leynos 2 might still be cheap?

Decent wrinkly 3D games that might still be cheap - Gungriffon and the Gundam Side Story games. Some nice mech action is always a good option!

Cheap is becoming increasingly relative these days with the increase in Saturn prices.

IMO these are titles that can be worth your time:

Dark Savior - not the best, and shows some signs of being unfinished/rushed, but probably one of the more enjoyable "RPGs" on the system. It's more of an action/puzzle/platformer with a wonky RPG battle system

GunGriffon -seconding this and its JPN-only sequel. Frantic mech action, fast-paced, and gives you a real sense of controlling a clunky, hard-to-maneuver machine.

Soviet Strike - Helicopter shooting game, part of the -Strike series (from the Genesis). Varied missions and fun/cheesy FMV cutscenes.

Magical Hoppers / Pandemonium - 2.5D platformer. Surprisingly fun level design, though it wears its Euro heart on its sleeve with collectibles and levels with many branching paths.

Deep Fear - Sega Saturn's answer to Resident Evil. Not as good as RE but can be found cheap and has some charm to it. Ridiculously easy, and not "great" (or perhaps even "good") by any stretch, but you might find it entertaining.

Here's my ultimate cheap-ass Saturn library, bitches. Eat it! Fuck!

Capcom Generation 2 (NTSCJ) Immortal classic Daimakaimura is the superb Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru's only real competition for violent sidescrolling action on the Saturn. Slightly better on PS1 (no inter-stage loading or occasional slowdown), but the SS port is more than acceptable.

Darius Gaiden + Galactic Attack (NTSCU) Not sure if the NTSCU versions still cost peanuts. If so, these solid Taito ports give the biggest STG bang per buck on the system bar-none. Arcade quality shooting at yard sale prices.

Sega Larry (NTSCU) Essential time attack racer. Smooth and subtly heavier handling makes it a great Black Label to M2's arcade-exact PS2 port.

Hundreds of hours of first-class hardcore gaming right thar.

*apologies if these have gotten pricier in recent years - thats life! NOBODY RIDES FOR FREE MOTHERFUCKER

I saw Loaded for Saturn cheap a year or two ago (unoptimised PAL, so in 60 Hz it's full screen & proper speed). Just the kind of game you might enjoy having payed little for (it's co-op for - I think - up to four too).

I found out that the megaman games are cheaper on the ps1 but the saturn is very superior since the sprite processing the system is known for drop dead gorgeous what would you chose if you re of average wealth?

The performance differences between the PS and SS Rockman games aren't very pronounced, AFAIK, and in Rockman X3's case the Saturn actually does worse (runs the game bordered, since it can't match the original game's SFC res like the PS1).

For a 2D game you're really better off playing on Saturn, see Tenchi wo Kurau II aka Warriors of Fate. PS1 version has jarring mid-level load times totally avoided on Saturn. Much rarer and costlier on Saturn though.

Regarding Shinobi X/Shinobi Legions/Shin Shinobi Den, it tends to be underrated. Mechanically it's a pretty decent sequel to the MD Super Shinobis, but loses out on style with its goofy sprites (I'm fine with digitising, it's the actual animations that look ridiculous). Assuming you can get it cheap, it's certainly the game on your poll I'd suggest. Silhouette Mirage is quality but suffers from stop/start pacing, and it's not cheap on Saturn.

I haven't gotten it yet, but the Saturn version of Puyo Puyo Sun is dirt cheap and a direct port of the arcade (I like the game on N64 and heard Saturn version is better). Puzzle Bobble 2/Bust A Move 2 is also cheap.

Not sure about differences between versions of Rayman, but the PC version is good and available from places like gog.com for cheap.

A bunch of Tomb Raider PC games were on sale for dirt cheap via steam and humble bundle recently, including Tomb Raider Anniversary. Original TR takes a lot of work to get it to run optimally and is a quickie console port. PS1 version has better textures, though it runs at a lower resolution.

MM8 has some exclusive bosses on Saturn (recreations of Wood Man & Cut Man) and an exclusive omake gallery/sound test, as well as a few new/different tunes that aren't ever acknowledged on the official OSTs.

Wouldn t it be cool to get the bootleg sampler (it s about 5 euros)
Demo discs like these have their charm when played on their hardware since they fell like geting back to the past
Plus these discs still retain their porpuse of getting us hyped to get the games

Rockman 8 (you don't wanna hear the Mega Man 8 voices) is a bit more feature-rich on Saturn (some extra bosses, animation frames etc.) and some of the music differs from the PSX version... but I like the PSX colours better (having seen both on RGB CRT). Found them more becoming the game's artistic direction.
2D multiplatform games not always must be technically superior on the Saturn, but hanging around here should teach anybody that soon enough.

I hear Rayman is a little better on the Saturn, but it's probably not too noticeable.

Having owned both Saturn and PS1 versions of MM8 and MMX4, I can safely say that in X4's case, they are virtually identical (the Saturn might have IMPERCEPTIBLY better backgrounds, but that's a stretch) and there is no reason to pay the extra cost other than collector's value (aka, no value). MM8 is a bit different, but the changes between the versions, once you count out the two cameo WoodMan/CutMan appearances) are ultimately negligible - the only real significant change is that in a few spots the Saturn version has a few more enemies than the PS1 version. In this case the far-cheaper MM8 on the PS1 is a better investment.

Define cheap. Also, are you comfortable with reading Japanese? Because that will make a lot of games much cheaper than buying their US/EU releases. Failing that, there's always piracy. Some of my favorite Saturn games:

NiGHTS Into Dreams: Awesome game with more depth than meets the eye. Quintessential mid-90's graphics at their finest.
Last Bronx: Sega's take on 3D weapons-based fighting set in the Tokyo I wish existed today.
Dragon Force 1 and 2: Neat SRPG's that can put around 200 sprites on screen at once.
Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2: The best 3D shooters of their time.
Vampire Savior: Capcom's most important fighting game of the late 90's has a perfect conversion on the Saturn.
Touge Spirits MAX: An interesting take on arcade racing from none other than Cave.
Saturn Bomberman: With a multitap this is arguably the best multiplayer Bomberman experience there is.

I can also second Darius Gaiden, Gungriffon and the Gundam Side Story games.

If you don't consiedr Omega Boost "their time" perhaps (it was technically more of Dreamcast's time alright, but then again - S&P was just around the corner). Heck, Quake on PC wasn't bad for the year 1996.

FPS are a different genre entirely. As far as third person, "on-rails" 3D shooters go, I would say they were definitively the best of their time.

(the Saturn might have IMPERCEPTIBLY better backgrounds, but that's a stretch)
Saturn version of Rockman X4 has heat wave effects for the far background of Sky Lagoon 2 and Magma Dragoon's stage. It's quite easy to see.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
