Desperately need help With Mame PC / Sony BVM / Groovymame.

Post by trydowave »

Hi. I recently got a Sony BVM 20E1E. Great monitor but god is it a pain to set up. I can get a proper image now but still don't know how to save presets. Anyway. An even more monumental task awaits...

Just slung together some old components to make an Emulation PC. Mainly Mame.

Hardware:
P4 4ghz
2gb ram
Radeon 9250 AGP
Vga to 5 BNC (2x cables joined to 1 for the sync)

Software:
Windows XP Pro SP3
Mame XT (I have GroovyMame but I don't know how to set it up yet)
CRT emulation drivers including Catalyst 6.5 beta drivers, switchres modes and the other bits VM, arcade osd etc.

I've been having so many problems trying to get this to work so im just goning to write down the ones I remember as key points:

SETTING UP THE PC
* Is there a good resolution to run XP on a Sony BVM without it making me go blind with CRT flicker? Im running at 640x480. On my old Acer laptop it had built in software to steady the picture when connected to an old style TV via s video. Does anything like this exist in the Radeon drivers? Lower res modes such as 240 have a steady picture but the icons are so big that I cant navigate.
* Does the 15 hz software actually do anything. My Radeon 9250 has a primary and secondary displays in the settings. I can install the 15hz mode into both. But. If I decide to or not it seems to makes no difference? How can the Sony run the display, with resolutions even up to 1024x768 without it?
* How can I stop the entire picture from moving across the screen? For example, in 640x480 theres a black border of about an inch on the right? Games in mame have parts of the picture cut off too. Can it be centred properly?

SETTING UP MAME
Using MameXT 1.65. Cant get the picture right: as seen here in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxGR2Wa ... e=youtu.be

* Using Direct Draw
* Sync to monitor refresh rate
* auto res
* unticked aspect ratio
* no filters or stretching of any kind.

* When I do this I get good results with Rastan, Full screen, but edges are cut off a bit. Slight stutter but im not sure if that's a vsync issue or my crappy pc?
* Street Fighter 2, no matter what I try its always squashed. The image is flawless but the aspect ratio settings don't adjust the picture? I cant work it out. SF2 has this strange resolution. 244 or something and the frame rate is 59. I imagine this is causing the slight stutter and the weird aspect ratio?

SETTING UP GROOVYMAME AND VM/OSD
*looking for a simple guide to set this up only with the other software elements such as switchres. I hear its the best way to play mame.

I'm sure there's more there that ive forgotten but if I remember ill update this post...

I could really use some help regarding this and id really, really appreciate it.

Thanks
Tony
