My assumption was that 480i outright wasn't supported by VGA, but I'll give it a shot. My display probably won't like it though- I plan later on to get a VGA to RCA cable and then feed it into an RGB to YPbPr converter to use for my CRT, but right now it's on an EDTV plasma.BuckoA51 wrote:Have you tried 480i too?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I have no problems with 480i on the two Panasonic plasmas and one HP monitor I tried. 576i is problematic though.Fudoh wrote:I have all three and I'm positive that they are all based on the exact same IC. I haven't noticed any horizontal shift out of the ordinary on any of them.
When you say it doesn't support PAL, what do you mean exactly ? 576i50 or 576p50 ? The problem with all of these is that interlaced isn't properly supported. I don't get a picture with any interlaced signal (50 or 60Hz) on my TV, but I can get a (jittery mess) on a VP.
Weird that you get no horizontal shift. Can it be PSU related?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Does anyone know about or have a wide-boy 64 agb? I was wondering if the issues the gamecube gameboy player has regarding the frequency (stutters resulting from agb’s 59.73 hz versus ntsc’s 59.94 hz) are the same with this device.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Those problems are resolved by using GBI on a display that supports 59.73Hz, such as a PVM. The WideBoy 64 is extremely rare and expensive, since it was a development device never sold the public, and it's much harder to find than a display that can support GBI ULL mode.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
well I just found out that both the "input" and the "throughtput" of each RGB channel can be used as an input. So with 2 RGB channels, this makes 4 RGB inputs. Pretty cool.
Don't know if PVMs and BVMs work that way or not.

They don't, the outputs are pure outputs that work even if the PVM power is unplugged.FinalBaton wrote:well I just found out that both the "input" and the "throughtput" of each RGB channel can be used as an input. So with 2 RGB channels, this makes 4 RGB inputs. Pretty cool.

Ah I see. The NEC's 2 ports under RGB channel 1 can function as either an ''Input & Throughput'' config, or an ''Input & Input(as long as the 2 aren't used at the same time, obviously. This can damage the monitor and should be avoided at all cost)'' config.Guspaz wrote:They don't, the outputs are pure outputs that work even if the PVM power is unplugged.FinalBaton wrote:well I just found out that both the "input" and the "throughtput" of each RGB channel can be used as an input. Same for RGB channel 2.
Obviously a lot of people have more than 4 sources to connect, or will need the throughput for a capture card, but it's still neat being able to plug 4 sources.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Would anyone know where to get replacement ribbon data cables for the Sega CD Model 1 Tray Loading? Seems both my ribbon cables have a few of the lines cut/pinched for some reason.
The system still works with a few quarks as in the CD Drive will eject randomly even when no buttons are pushed and it takes it awhile for it to see there's a disc in the drive. I'm hoping to recap the system along with my Genesis and 32x later this year along with adding a new drive belt and a new rechargeable battery, the laser seems to be fine so I don't think I'll replace it, however I'll buy one just in case for the future.
But yea I would like to replace the ribbon cables, I just don't know where to start

Is there a preferred supplier / type / brand of saturn controller to usb adapters?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
How's the Seimitsu LS-33 for shmupping ? Better or worse than a JLF ?
I'm about to mod a Namco Stick and feeling lazy, then I've read fitting an LS-58 or even LS-32 would be quite hard so I'll be limiting my purchase to the 'shorter' models that are supposed to fit without heavy modding.

Gonna share what i just learned : I just asked this over at Shoryuken and I got a glowing recommendation for the Raphnet adapterhoraceappleton wrote:Is there a preferred supplier / type / brand of saturn controller to usb adapters?

