Composite vs. RGB comparison for PSX (SotN)

Post by Guspaz »

I took some comparison photos comparing composite video to RGB on my PSX (PSOne version). Sony PVM 14L2, RGC RGB cables, OEM composite cables. Geometry isn't calibrated quite the same between them. Taken handheld on an iPhone 6, so perspective was corrected in Photoshop.

I do have an S-Video cable too (turns out new-in-box OEM S-Video cables only cost $10 USD on Amazon, since it's the same cable for PS1/PS2/PS3), but due to big delays in shipping I already had the RGB cables by the time they arrived, so I've not bothered to try them. From what I've seen, the S-Video cables look much closer to RGB than composite, primarily in how they get rid of the horizontal blur that the PSX seems to have on composite.

Are you syncing on luma with your PS1?

Chroma data produces a lot of checkerboard artifacting across all PS1 revisions. Syncing on composite video often yields some nasty results in lighter solid colors.

The image looks quite nice though.

Yeah, sync on luma. Most of the flaws in the RGB images are more due to using a cellphone camera on a CRT in a dark room than anything else :) It looks quite a lot better in person, namely that the blacks aren't so crushed, and the bright stuff does't bloom like that.

Are you sure this isn't more low precision buffer work resulting in dithering? Which looks like a checkerboard pattern.
Tons of PS1 games have this as do many other games on varying systems.

No, it's chroma crosstalk. There's plenty of ghosting, too.

Where should I be looking to see what you're seeing? Are there any particular parts of those images where it's very evident?

He isn't syncing on composite video.
