Sony Trinitron Tate Issue

I've been working on my first loop 1cc of Donpachi and have moved my Playstation from my dedicated Tated Commodore monitor to a 21 inch Trinitron which I use for my Yoko games in hope that it would improve my performance.
Well... it did! However, I am now faced with a deeply frustrating flaw. The screen cuts off on the left side (top of the TV) quite significantly, probably about an inch. What makes this especially frustrating is that I was having my best game, was just at the last boss, when a stray bullet from the invisible part of the screen took my last life. The commodore monitor does have a similar problem, but is nowhere near as prohibiting or distracting.

So my question is this: Is it at all possible to adjust horizontal (vertical in Tate, naturally) position manually on a Trinitron?

Yeah, you can adjust that in the service menu. I think earth's gravity throws off H centering after you rotate a CRT.

I can't seem to find the appropriate adjustments for it. The only options i'm given are the typical brightness and color settings, etc. The only thing I see that seems relevant is an option to compensate for "tilt," but nothing for the horizontal position.

Question is if you are in the service menu or in the "normal" menu availlable from your remote.

Also, you don't state the model of your tv. If it's an analog chassis there might be physical pots inside the tv for adjusting the geometry.

This is more likely the case. You'll probably need to open the TV up and look for pots to adjust.

I don't think I've ever found a trinitron where you couldn't adjust vert/hori size and position via the hidden service menu?

You may find part of the screen collapsing/compressing the picture in a way that can't be helped, due to a fault, but I'd be very surprised if you couldn't correct what seems to be a relatively common over scan issue via the service menu...

Entering the service menu is not the same for all sets, common techniques:

Manual buttons (typically early 90s models):
[PWR OFF] - [HOLD BOTH VOLUME BUTTONS] and [PWR ON]


Remote:

[PWR OFF] - [DISP], [5], [VOL+], [PWR ON]

-or-
[PWR OFF] - [DISP], [5], [PWR ON]

-or-
[PWR OFF] - [DISP], [5], [VOL+], [PICTURE], [PWR ON]



... Exact model may allow someone to more specifically advise.

Ignore anything anyone said about pots, your TV is way too new for that. I have an FV310 myself; as far as I know there's no way to access the service menu without a remote.
You should be able to use a universal one though, I use a universal Sony with mine (higher chance of success I know, but I don't see why it wouldn't work with others).

Yeah, you just need to make sure the remote has the buttons listed above plus the MUTING button, which is needed to write changes.

Be VERY careful though, you can permanently screw up your TV in the service menu. Look around on AVSForum.com and this site for posts on the service menu adjustments.

A remote and fiddling around in service menu will do the trick.
Good luck, can feel daunting at first, but you'll get the hang of it.
