Master System games on Genesis: pausing with controller MOD

I have a Genesis model 2 with a Master System Converter 2 attached. I'd like to MOD the console somehow to enable me to pause Master System games with the pause button on the Genesis controllers.

Is such a modification possible? Have any of you done that before? Ideally I'd like a solution that was completely transparent, i.e. Without modifying the controllers themselves and without interfering with normal Genesis games.

I'm aware that some games do not work with Genesis controllers like Wonderboy in Monster Land but that's fine. Just wanted something for the other games that do.
