Capcom Classic collection for PS2/Xbox and PSP
Does anyone have the Capcom Collection for PS2/Xbox and what is your opinion on it? Most review said it was arcade perfect, is this true? I'm a little hesitent to get one b/c Capcom usually make half-ass arcade ports in the past. There're a lot of interesting games on this comp but the one that got me excited was the original Street Fighter, which by the way is rare and it only made one appearence on a home console on the Turbo-Graphx16 CD-Rom.
Others I like are 1943 kai,Ghouls and Ghost(arcade) and Legendary Wings. It would be really disappointing if they're not arcade perfect or close to it. One other thing, does anyone the line up that will be on the PSP version?
edit: nevermind, did a search and found the PSP line up.

Original SF? Rare maybe yes, but Super II Turbo has better gameplay.
As for the quality of the conversions, PSX/SS versions won't have scaled up (emulated looking) graphics like the ps2 ver, if graphics are a concern. Also, no TATE for the shooters. The lack of tate turned me off since my monitor is so small that no tate affects gameplay.

I'll be honetst. I was really excited about this collection at first. But when I bought it, I was kinda dissapointed. The selection of games is awesome, especially having the 1940 series, Ghost 'n Goblins, and Street Fighter games in it. Not too mention the classic Gunsmoke and Final Fight. As far as I'm concerned all the games are arcade perfect, or 98% arcade perfect
. But I just couldn't get into these games anymore. Sure it's fun to go back and relive your childhood, but they're damn difficult for me now. Especially the Ghost 'n Goblin games! In the end, I only played this collection for a few days until I lost interest. Now it sits comfortably on my shelf.

I still find these games fun I think if you like the games on it get it, the emulation is fine as far as I can see. Although I agree with J-manic this collection has some very hard games (Screw Ghost,s and Goblins) but there are some great shmups on here expecial Vulgus and Exed Eyes I recomend it
and still play it quet often.

No TATE? That sucks. I want to buy the PSP Remix version for Varth and 1941. Any word on if the PSP version will have TATE? It would feel awkward playing a vert scroller like Varth on a widescreen w/ no TATE. The sidebars would be ridiculous, no?Neon wrote:Original SF? I own the PS 2 version, and while the games are ports of ports (except a few) these games are extremely enjoyable to play on a bigger screen. The GnG trilogy still gets lots of playtime as well as good old Final Fight, I find enjoyment out of each title ( even Pirate Ship Higeramu ). 22 classics on a single DVD disc is like having a slice of heaven fall into your PS 2/ X-Box, these games brought me back to my teenage or childhood years.
Hope there's a second volume on the way from Capcom, no word either on Taito Legends 2 hitting U.S. shores, and if so a release date even.

The collection is pretty much the Capcom Generations 1-5 discs all in one. That is why Digital Eclipse was involved in making it.
The games are good. Nice huge sprites on the SF, and the other games have no-fun, cheap tactics to steal your quarters.
The xbox version is not Live aware, so that was dissapointing. I don't need high scores, but awareness is nice, especially this late in the xbox's life.
Pick it up for $20, for your fav platform, and you'll be pleased.

I just got the PS2 Capcom Classics comp and love it, it's a bargain for $19.99. Me and a co-worker are having a blast playing 1943 right now. No TATE but the TV is like 32 inches so it's workable as long as your TV isn't too small. Gonna play some Final Fight in a few. I am also highly anticipating the PSP rev for portable "perfect" Strider, 1941, and Varth alone. Hopefully it will at least be a reasonable 29.99 instead of $39 like most other PSP titles.

I'm really looking forward to Varth, too. I guess this means no TATE in the PSP version either? Kind of a shame, really.Dylan1CC wrote:I just got the PS2 Capcom Classics comp and love it, it's a bargain for $19.99. Me and a co-worker are having a blast playing 1943 right now. Obviously TATE aint too comfy on PSP but nice that it's there.
I still haven't played Varth or 1941, two shmups I have resisted playing in rom form until I either got to play the PCBs or play some sort of home rev. Just a pricey SGFX Hucard for 1941 and no home port for Varth so PSP wins until I purchase the PCBs.

Great news! I'll probably play them in horizontal mode mostly, but i want the TATE option so I can see what those games are -supposed- to look like.Dylan1CC wrote:Capcom's site says:dark penguin wrote:I'm really looking forward to Varth, too. I can't wait...this plus the Gradius collection( play-asia should be shipping mine in a few days) are really making me glad I caved and got a PSP

Thanks for the heads up!
You're welcome. Although of couse "way they're supposd to look" is subjective since the PSP is an entirely different resolution. As long as it is TATE it works for me though. I am just glad Capcom finally gave us a port of 1941 and am still surprised they chose Varth which AFAIK is NOT a well known game in the states.dark penguin wrote:Great news! Heh, well I should say ...I want to see them as close to the original arcade presentation as possible on the PSP. And if not for MAME, a lot of people would probably be wondering what the hell a "varth" was.. I know I personally never saw it in any North American arcade.
Can't wait though! I will definitely be picking this collection up.
Even without the Ghouls n' Ghosts games, there are quite a few quality titles in there.

