Calibration settings for Sony BVM 20F1U

Post by mourasaint »

Hi guys,

I just got myself one of these CRT monitors on e-bay, as I heard they were the Holy Grail of retro-gaming displays. Unfortunately I'm near illiterate when it comes to almost everything tech-related, so it would be a really great help if one of you guys who also has the same display could share your calibration settings w/ me. Apologies for the n00bness  but i heard this was the best forum for everything display-related, especially re: gaming.

At the moment I only have a Wii plugged into it via component (looks far from extraordinary, frankly), but am waiting on a Scart to RGB connection to arrive on the mail for my Genesis.

Thank you in advance.

Some additional info...

My format is set to "Component...", then "YUV Betacam". It's the one that's given me the best image out of all the other Component formats.
Here's a pic of what the monitor does when I switch the sync to EXT (which everyone keeps telling me to do): http://imgur.com/Ai2SMnc

Component (YUV) uses internal sync, ext is for RGB.

See if you can track down a Sony BKM-14L probe. It plugs into the BVM and automatically calibrates the colour to the selected standard.
Also try a test suite to check the geometry of the screen.
There are threads around the forum with helpful info.

Test suite sounds a bit too complicated, but I'll try tracking down that device you mentioned.

Even my SCART to RGB connection, which I just received today, looks distinctly unimpressive. Either a.) my set is subpar, b.) it requires a lot more tinkering with than I'd originally assumed, or c.) I let my expectation go overboard after so much hype re: its image quality.

Truth is though, I don't think it looks any better than my old school (EURO SCART) connections from back in the day. In fact, to my eyes, it looks worse.

What are these Terminator things I keep hearing about, and would they help in terms of improving the image quality?

Thanks.

You need to use BNC terminators on the connections next to where the cable is plugged in. That kind of screen can send the picture out to another screen so you need to block that signal.

Using a test disc is going to be way easier than hunting down some obscure probe, IMO.

Get a simple test disc like the Avia video esentials, spears & munsil, or something similar, and hook it up via a cheap DVD player (or game console) via component.

That sounds way too complicated for my puny brain. I think I'll need a professional to check it out.

Is there anyone in the L.A. area that would be interested in taking a look? I'll pay good money.
