Sony Trinitron KV-32FV310 Discoloration Issue

Post by unmaker »

Hi peeps new here.

Few months ago I picked up a KV-32FV310 for free on craigslist. Unfortunately these last couple of days an issue has emerged and I have no idea what's causing it.

As you can see in the picture there is this green discoloration. It starts at the top of the screen and slowly makes its way down, over and over again. I feel like it will need professional repair (which there are places not too far from me that claim to do CRT repairs).

I would hate to do away with it as I very much like this CRT, but I feel if it's too expensive to repair I will just do away with it and get a PVM. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To me just looking at that I would first think it's some form of magnetic interference, especially if you've started having that recently and if it wasn't there originally. Did you move something highly magnetic nearby? i think the massive size sets like the 32 inch might be more sensitive to these.

Otherwise component failure is a possibility I suppose. Hopefully it's not something irreplaceable on a board. Be sure to get a technician experienced with crt's, a lot of the younger technicians probably will end up advising you get a new set vs repairing it. Obviously a set of the FV300 / 310 series definitely warrants a repair even if it's pricey imo.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that's a possibility? The only things near it are my PC and speakers, but they're a good 4-5 feet away. I would find that strange though as they've been there for the past couple of months and it's only until the last couple of days that this started. I have not brought anything else nearby that could cause any kind of magnetic interference. Tomorrow I'll move the TV to another side of the room and see what happens.

I bought my 32FV-310 for $110, and I haven't seen a single 300/310 in a 2 hour radius in the 3 years since if that puts pricing into perspective for you. I haven't looked very hard though, and I just realized that apparently my google alerts don't really crawl Craigslist very often...

It looks like a purity issue, but odd that it just popped up. A degaussing coil might do the trick, but try turning it 90 degrees and seeing how the picture changes based on whether it's facing north/south or east/west.

Trinitron degaussing can fail if the degaussing circuit is stuck open; in this case, the posistor between the coil and power supply has probably failed and will need to be replaced. The degaussing coil will no longer operate with a de-magnetizing effect, and even the Earth's magnetic field itself can cause discoloration like this. This is almost certainly what has happened here.

You can try and demagnetize it yourself using an AC field by waving a soldering gun, power drill, or any other power tool in front of the screen. But if your TV isn't degaussing, the problem will return.

(Note that if fixing the degaussing doesn't work, this is likely a tube emission problem and will be much harder to fix.)

Hi guys I apologize for the late response. I was unable to move my TV until today when my brother came over to help. We moved it do another side of the room and the issue is gone! One thing I should have mentioned is that I live in an apartment complex, so I'm guessing my neighbor has something on his side that was causing the interference. I greatly appreciate the help and suggestions that you guys responded with!
