My PC shooter collection...

Post by MASTER SATAN »

These are mostly japanese shooters for the PC. I've been frequently ordering dojin shooters from import sites and now have quite a stout collection. Anyone know of some others i should get? I'd really like to have Rally Raid and Barrage Tribe if anyone knows where to get them.

I actually want to build me a little Windows machine for those types of games some day. What's top shelf in the world of doujin shooters?

I know I'd like to get Perfect Cherry Blossom, I think it's called. Saw some screens of that and it looked lovely.

Also, I have a G4 Powerbook. Would Virtual PC or somesuch run these games adequately if I wanted to buy one before I set up a windows box?

Thanks in advance.

any of the zun shmups are amazing (except for Phantasmagoria).

if i had a laptop, i'd play imperishable night all the time at school... and then i'd get arrested for making all the other students fall over unconscious in the hallways from amazement...

PaCrappa, probably the most graphically intensive one in my collection is Angeraze 2, which plays between 40-60fps depending on how complex the background scenery is or if there are any special grafx effects taking place (never slows down as a result of number of enemies). I have an 800mhz AMD Duron with 384mb ram and a 64mb GeForce 2 MX 400 running with Win XP. On some of the boss explosions it slows down to about 20fps. Valstar also features highly polished grafx and is also another favorite. So far every dojin shooter i've played runs great on my system. Probably none technically need more than about 500mhz i'd guess. Perfect Cherry Blossom is good but very small grafx. It's part of an ongoing series called SHRINE MAIDEN of which Phantasmagoria of Flower View just recently became an addition to (not as good as PCB). Actualy Imperishable Night is the best Shrine Maiden game (i have all the shrine maiden games available for windows with the others released for the PC98 japanese computer system only).

I loved Phantasmagoria of Flower View although saying that I am also a huge fan of the game is based from, Twinkle Star Sprites. Phantasmagoria was basicly nothing more than a more manic version of Twinkle Star Sprites but I feel that is a good thing after all it does cost considerably less than orignal game that it is based from and it's a brillant update of a classic neogeo shmup.

Saying that though I, like everybody else who has even come in to contact with this game, I.Night is an awesome game and my favourate of the Toho games closely follwed by Phantasmagoria and then Perfect Cherry Blossom.

Oh and good choice is Air Rade Air, that happens to be my favourate shmup on the PC closely followed by Warning Forever and then I.Night.

Sorry I will stop blabbering on now! :)

I really want to play that "The Reap" game that is reviewed in the Xenocide files. I believe it was made by Housemarque and I'm a big fan of their earlier titles (Stardust & Super Stardust). Does anyone know where I could find a copy?

HA! Dont waste your time on the REAP. I just bought it a couple weeks ago for $10 off ebay. It's windows 95 only! It looks breathtaking though on the back of the box and xenocide files says it's rockin. When the game loads it hard locks win XP until you can massage the desktop back with several random key combos like ctrl+alt+del or alt+f4 or alt+enter etc.

Now if you have win98 it might work. Of course it was designed for Win95. It came out in 1997. If only it had been released one year later it maybe would have been compatible with XP. maybe.

In retaliation for said bullshit, I ordered a recently released isometric dojin shooter from palet import shop (me and a friend have cleaned out hymlea shop!). I can't remember the name of it (a long japanese name) but it should filll that isometric shooter void that the Reap was intended for. Awe, one day I will install a FAT32 hardrive specifically for old games like that.

I'm still somewhat upset that Cloudphobia was never officially completed.

Also, Parsec 47 and Torus Troopers as well as Warning Forever rule.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I think I say this everytime a topic about PC shooters comes up: go play Stargoose. It's an older PC game (EGA graphics) but still looks pretty cool and has some nice ideas. The levels use a great amount of depth. You can sink into trenches and ravines to dodge bullets. It's great fun.

You can get it from Home of the Underdogs. They're address may be http://the-underdogs.org unless they've moved again - if that's the case, just google "Home of the Underdogs".

I don't think anyone recommended Bike Banditz here yet, so I'll toss that one out there, only real complaint I have about it is that it's a bit on the short side (I think someone in the Trading forum has a copy for sale). There are a pair of Cave "tribute" shmups (Blue Wish and Green Wind are their names, I think) which are fun; only problem is that they're only playable in "small screen."

