Speakers For Sony BVM-20F1U
I just got a Sony BVM-20F1U and was wondering what kind of speakers I should get for it. Will any speakers work? Are there any speakers in particular that anyone would recommend? And, sorry if I am a little naive here, but where on the monitor do I actually plug them in?

you don't. BVMs have no sound input and no sound output.but where on the monitor do I actually plug them in?

Oh. So is there a way to get sound from my NES, SNES and Genesis, or do I just have to play without sound when using them with the BVM?Fudoh wrote:you don't. BVMs have no sound input and no sound output.but where on the monitor do I actually plug them in?

If you're using RGB from your systems, I assume you're using a SCART to BNC breakout adapter. This adapter will likely provide RCA connects for audio as well. You can connect these to any active speaker system you like.

Oh, you're right. I haven't recieved the adapter yet, but it does indeed have RCA connects for audio. Sorry, I just had a brain lapse for a moment there, lol. Thanks for clearing that up for me!Fudoh wrote:If you're using RGB from your systems, I assume you're using a SCART to BNC breakout adapter. If you want some cheap speakers that sound good, I recommend Logitech Z200. They're PC speakers but hard to beat the sound quality for $20. I have all my systems hooked up to them via RCA to 3.5mm line-in.Ronin wrote:Oh, you're right. I haven't recieved the adapter yet, but it does indeed have RCA connects for audio. I know I shouldn't let it bother me.
But it really bothers me when people use built-in speakers after investing so much time and money into getting good video. It's kind of like going to see star wars in IMAX and making everybody stream the audio from the speakers on their cellphones.

The problem is, after building a retro gaming setup with a PVM and a wire shelf and all that jazz, I'm not actually sure where to put speakers. The built-in speaker, as limited as it is, doesn't have that problem.
Maybe something that would fit under the bottom shelf where the PVM is, which is a roughly 4.5" tall gap. Some sort of 2.1 system with satellites that are perhaps 4" tall and 5" wide, with some way of plugging headphones in. The problem is, a cursory look at sound systems shows that the only things of a size that might fit the bill are so cheap as to be surely terrible.

One of the many things I love about my PVM is that a hi-fi amp sits atop it perfectly

And potentially creates a distorting magnetic field...I'd never put a high powered amp on top of a thinly-shielded RGB monitor. It's good to know not everybody is having problems doing that, but some people have.

Just use the plug the RCA audio from your SCART to BNC adapter into an RCA to 3.5mm adapter, plug it into a subwoofer system, and plug in headphones to the output. That's how I do it. Video games are way better with headphones.Ronin wrote:I just got a Sony BVM-20F1U and was wondering what kind of speakers I should get for it. Will any speakers work? I actually still have a set of PVM speakers with the mounting brackets. I held onto them after getting rid of the last 3 PVMs I had. I still have two left though (two Sony PVM-20L5s).
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Oh right, thanks for that info. I've always been careful to keep speakers away from CRTs but didn't think to do same with amps.Ed Oscuro wrote:And potentially creates a distorting magnetic field...I'd never put a high powered amp on top of a thinly-shielded RGB monitor.
