Fighting Game Hype Thread
Re: Fighting Game Hype Thread
Been watching capcom cup. I agree that Infiltration has a good chance to take it. I would like to see Daigo Vs. Wong, or Infiltration in the finals, but i don't know if Wong and Daigo can make it to the finals. So many killers in this tournament

I'm not a Marvel 2 Player but Marvel has to be one of the most entertaining Fighters to watch ever.
When I think best moments I think of the EVO 2010 Top 8 match with Sanford Kelly and Clockwork

I streamed it live when I saw it and wow it was soo fun to watch all the intensity. Clockwork really made the match fun with his Strider Sent and Doom.
I really wish I could find a better vdieo of this match as it is my favorite match ever in fighting game history
My 2nd most favorite moment has to be EVO 2013 KOF XIII Grand Finals between San Woo and Reynald.
Reynald getting those clutch wins were amazing! The commentators also made watching this match Super Entertaining... love HellPockets lol

I'm sure there are other great moments for me but those two were the ones that stood out the most.
I also enjoy watching a lot of Smash Melee and Smash 4 Vieos... PM as well

Space Jeesurs (Jesus)As for SF5, Fang looks stupid. Who the fuck let that happen?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

That would be ideal, as the game is rather unplayable in versus otherwise. A rebalance would be necessary too, there are several nearly worthless characters. I don't know if SNKP will do such things though, The Last Blade has never been a popular series.
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
The new sfv character looks like a combination of lei lei from dark stalkers and a thin man from xcom. Very weird.

More hyped for Under Night, actually.
Despite some silly character balance, it's probably one of the most unique and fun new fighters made in a long time (except Skullgirls, nothing beats Skullgirls. Go play Skullgirls). Feels more like a classic, Super Turbo/KOF style fighter with its emphasis on ground based manuevering and footsies, but with some air-dashy tricks thrown in (just much more unsafe then they usually are in modern fighters).

Oh, wow. For a long time, Guilty Gear has been one of my favourite fighter series (and by extension BlazBlue was ok too), but I've been out of it for a good while because I didn't want to dump a grand amount of money for the few consoles that had those and potentially required you to pay even more for online multiplayer. And even more for the inevitable updates on new discs.

I like Under Night in Birtth system-wise, but it has serious character design related gameplay problems. Basically how the best characters are super-long ranged fighters that can zone and at the same time do huge amounts of damage from far away, which goes against all fighting game logic.
This makes most short ranged characters (Akatsuki
) quite useless. If they manage to somehow solve this problem UNIB could be among my favorites.

Yup the balance is complete shit. Still pretty fun if no-one picks those 3 characters or their soft banned, though.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
The whole point of UNIB is to be a 2D fighter that actually utilizes the wider variety of ranges offered by the widescreen format. I agree that purely from a balance perspective the game is far from ideal, but the idea behind the game is sound and it's something that nobody else (not even ArcSys) has really bothered to explore yet.Hagane wrote:I like Under Night in Birtth system-wise, but it has serious character design related gameplay problems. If anything, I would like to see the game implement staggers so that full screen conversions lead to more than just combos. I think that would solve the balance issue in and of itself, and would make the game more interesting for sure.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
There's a lot of weird things going on with the top 3 characters. Some moves just feel too safe/high prioirty for how fast/far reaching they are. The grappler guy has an infinite that gets scaled to nothing but can be used to time out with the life lead too. Stretchy Dhalism guys are nothing new, but there's a lot of spots beyond the general mechanics that makes those 3 dudes in UNIEL feel questionable at best.
Oh well, at least we got this super out of the bargain.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I think you're applying the wrong mindset here: top 3 aren't too safe/reliable, everyone else is too risky/unreliable.
Ideally, the game would be played almost entirely at range. Don't be surprised if the next Under Night takes things in this direction.

Depending on what you mean, I don't like this idea.quash wrote:Ideally, the game would be played almost entirely at range. Don't be surprised if the next Under Night takes things in this direction.
Like I said, the main thing I like about Under Night is that it focuses on the ground game more then other air dashers: jumping, air dashing, and other acrobatic manuevers are still useful but a lot slower and less safe. The game seems to me to be much more focused on a ground based, fast paced, traditional footsies oriented game of neutral/mid-range spacing. I think that's the most unique twist the game has on the air-dashy, combo crazy sub-genre of fighters, and I'd much rather the game was balanced around that (which it is, if you remove those 3 assholes from the equation) instead of a game of Touhou Fightan where everyone is sticking safe-instant-high priority noodles all over the screen.
I'd go so far to say that personally, those 3 characters at a complete right angle to what I find interesting and unique about the game. They'd be better off in a game like Marvel where "fill the screen with shit" is a legit and intelligent part of the spacing game (well, in marvel 2 at least).

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I wouldn't say it's more focused on ground game as much as it's focused on making your ground game specifically at long range more useful than in other games.
I don't think they want to keep the current overall strength of the top tier characters' poking game, but I do think they want to keep the game working at that kind of range. Think Melty Blood, but on the ground. And when you make a good read, instead of always converting into a fat combo, you'll just gain enough frame advantage to mount an offensive and either force a mixup or play a closer range poking game.

Actually just talked to someone a minute ago, and apparently the top trio got significantly nerfed in UNIEST (Merkava less so then the others, but Gordeau and Waldstein are now struggling pretty hard, it seems), and now the (relatively) close range specialists Seth and Akatsuki are "S Tier" in Japan. Dunno how accurate that info is, but if true, it does sound like it's not meant to be a matter of long range > close range at neutral.

I never got into Tekken and I am done with fighting games for the most part, but that is kind of awesome.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
UNIST did nerf the long range game but that is likely going to change. I don't see the game keeping its appeal without getting back to what the game was made for.Squire Grooktook wrote:Actually just talked to someone a minute ago, and apparently the top trio got significantly nerfed in UNIEST (Merkava less so then the others, but Gordeau and Waldstein are now struggling pretty hard, it seems), and now the (relatively) close range specialists Seth and Akatsuki are "S Tier" in Japan. Again, I don't want or think that we'll see a return to UNIEL top 3 in terms of strength, but I do see the focus on long range coming back soon. Without it, there's little the game offers that you can't get elsewhere.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Can't disagree enough though. Regardless of what range your playing at, the games more methodical spacing feels quite a bit different to me (and very fun) compared to any of the guilty gear and marvel (the two games that have influenced "air dash" style fighting games the most, IMO, there's also Vampire Savior but very little out there truly plays like it IMO beyond general influence of the chaining system).quash wrote:Without it, there's little the game offers that you can't get elsewhere.
The prospect of actually walking up and baiting a sweep instead of air dashing in or calling an assist as cover feels practically alien. Not to say that games like Blazblue and Marvel don't have spacing, but the way it's actually applied feels a lot more "oldschool" to me then others.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I would argue that you don't get just how "old school" Guilty Gear's neutral actually is, but I digress...
The issue is that without taking advantage of all the space on screen, UNIB falls into a no-man's land of being the non-airdash airdasher or the airdash version of Street Fighter, depending on your perspective. What made the game unique and appealing was that it tried to utilize ranges for poking that no other game has, which is why it was able to get away with having less movement and defensive options. It worked well enough in spite of some characters being a bit too strong and there's definitely room to improve it. I am slightly disappointed in the route they went with UNIST but I'm confident that they're finding ways to make the optimal ranges from UNIEL work better.
Of course this isn't to say that the mid and close range game of UNIB is bad, but it's not what made the game appealing to me and many others. I could be wrong, but I kind of doubt they're going to change the focus of the game entirely.