Yeah, I seriously think someone in the Capcom staff who is an avid shooter (or maybe even MAME'er) fan was on board for the PSP comp. I'm thinking somebody in the staff was like "OK, um. Let's just put 1943 on the PSP comp too." New guy: "Uh, what about 1941 instead. The name of the comp is REMIXED after all?" Staffer: "Um, I guess we could..." New guy: "Darn right!" Staffer: "OK, well that just about does it for shooters..." New guy: "How about Varth, that is a good one and will add more variety." Staffer: "Um, I dunno, not many people in the U.S. know about Varth, they might get confused...." "Well they're gonna 'know about it' now and they're gonna like it!!! And they're gonna know about 3 Wonders too." Staffer: "What's 3 Wonders?"dark penguin wrote:Heh, well I should say ...I want to see them as close to the original arcade presentation as possible on the PSP. Don't forget Mega Man Meverick Hunter X and Megaman Powered (with 100 extra challenge levels, level editor mode which can be uploaded online) Also really looking forward to Daxter.

i'm really looking forward to this collection. i hope it'll turn out well. at the very least i think we can expect the horizontal games to make the transition unscathed, it's the tate that worries me.
i will also hopefully be placing my preorder for Gradius soon. i'm expecting Sengoku Cannon this coming week... now if only i had a PSP...

I have no sig whatsoever.
haha I know how that is, Ahar. Back in late '99 I snagged a sealed Radiant Silvergun off ebay for just $52. I didn't own a Saturn yet but I could not pass that up. I'm still amazed the auction didn't go through the roof and that the dealers didn't use a reserve. Bless their ignorance and/or decency.
edit: Oh yeah, then a few months after that I bought a sealed Souky from wolfgames for just $48, then I got my Saturn in February 2000 and that was one fun shooter night. Ah, nostalgia.

I got the PS2 version a while back:
Forgotton Worlds is absolutely incredible with the dual shock, very Robotonesque control set up. My favorite game on the disk.
I was looking forward to playing the GnB, GnG games after playing them on Genesis and SNES but they are impossibly hard. I remember being able to advance my guy after a lot of practice, but here, forget it. I am lucky I can get him a few feet before getting stuck behind a tall obsticle.
I like an occasional round of Street Fighter as a casual fan but something just doesnt feel right with them to me. I remember playing Street Figher on the SNES and 3DO and really being able to get a feel for it. Something just doesnt click for me.
Just a few gripes though, the collection is so well put together and polished, I wish Namco would study how to propery do a retro collection.

Another preview. Though some games are stretched (of course), others like 1941 will have proper TATE:

Another cool thing that really only applies on the PSP is the ability to turn the system sideways and shift the screen vertically in games like 1941. All games will feature multiple viewing options, like the option to stretch its 4:3 video to fit the PSP's widescreen display, but some of them have customized views. In the case of 1941, you still play with the D-Pad and face buttons as per usual, but the arrow keys are rotated to fit with the screen. It's pretty cool.

Jeremy Parish has a nice preview for CCR. Shmup wise, he doesn't even bother to mention 1941 but TATE is confirmed again. Also says that the games look very crisp on the PSP's screen and quality of titles selected overall is very good.

What this means to you is that CCCR is equally worthy of your attention, especially if you're interested in some of the less familiar titles in Capcom's catalogue. As someone who lived and breathed arcades in the early '90s, CCCR hits a sweet spot of nostalgia that few other collections have managed for me. It also delves into some fairly obscure games that are new even to me. The quality ranges from good to excellent, with only a small handful of misses.
Most impressive is how absolutely gorgeous the games look on PSP. Sony designed the system to push 3D, but the lush hand-drawn graphics that typified Capcom's early '90s output truly shine on the system's screen. There's enough detail to the visuals that the ghosting problems that plagued Namco Museum's '80s-vintage games are rarely seen. And Capcom has programmed an impressive array of display options into the collection, instantly tweaked with a quick press of the Select button. Those who hate wasted screen real estate can choose interpolated stretched or full-screen mode, while gamers who prefer crisp, pixel-perfect fidelity can choose original mode (which leaves a small border around the edges but reproduces the arcade visuals spot-on). The handful of vertical-format titles such as Avengers can also be rotated 90 degrees, TATE style. Granted, the PSP isn't really built for vertical gaming, but it's nice that the option is there.