I'll toss another recommendation for ZUN's stuff as well: Perfect Cherry Blossom is my personal favorite, with Imperishable Night in a close second. Great shmups, just make sure to read up on how they work on shrinemaiden.com, the scoring and whatnot can be a bit complicated.

Himeya Shop used to have a large selection of the new dojin shooters but they had a sale this past Nov/Dec and now their "shooting" section is down to only 5 games (from 30+) That's where I bought my copies of Impershiable Night/Perfect Cherry Blossom. They are very good about fulfilling requests as long as the title is still in print. Request Impershiable Night/Perfect Cherry Blossom and i'm sure they'll have it by the end of the week or sooner since those two games in particular are popular.

Off-hand, you're missing Hitogata Happa.

That, as well as the Shanghai Alice games, is available at http://www.paletweb.com .

Also keep an eye out for Shoot the Bullet; word is it'll be seeing in-store release soon.

while this isn't the full name, are you talking about Royal Edoma? anyway, i loved the trial as well. i could never find a eral copy of it though... which seems to be the story on many of Murasame/Plantine Dispositif's work.

edit: apparently, full title might be "Ouritsu Edoma Engine."

I recommend Kamui (granted, good luck trying to find the full version now), Rally Raid, Excess Fraction and Barrage Tribe.

I'm pretty sure that Vector Soft have the share-ware versions of both Excess Fraction and Rally Raid for D/L (you know, spend $12 to get a code to unlock the full game).

Royal edoma gets so damn hard on the later levels, dodging massive amounts of bullets in that isometric perspective can get pretty confusing...

So heres my picks:

Angeraze 2
Bike Banditz
Gohamaze no Arashi
GundeadLigne
Imperishable Night
Jet's & Gun's
La Soeur de Barrage
Kamui
End Effector version3
Hitogata Happa
Phantasmagoria of flower view
Suguri
QP Shooting
Angel Destroyer
Baroque Shooting
Rally Raid
Banshiryuu
Zen-Ichi
Shoot the Bullet
Lilian Fourhand
Tobi Tsukihime
NitroWars
Ama Kagura
Hishou Ayu

Damn, that list could go on and on...

Does anyone else remember Tyrian? It came with my Windows 95 computer, with the Acer company.

Tyrian was a really great game, I played it all the time. You could buy weapons and all that stuff from how high a score you got, not to mention that cool looking gore scene near the end. Good stuff for a 9 year old.

man i didn't think about mentioning Kamui *smacks head*

also, and i've said this all over, depending on your level of tolerance for hentai, theres Genocide Circuit 2, but the h-backgrounds can be turned off in the options menu.

the actual game is incredibly complex, difficult, and fun. the best description i can think of is "manic raizing."

depending on the kinds of shooters you enjoy, you might like it. :)

the only potential downfalls for others(in my eyes), are the EXTREME rigidity in actual play. the name of the game is destroy everything (using 3 weapons, which have to be powered up individually) to raise a meter which will change the background when full and raise all dropped medals in value. and all the while, manage rank, bomb usage, and boss milking. ^_^ grr, i love this stuff!

edit: if you want to know a little bit more about the gameplay, tar palantir and i had a decent strat thread going right here. as the game demands dedication, i haven't played it in a while.

Oh yes, played that game quite alot back in the days, go go carrot ship shooting bananas. Another old game I played then was raptor.

Oh and on topic, samidare might be a game to get as well. Feels a bit gigawingish though as you power up you weapon momentarily by sucking up shots with a shield. Quite a hard game.

galshell is pretty interesting, except for one thing. there should be two movement speeds. at the single speed the game offers, killing enemies and collecting their upgrade pods, and still making it to the other edge of the screen to take out another wave is impractically difficult. they fix this one thing, and i am all over it... oh and i want to see my hitbox as well.

I wanted to play this game, but the bullets all have their alpha masks screwed up and are surrounded by black. This makes dodging impossible as they bullets overlap each other and all I see is black everywhere.

I'll redownload it and see how it goes.

Who did the music for Galshell? Sounds alot like the Imperishable Night style of music.
