Seriously though, it's like you can enjoy whatever abnormal stuff, including tearing human bodies into pieces (splatter films and such), but the moment you enjoy it with your dick, it's like you've definitely got to have mental issues beyond the fact that you enjoy something abnormal. I don't think anyone here is outraged at the character design and fanservice about them, it's a whole subgenre/trend in japanese game/animation, nothing new, nothing schocking. Nor do I think anyone here wants censorship about it.

Edit: to stay on topic, i think Deathsmiles is a great choice sells wise, the amount of weebs friends of mine not interested in Shmups but ready to buy it is quiet surprising.

It's not hated, just definitely not up there in terms of popularity and respect with the 'purest' of Cave bullet-hells, like DOJ or Ketsui.

Also it's hard to be horizontal and loved when you're a bullet hell game.

But Progear is so sublime.

The voicework was left in Japanese, but the onscreen text was given a translation that laid on several characters' regional accents so thick that it became something of a distraction; here are a pair of screens of Follett, one of Casper, and another of Rosa (Windia and Sakura were mostly spared the "cor blimey, guv'nor!" treatment). This video is of a Windia playthrough, but also has a bunch of the characters' endings starting about halfway through if you need a larger sample. Again, I recall hearing that the PAL version toned the accents down, but I haven't played it myself.

On a mostly-unrelated note, while sniffing out the above I discovered that someone made a freeware Deathsmiles minigame using Final Fantasy IV sprites. Learn something new every day!

I can see you're itching to discuss this. Let me help with the lolicon thing because, as is often the case with its supporters, there seems to be some confusion in getting past the trees.

I don't consider loli fetishists to have a sickness. I'm not oblivious to history or present day legal parameters that condone certain activities in the middle east. Some people want to bang grannies. In some cases people even rape grannies, and if those damn pop up ads in porno sites are anything to go by, there is a huge market for granny banging. I consider lolita fetishists to be simply the opposite end of the spectrum. Both are perversions of a different nature. The only salient difference is that if a guy bangs a granny with her consent, it's legal - but you can't get genuine consent from sexual relations with a child because there is no definable way of guaranteeing there hasn't been a level of coercion or corruption due to said child's immaturity, and therefore it's justifiably illegal.

What's very interesting about lolicon is how widespread it is and its prolificacy outside of Japan. It's literally fed upon by people from all over the world. If anything, that tells me that interest in the very young (as opposed to the very old) is actually less a sickness and more a fetish in line with all the other fetishes. It's commonplace. It's also commonplace for men to be attracted to youth in women because of genetic programming. I still think young girls are hot, they still turn my head, and if someone tells me "you're too old to look at an eighteen year old" I'd tell them to go fuck themselves, it's part of my biological makeup to be interested and its essentially involuntary.

What I don't like is when lolicon apologists exclaim that because it's fiction it makes them less detached from the fantasy. The fantasy hasn't changed, you're just engaging in a visual form of the same fetish that hasn't harmed anyone in the real world. Just found out about this. I was really hoping for SDOJ, as I have never owned a 360. I have never played deathsmiles beyond emulation for similar reason. But it just doesn't get me as hype like something such as SDOJ.... I'll still buy it, to see what all the hype for this loli stuff is.

I loved progear, one of my favourite hori's. Would love for the next release to be SDOJ or Akaikatana. But seeing from the pattern of these releases, cave plans to release their titles from oldest to newest. So most likely it will be either DP or DDP next.

But from all my time spent in nerdy Japan, I don't think that's the majority (or even a sizable percentage) of people interested in those types of products. The guys I see in the loli manga sections with a literal basket full of comics with drawings of kids covered in jizz aren't buying "Japan is so wacky!" stocking-stuffers. If you need further convincing, I encourage you to go to a sex shop in a nerdy shopping area.
