Street Fighter Alpha Anthology coming to PS2!

Post by VNAF Ace »

Street Fighter Alpha to PS2
More frenzied fighting from Capcom.
by Jeremy Dunham

January 24, 2006 -
Capcom has announced that it will be bringing its "other" Street Fighter series to the PlayStation 2 this summer. Known as Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, the brand new compilation pack collects Street Fighter Alpha, Alpha 2, Alpha 2 Gold, and Alpha 3 together in a single set. To sweeten the pot even further, the company has also included the PlayStation / Saturn hit Pocket Fighter under its more formal name -- Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix.

All five games in the collection will share the same three gameplay options: Arcade, Versus, and Survival, and it has been confirmed that the titles involved will all be direct arcade ports.

Check back for additional details as they become available.

Freakin awesome...I knew there was a reason I held off on that $50.00 sealed copy of SFA III for the DC. I have the PSX rev but the fact that pocket fighter is includes is one hell of a bonus for those who haven't played it.

Damn, I'm eventually have to get a good stick for the PS2. It seems I'll have to have one custom built (again...)

Sounds like only an american release. Any idea of a japanese release? Oh well, if this doesn't get a japanese release then can't get my hands on it.

Saturn version of Zero 3's better anyway. Money saved. :)

Yeah...come to think of it, let's wait and see how these ports are. I was starting to get excited about this, then recalled that every CPS2 game I've played looks and feels better on the Saturn. So this may be rather pointless unless you don't own the saturn ports (though at the prices SFZ3 is going for, maybe it isn't pointless!)

I think the chances of this release not being scaled are close to zero (and certain for any console other than ps2, xbox can't output lowres, and is anyone playing gamecube at this point? Don't think it can either at any rate). Zero 2 Dash will have all frames though, and there won't be any of the loads that make the Saturn conversion a chore to play.

Sounds great to finally have a perfect version of Z2A/A2G. And if A3 gets a perfect or close enough port, maybe its fanbase will finally get it accepted as a popular fighter. But if these are arcade ports and with no mention of Z3U, maybe Guile, T.Hawk, Dee Jay, and Fei Long won't be included? And I hope they just neglected to mention practice mode...

I dunno, I believe MMX Collection runs in low res, whereas the original MMAC didn't, so it seems possible. However it's all down to the porting team for this title. Probably with the funky resolution of CPS2 games it will end up scaled.

So does this mean there wont be things like, say, the World Tour mode for Alpha 3 since they're direct arcade ports?

Either way I'm sure I'll end up buying this, but it would be nice if the ports had all the fun stuff (never satisfied, I know).

The games are allegedly arcade ports and will be without any of the console only extras. (other than the confirmed Arcade, VS, and survival)

Then again, what type of arcade port has survival mode? Vampire Darkstalkers Collection was said to be arcade ports and it not only had all these modes but also featured every character crossover that the home versions had (except from Vampire Chronicle) and even an extra character, along with galleries. This compilation's game selection menu looks ripped off of Darkstalkers Collection so hopefully, Capcom will put the same effort into it.

I'm quite excited for this release. The moment Capcom announced a Darkstalkers compilation on PS2, I was already speculating on the Alpha follow up.

I'm quite content with my Saturn conversions. Hopefully, this won't dissapoint with zero load times.

I find it ironic that US never got a release of the former and perhaps this time, JPN will pass on this. No mention of a street fighter zero compilation. In any case, I hope that they finally allow you to choose among different backgrounds/stages on vs mode in SFA3.

Why 2 Dash would have all frames while the others wouldn't? Explain.

It's missing frames on the SS, it won't on the PS2. PS2 won't have the loads or sound problems either.

Disregarding any fanboyisms, from a rational perspective a well-done ps2 conversion should wipe the floor with the SS equivalents.

Not that it matters, Vampire Savior is better and deeper than these unbalanced pieces a shit.

Let's wait for a final release before making any concluding remarks, shall we? I still have some reservations to hold regarding this release which I feel will be marginally better than Capcom's past efforts on the Saturn.

Capcom is lazy don't expect perfectness. For instance, MMX4 in the megaman X collection. All Capcom had to do was copy MMX4 into a PS2 disk but somehow they managed to let a bug happen. In the Collection, Slash Beast will sometimes do nothing but stand there and roar.

If Alpha 3 doesn't have World Tour mode I will cry.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I was playing SFZ2' the other night, which only re-affirmed my thinking that it > SFA3.

Easily has some of the best backgrounds of any fighter, and the music is classic...I know most people love Ken's stage (with the party on a yacht), but I think Guy's stage is the best. Haggar holding Two P. in a neckhold and looking on at the fight with excitement makes me laugh a girlish giggle at least once.

It may not be as technical as SFA, but aesthetically it's the best.

I really like Birdie's stage... it's just hilarious, I dunno. Gen's is cool too.

Yeah I love Gen's stage and music in SFA2 as well, far better than his SFA3 version.

I don't like most of the tunes in SFA3, though I do think Karin's theme is cool.

Just out of curiosity, which version do you have? I've never seen or heard of this happening in the GC version...

I also like SFA2's music much better than SFA3's. I actually like the GBA SFA3's music better than the arcade/PSX/DC versions becuase I think it sounds less chessy in midi form. Still nowhere near the Arcade/PSX/Saturn SFA2's music, though. The SNES SFA2's music stinks.

I love Sakura's theme music in SFA2. I was very annoyed to find that it was changed to something of inferior quality for SFA3. I love the Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo has a vocalized version of the better Sakura theme.

Reports indicate this has tons of new modes and is all around generally badass and worth picking up even if you have the Saturn versions. Not the biggest alpha fan but I'll check it out now for sure.