I've seen many people recommend the old Mayflash 3 in 1 but I've also seen some mention not so positive things about it. I personnally would try the Raphnet one based on the recommendations I got (haven't tried it myself though). I bought a legit saturn usb pad from Yahoo Auction Japan instead and am awaiting for it to arrive here. Some people say that the d-pad on those is not as great as a regular Saturn pad though, so I might buy the Raphnet adapter after all. We'll see.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
People say good things about the RaphNet adapters themselves, but also say bad things about the customer service. It's been nearly three weeks since I e-mailed him a (very simple yes/no) question without any response, so I've got to agree with that.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Doesn't the Blissbox support Saturn to USB? I'd go with that, it's known to be as lag-free as possible.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I may have a line on a warehouse worth of PVM 2530s and 2950s. Old stock from an A/V event company, so I know they saw some use, but is there any way to check hours on these models?
Same warehouse also has a couple Sony GDM-FW900s. I know these were the bees knees for a long while, but reading posts from the last couple years, I'm not sure how relevant they are now given the advances in LCD/LED monitors of the last couple years. Would they be worth picking up for PS2/Dreamcast/Xbox/Wii content? Thoughts?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
PVMs don't store hours counts. I wouldn't discount the FW900s; LCDs only will have the edge in weight and potentially being flicker free (though this is a downside as well), and adaptive sync if you need it. Pretty much any other metric you care to name would go to the CRT or be a non-issue. For HD content, a 24" 16:9 screen should have slightly more real estate (5%?), but the FW900 should have about 16% more space for 4:3 content. The FW900 seems able to support everything from 480p up to 1080p.
I'm fuzzy on getting the consoles to work on the FW900 so hopefully somebody will content who's used these. I don't think the FW900 will directly accept YPbPr component, even over the BNC connectors. I also have read that the PS3 doesn't output 1080p over component, so you might need a device like the HD Fury. It might be fun to try and get the VGA signal from the Dreamcast over the BNCs instead of dealing with the finicky and unreliable DE-15 (VGA) connector.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Will there be any difference if I run an emulator with emulated scanlines to my CRT PC monitor as opposed to using the Soft15Khz dongle and the Soft15Khz software to get scanlines ?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Since the monitor would only accept 31kHz+, the difference would be one displaying an image and the other not. You can trick it with a 240p/120Hz signal, though I didn't get amazing results doing so with my Trinitron monitor.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
What about a SLG-3000? Not that I'm against fake scan lines, more curious than anything..
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
When using an emulator and an LCD screen no external scanline device will give you better performance than using software scanlines in the emulator once properly configured.
All you can get on an LCD is fake scanlines, how they are generated is of no consequence.

Well, same thing applies to any 31khz display.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
"He" will do thanks. I didn't realise it works like that kamiboy. I was always of the impression that the CRT technology itself makes it possible as opposed to the refresh rate of the screen. I will play with some emulators and see where I get then. I don't feel good about trying a 240p 120Hz signal on the monitor nor do I have a clue as to how to achieve thatbobrocks95 wrote:S/He's talking about a PC CRT.kamiboy wrote:When using an emulator and an LCD screen no external scanline device will give you better performance than using software scanlines in the emulator once properly configured.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
My question is this. Why does Sega Genesis composite output look so terrible compared to SNES and NES? I was actually pretty happy with the composite input on my iScan HD, but the Genesis looked almost unplayably awful.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
The Genesis/Megadrive's composite quality vary with machine revisions and internal components such as the video output encoder.
Some awful, some quite clean. Check on sega-16 forums for details.
PS: why do you wire the MD in composite on your iScan anyway ? RGB will be quite superior.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I don't have the $60 right now to get the necessary cables for it. All in all it would cost over $100 to connect my SNES, SMS, and MD to the iScan, and that's without a SCART switch. More of a long-term plan for me.Xyga wrote:The Genesis/Megadrive's composite quality vary with machine revisions and internal components such as the video output encoder.

Cool, thanks for the response! I didn't think there was an hours count, but wanted to check to be sure. I'm still not really sold on the FW900s, especially having seen in person just how hulking they are. Curious if any owners have them and still find them relevant.Ed Oscuro wrote:PVMs don't store hours counts. If you're using a computer I'd say the FW900 or one of the LaCie Electron CRTs is as good as it gets.blackoak wrote:Cool, thanks for the response! Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I had to chance to test it with F-Zero Maximum Velocity on a LCD via XRGB. It seems to be either dropping or doubling frames (probably doubling, can be observed with flickering pseudo transparent layers like the map in the lower left corner. Doesn’t flicker clean with the LCD, will test with my BVM later.Guspaz wrote:Those problems are resolved by using GBI on a display that supports 59.73Hz, such as a PVM. Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
That’s Sony GDM is fantastic for DC and Wii/Wii U. Picture quality is on par with the BVM models from the 2000’s and up. But the advantages of the FW900 over the BVM has to be those deep black and whites. After calibration I’d five the FW900 the edge. I don’t have an Xbox and only recently picked up a PS2 so I can’t comment much of them. I do know when the GARO is released it will be a great pairing for the monitor since it will let you plug in component.blackoak wrote:I may have a line on a warehouse worth of PVM 2530s and 2950s. Currently I don't have a gaming pc so I haven't played any recent AAA pc games yet but I would imagine this monitor is still good for modern PC gaming. I have played some older games and they do look nice with this monitor. Nothing ground breaking but still nice in comparison to the last lcd that i had. Again I must highlight the smoothness, contrast, and colors.
There are just a couple of caveats. The calibration can take a lot of time and you will need to purchase some older hardware. You also have to let the monitor warm up for about 30 minutes. You can use the monitor during that time but the colors will be washed up. And finally you will have to calibrate it between 1-2 times a year for optimal performance.
